  • Larry DeSantis says he believes he was one of the last people to drive off the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore before the catastrophic collapse. In an interview with CNN, he recalled his drive across, “focusing on the guys on the bridge” and trying to drive carefully around them. #CNN #News

I thank the men for their service. Finally, I am an advocate for a suspension bridge but that decision obviously is not up to me. My broker (and the man upstairs) must have been looking out for me because he called and said that the shipper had the load ready (which was at 12 noon, instead of 2pm). I am so glad I decided to pick up early because if I had waited until 2pm, ETA would have put me on that bridge sometime around when the accident happened. If you look closely you see the whole bridge did not collapse. It was the middle section that did. On either end you can see cars. Imagine the story they have to tell. The time it must have taken for all of them to back up to get off the bridge with the thought in mind that it too could collapse at any moment.
The responsibility that caused all of this to happen is just now coming to light. It goes to the change in laws for the Panama Canal. Until fairly recently those huge container ships were not allowed to pass through the canal. After they were , all the ports were forced to contend with them. It's all about the money. The canal changed its laws because bigger ships brought more money.
Our ports saw that opportunity as well although they didn't have much choice when the container ships started to show up.
Nobody thought a once in a lifetime occurrence tragedy could happen on their bridge at that time. Our world works on that assumption, unfortunately.

When a new bridge is constructed surround each pier between which ships pass with what is tantamount to an oval-shaped island of rock and soil about 200 feet long in the direction of travel and 100 feet wide. A coffer dam on the perimeter eases placement and facilitates consolidation of material. A few piles driven into the seabed extending into each mass provides even greater stability. Material for each island dredged from the seabed benefits the channel. Relative to the cost of the bridge this is an inexpensive and effective solution that will prevent piers from being dislodged when bumped by the largest of container ships.
The fastest and cheapest way of repairing this bridge is to manufacture and replace the collapsed trusses. All of the plans are available. The procedure is known. Of course, what results is new, old stock, a fifty year old bridge verging on obsolesce with respect to container ships ability to navigate beneath it.

Late Sunday night the weekend before the “world series” Loma Prieta earthquake, I drove a visiting Czech seismologist back to Berkeley after giving him a tour of the San Andreas fault at Pt. Reyes. As we drove on the Cypress structure at the Eastern end of the Bay bridge, I told him how it was now understood that it had a design flaw and the upper deck would pancake down onto the lower roadway crushing all the cars there in a major earthquake. It was high priority for retrofitting. “We better hope there is no major earthquake right now!”
The following Tuesday afternoon it happened.

As this driver attests, it's a lingering trauma and any people like him, 1st responders, crews, or ship crews need TLC. Interview reminds me of 1 with a San Francisco City bus driver in 5pm commuter traffic fully packed passenger load, on Cypress Fwy crossing the SF Bay. Game 3, World Series, between SF Giants & Oakland A's that year (1989)--when Loma Prieta Earthquake struck at 5:15p. On city bus suspended in air, they didn't know---driver saw in her driver mirrors---but, she couldn't compute what she was seeing, only it didn't make sense & she knew to just floor it as best she could. As she drove, realizing less traffic behind her--some passengers in rear started yelling, the road was physically disappearing as their rear wheels passed over. She got them across, but it was 100% miracle keeping her professional calm. I sometimes think about her. I was a city bus driver at the time, different city, full Respect. These crews/workers/staff now are all doing hazardous, stressful work. Respect.

DeSantis says he believes he was one of the last people to get off the bridge before the deadly collision. In an interview with CNN, he recalled his drive across, “focusing on the guys on the bridge” and trying to drive carefully around them, DeSantis told CNN.
Traffic camera video from the final five minutes before the collision shows a vehicle that could match DeSantis’ vehicle and timing with what appears to be a trailer-less truck following, though the video is not entirely clear.
Only six more cars went through that lane before the 984-foot container ship struck one of the bridge’s pillars at 1:29 a.m.
The collapse sent vehicles and people into the frigid Patapsco River. Six workers who were repairing potholes on the bridge were reported missing in the aftermath; two of their bodies have since been recovered. The other four are presumed dead.
As debris removal began over the weekend, officials said they were preparing to open a temporary alternate channel that will allow commercially essential vessels to reach the port.
