Sail Life - Cobra 4R steering pedestal, refurbishing part 1 of 2

  • I open up my Cobra 4R steering pedestal to inspect it. Fortunately, it turns out that I only need to replace a single bearing and the plastic break cover. I dropped off the pedestal at a paint shop. Unfortunately, I didn't get it back before leaving to spend Christmas in LA so that will have to wait until part 2 :)

    I know I'm late to the party but, the engine exhaust and the steering column could have used some metal braising. I can't actually braise myself, but I've seen calls for it in the past. Fascinating videos, thanks.

    Hi Mads, I have a similar Whitlock unit. Just found out that Defender carries replacement parts. The plastic brake cup on mine was also cracked, and I got away with gluing it (Crazy Glue), sanding and repainting. But the other day I saw Defender had the part for less in US dollars than Cliff sells for in British Pounds....FWIW

    Hi Mads, I think you might want to consider a few additions items for your pedestal: a cup holder or two, a USB port, a bracket (for the chart plotter/GPS) that can tilt as well as swivel. I've heard folks who thought it wasn't needed/necessary, later realize it is a really nice feature to have. If the screen is titled up and you are sitting down, you can't see the screen and if you're sitting to port or starboard, again unless the screen can swivel toward you, you can't see the screen. Hope this helps. Thanks for sharing, have a blessed Christmas. 👍👍👍😊⛵⛵⛵⛵😊🎄🎁🎄🎁🎄

    MAds if your going to put some small lights in the top plate shining down to the cockpit sole than a idea is get small "Sail Life" covers so when it is shining down it displays the sail life logo on the sole of the cockpit. Also with the taller height of the entire thing get a large plate to fit under the bottom side of the cockpit sole to strengthen the floor so if you fall against the higher pedestal, even with a heavy display up that high, it will be safe.

  • @alansailing1387

    When you get the replacement bearing, use a sharp object to pop put the rubber seal out of one side, pack the bearing with grease and re-install the seal. You would not normally do this on a bearing that is running fast but it will help protect the bearing long term from any moisture that may get inside the pedestal.

  • @svbarryduckworth628
    @svbarryduckworth628 5 років тому +5

    That pedistal looks great inside. I'd order extra bearings right now for both the top and bottom of shaft while you are at it. Bearings usually have numbers right on them, plus you can just measure them to compare. Get the versions with the rubber guards on both sides to keep the grease from getting contaminated inside if you can get them like that.
    As far as the control lever I would try and lower the controller a little bit if you can, because there are often steel parts inside them that are somewhat magnetic, and the control cables themselves usually have steel magnetic parts in them too. Keeping them lower will help keep your compass as accurate as possible.
    Definitely replace the cables when you have this all apart. They are not very expensive at all, as strange as that sounds. New cables makes for silky smooth operation of the throttle and the reverse gear.

      Sealed bearings, not just shielded.

    • @svbarryduckworth628
      @svbarryduckworth628 5 років тому +1

      @@gregoryyount6907 "sealed" bearings really are not sealed in the traditional sense. Bearings are used on motors and the "sealed" rating only applies to being sealed against the cooling air being pulled through the motor by the impeller fan at the front of the open motor casing.
      The air pulled through the motor contains dust that will contaminate the grease if it is being pulled through the bearings themselves too.
      Thus "sealed" -but these "seals" don't stop moisture hardly at all and it is foolhearty to think they will.

    So, if you are going to put a chart plotter on the pedestal I would like to make a suggestion. You may want to have a way to cut sun glare if your bimini is off or down. Think about a tinted plexiglass shied that you could flip over or swing onto it. In the sun you really won't be able to read it without something.

    I think the only thing I would worry about is the quality/alloying in the stainless steel used on the pedestal. It's not always a given that what you're told you're getting is what you actually get. Some stainless does great in seawater conditions, some others do more so-so. Also, see if you can somehow integrate a table hinge/lock and drink holders into the pedestal if you plan on putting a table there anyway. Other than that it looks good.

    I find that the engine control on most sailboat are often placed at an oddly place. you have to reach down over the steering wheel. It can work if you have long arms. But for a woman with shorter arms, not always that handy. Why not move it a little bit up, at the height of the compass. Maybe make is symmetric with similar box at other side. ! Just my thought!

    whilst morse controls can be really expensive and spending 300 dollars in one of them is really quite easy, it does pay off in the long run, and you will never change it during your ownership. enjoyed your design for the steering station, you might want to incorporate some clipping points for the helmsman (if you hadnt already). keep up the nice work!!

    Great video! 1) Think hard about all the stuff you are adding around your compass, so you won’t go through heck when you have to adjust (swing) the compass after installation. 2) Think hard about the height of the chart plotter in relation to both sitting and standing at the helm.

    Hi Mads! I have the same setup on my steering pedastal, with the navigation screen tilting up. I don´t like it, i can only see the screen well when i stand behind the wheel. But on passage it´s mostly sitting down so then it´s really difficult to see anything on the screen. Pretty annoying, and something i really wish was designed differently.

    • @ylemoine1
      @ylemoine1 5 років тому +9

      Martin Bruisten I agree, this isn’t the ideal arrangement. Mads, I suggest you terminate the pedestal with a grab rail and mount the chart plotter to an enclosure that can rotate to port or starboard. That will make sailing the most comfortable and allow you to keep an eye on things without having to jump up behind the wheel. In your rendering if you terminate it with about a 30 cm strait loop and then mount your chart plotter on a single rotating mount on the top of the loop you can swing it though about 235 deg, port and starboard, or even better 360 deg so you can see it from the companionway. It would be better if you could mount it about waist height, but it doesn’t look like an option for your cockpit. Good luck with the design. Stainless will look amazing! Fair winds and hope LA is treating you and Eva well.

    • @svbarryduckworth628
      @svbarryduckworth628 5 років тому +2

      Many modern chartplotters are networkable so that multiple plotters can work together. The B&G Zeus plotters do this (but not the Vulcan) so you can have one at the pedistal, one at the front of the cockpit, and one down at the nav station. Each one can have the same or different screens up and multiple crewmembers can be doing work on each of them at the same time. Helmsman can be reading the chart, while someone is adding new waypoints, checking gribs, looking at sonar charts, reading AIS info, all without bothering the other station.
      The actual plotter at the helm can be a smaller 7" or even 5" one that is cheaper and not so intrusive.

      @Frostbbitten 5 років тому +3

      Agree with all commenters here. The fixed pod looks clean but is not as practical. Yes depending on your system, you could also duplicate the display on an ipad or something but why? It's right there, out of the way, weather proof, won't get sat on or launched across the cockpit, it just needs to be able to rotate and will always be available at a glance. Someone else mentioned Ruby Rose, here is the link to his comments regarding the rotating Nav Pod... ua-cam.com/video/INT-7T_S6WA/v-deo.html granted, they have dual helm which makes it almost essential but I still think making it view-able from the cockpit seating is a great feature. You could make a second plate cross above the compass where you could mount the locking rotatable pedestal for the nav pod and perhaps bend the tubing foward, across and back again to go around that plate so you still have a convenient grab handle. Just throwing it out there.

    • @acmeopinionfactory8018
      @acmeopinionfactory8018 5 років тому

      Martin Bruistein How much time do you spend looking at your chartplotter 'on passage'?
      If I'm doing any sort of critical piloting, I'm standing, as it gives me a much better view of my surroundings, (markers, rocks, sand banks, coral heads, other vessels), not to say that swiveling isn't a good idea, but certainly not the panacea that everyone is making it out to be.

    Can't wait to see the new stainless steel version. I'm sure that will look awesome. I also saw read your comments about learning to weld and think that is a fantastic idea. I picked up welding just for fun a few years ago and find it very rewarding. My advice is to see if you can befriend someone who has experience and get them to show you a few things. There are certainly technical aspects of welding (rod types, current settings, etc.) but to get good looking welds you need to develop a feel for it. An experienced welder or welding class can help you develop those skills.

    Going by the sound, there's need for lubrication, other than that, the top gears look in good condition, for kicks and giggles, if you actually want to know how good an engagement your gears get, once you're done cleaning, paint the ring gear with some kind of meaty removable paint, then assemble the assembly, snug, and move it around a bunch, take it apart, and see how much of the paint is worn off.
    Also, make sure that the compass is ok with that much ferrous metal around it!!!

    Is there the part 2 follow up to this video anywhere? Have the same pedestal and there’s a bit of play in it. I doubt it’ll need to come apart but thought I’d watch your next video before tackling it 😬😬😬

    Make sure the races are nitrogen steel(stainless). The ceramic balls will wear regular stainless races quickly.

    You need a new T-shirt and sticker with WTF on it! Definitely need a beer can holder incorporated into the engine control housing!

    Merry Christmas Mads and Ava from PEI Canada. I hope it was enjoyable to use the hammer smash and grinder to disassemble those old engine controls lol. Cheers, Bryan

    That logo looks like the Whitlock logo. They made a Cobra 4 pedestal amongst others. So my guess would be that the motor control housing was a stock part from Whitlock.
    I looked the vid again and sure enough the logo is on your Whitlock diagram. Thinking about LA are we?

      You are correct. You could by that pedestal with that control housing from Whitlock.
      I have one.

    Making gear controll in stainless, will ruin your pedestall. We call it galvanic corrosion. All alu. will corrode very fast.

    Make the top plate out of alu not stainless . Less deviation on the compass

      Stainless steel is non magnetic (the common, austenitic grades), so it shouldn't pose a problem.

      Wilf Williams Ever try sticking a magnet to a piece of stainless?
      Ever seen a stainless compass shroud/sun cover?

      @Dom Reale I was, in my naiveté, hoping for for a UA-cam conversation about the type of stainless found aboard a blue water yacht, not the myriad of other 'stainless' found in kitchens, operating theatres, tool making shops, or Soviet era dental appliances.

    • @LeftFlamingo
      @LeftFlamingo 5 років тому

      @Dom Reale no, 304 isn't. It too is an austenitic stainless steel, the only key difference is molybdenum. Then again, I wouldn't use 304 on exterior parts on a blue water boat. 316L would be the way to go, since these parts will be welded up.

      316 is not magnetic (unless recently marketed chinesium alloy derivates probably ...) while it is way too shiny as a compass base and should stay unpainted, what makes it an absolute non-touch item in tropical or Med sun, not the best choice at this place of the boat in my opinion.

    As somebody else mentioned...USB Port (at least 2), 12VDC Cigarette Lighter Adapter (there are still uses for them)...and maybe cup/wine glass holders (need 2...one for you, one for Ava).

    Consider OpenCpn software for Navigation. It is open source. Free for Windows and I think Ipad. There is an Android version as well for about $10.
    Consider chart plotter mounts that allow you to swing and tilt them.

    A bit of history of the 'pedestal guard'. Originally fitted to keep the mainsheet from looping around the compass and pulling it off, but nobody tells sailors that so they look at it, and seeing that it's usually the same sort of tube as the bow and stern rails, assume that it's a strong thing. If they could see what was holding it to the cockpit floor they'd thing twice.
    At least one person has died because they attached a harness tether to one and were washed away. (Fastnet race 1979).
    Might be your chance to educate your viewers on not using them as attachment points for tethers. OK as a handhold, not much more than that.
