Veeran Movie Synospsis: A young man, who has had a troubled childhood after getting hit by lightning, comes back to his village to fight evil elements and provide hope through indigenous deities.
Veeran Movie Review: Superhero films are a rarity in the South, because our heroes are already larger than life. However, films like Minnal Murali attempted to create grounded characters with extraordinary abilities. Veeran follows suit by introducing a protagonist who can generate electric arcs and manipulate brain impulses using electromagnetic waves. While these powers may not be entirely original, given that we have seen similar elements in Minnal Murali earlier, this film incorporates a regional touch by incorporating an involving indigenous deities.
Kumara (Hiphop Adhi), hailing from Veeranur village, is struck by lightning during his childhood, leaving his life hanging by a thread. In order to receive better treatment, his father sends him to Singapore. After nearly 16 years, Kumara returns to his hometown, but he is no longer the same person. Equipped with superhuman abilities, he embarks on a mission to protect his village from a technological threat that might destroy innocent lives.
A hazardous underground laser cable spanning 30 kilometres, affecting numerous villages, remains incomplete due to lack of support from the Veeranur villagers. The film revolves around Kumara's efforts to halt the corporation behind this project and save his people.
ARK Saravanan's Veeran begins on a strong note, immersing us in the world of a superhero fantasy. Unlike other films where the hero takes time to discover their powers, Veeran already knows his purpose thanks to a haunting dream, returning to his roots with a mission in mind. The build-up of conflicts is well-executed, although the limitations of Veeran's abilities may not be entirely convincing. His ability to control minds through waves appears rather convenient. However, certain sequences and characters capture our attention. The filmmaker also offers commentary on superstition and science and takes a rational approach.
The climax could have been more realistic, aligning with the concept that individuals are the true heroes, given the potential of the plot. The film fares well when it comes to its making. The portions involving Munishkanth, Kaali Venkat, and a few other characters provide comic relief. A stronger emphasis on Veeran's ability to instill hope by resurrecting everyone would have made a significant impact.
Adhi delivers a convincing performance as the superhero, creating a relatable character while Athira Raj portrays his love interest competently. However, Vinay's role as the main antagonist could have been more powerful. The background score, by Hiphop Tamizha, enhances several scenes.
Overall, Veeran possesses enough strength to keep us engaged throughout the film.
