I loooove my blue transparent Custom 74. My sweet friend (and fellow fountaineer) surprised me with one for my 50th birthday, and I literally cheered when you did the great reveal!

I COMPLETELY get your love for Pilot pens!
Objectively, my two favourite pens are my MB 146 Around the World In Eighty Days (F) and my MB 146 Calligraphy Flex.
However, the pen that I’ve purchase the most frequently, including a new one a couple of days ago, is the Pilot CH92. The first one was transparent blue with an FM nib. I liked it so much for writing with that I purchased a transparent demonstrator with a M nib for drawing with. Even though I can reverse write with it to get a thinner line, the other day I purchased a transparent demonstrator with a F nib as I’ve been thinking about it for quite a while and they’re getting impossible to find.
I use Platinum Carbon Black ink for drawing since it’s waterproof and won’t mess up my watercolours when I paint. I love having dedicated pen(s) for drawing with and being able to know exactly how much ink is in it, so I can refill it before I head out, if need be.

Like you, I find the ink capacity of piston fillers to be a bit much. My favorite pen is my Pilot Custom 743 with a nib and the CON-70 converter. A close second is my Pilot Custom 74 with a nib. I think the nibs do feel different to write with in a way that's hard for me to explain, but they're dreamy smooth and absolutely my favorites. Thanks for the video!

Same. When I cut my pen collection down to a more manageable number, the 743 stuck around but the 823 didn't. I like being able to tear down a pen all the way to clean it. As I got older, I stopped being snooty about cartridge converters as well.

Had a 74 and loved it. Got an 823 and started to love it less. The 823 was just more of everything I loved about the 74 and the larger nib and vac fill just made it feel more like my go to every time. As for having a favorite, the 823 is hard to beat as far as a consistent premium writing experience. The only other pen I grab as much is the Sailor 1911L when I want a similar premium experience but need that extra bit of tactile tooth on the page.

I have one with an EF nib. I gotta say, it's probably as close to a perfect pen for me. Round finials, twist cap, gold Japanese EF nib, C/C, silver trim, comfortably full size. It's got it all for me.

No guarantee, but the irritating problem of stuck ink bottle tops can sometimes be solved by running the top of the bottle under warm water. heat expands and disrupts the seal, and water can dissolve a bit of the ossified ink, also breaking the seal. Another stunt is to let it sit in the freezer for a short while, not long enough to freeze and ruin the ink, and then tap the lid on a hard surface. Then try the hot shower. Most of the stuck tops can be prevented in the future if you wipe off the edge and threads of the bottle while you have your rag out, and run a bit of lube on the cap threads. Best wishes.

My Custom Heritage 92 is still one of my favorite users despite adding dozens of pens since I got that one. It's got the same size nib as the 74 but in a flat-topped piston fill body. I have the nib instead of the . It actually strikes a nice balance between the wetness/smoothness of the and the office utility of the . Still smooth/wet like the medium but tame enough to use on cheap copy paper in an office environment.
I have always had Tsuki-yo in mine and I probably always will. I recently picked up a bottle of Rikka and I thought there was a chance that it would dethrone Tsuki-yo as my all time favorite ink. It's close. Rikka kind of does to blue what Tsuki-yo does to blue/black. It adds some hints of teal and is a bit of a chameleon, changing quite a bit based on paper/nib size/lighting/etc. Tsuki-yo still takes the cake for me, though. It fits perfectly at the intersection of office usability and pen nerd connoisseurship.
Good video that reminds me that I should probably add one of the Custom 74's since they come in a wider range of colors than the 92 and are a bit easier to clean.

The Custom 74 with a medium nib is an awesome pen; in fact, it was the first modern gold nib pen that I purchased. As an alternative to the Custom 823, I purchased the Custom 743 (cartridge/converter) pen with a soft fine-medium nib.

Lovely coincidence - my latest pen is a Pilot Custom 74 with the 'SM' - soft medium nib. It works beautifully with Noodler's Ink 54th Massachsetts (blue-black bullet-proof ink). For all the reasons you mention, it is beautiful. I used it to sign my passport. It is by far my favourite pen, too. The nib floats with no pressure at all, and still delivers shading.

So interesting how we switch back and forth as far as favourites are concerned. I'm in another Aurora phase; as a result I've just invested in another (Asia LE in fine). Optimas were your top pens a few years ago and now you're in a Pilot phase, a make I've never got on with (me not them being the problem). A few months ago I fell in love with, again, my little brass Kaweco Sport, and before that, a Pro Gear. Will you stay with that 74, or what will be the next top pen? And I'm wondering where I'll go next... Wherever, it's all a lovely adventure😊😊...

  • @timothyfles-v8g
    @timothyfles-v8g 9 днів тому +2

The shading occurs cause it's a flexible nib, and you have the tendency to press harder on a downstroke then on an upstroke..every flexible (and real flex nibs) will give you this if that is your handwriting (heavy hand)..

  • @wkasimer

I resisted Benu for a long time - too much bling - but when I found that same pen on eBay, I took the plunge, and have since bought a couple of other Benus. Most of them are still too much bling for my taste, but they do write beautifully.
I have a Pilot 912 with a soft F nib, and a 743 with a soft FM nib, and those are two of my absolutely most reliable pens - always inked. I'll probably skip the 823 - I already have enough vac fillers and eyedroppers - and skip to the 845 when the time comes.

I agree with another viewer that the Pilot 743 would be one of my top pens.ine has a SF nib that is phenomenal. But I think my best pen would have to be the Platinum President with the Medium nib. It is about the size of a Montblanc 146. The feel in the hand is wonderful and the nib glides across the page with just a hint of feedback. If there was any criticism it would have to be the small ink capacity, just a bit over ,5 ml in the converter. I haven't checked the capacity of the cartridge. I would consider barrel filling the pen but I think the barrel is not water right. Why they discontinued this model is beyond me. It was originally made for President Clinton and then released to the public. In no uncertain terms, find one and enjoy the experience.

Honestly I was a bit heartbroken when it wasn’t the 823! But it was a PILOT! ❤. I figured the 74 may be it because you have talked about it alot. Have you tried the Custom 743? Basically it’s the cartridge/converter version of the 823. I absolutely love mine! The 743 is hands down my #1. The 823 is #1.1b. 😂. I have flirted with the idea of the 74. With every review, you have me inching closer to it. Also, give Pen Sachi (Japanese retailer) a look. They have a wide variety of colors/nibs that you don’t get in the US or North America. Also - they have a dark green version of the 823 if anyone is interested! It’s just beautiful! If you play your cards right, you can get free shipping from Japan! 😮. Thanks again! Great video! 🇺🇸
