No, it is because the 3 properties which Sir mentioned suffices to prove d(x,y) >= 0. It is because:
d(x,y) + d(y,x) > = d(x,x) (Using property 3)
Now since d(x,x) = 0 (Property 1) and d(y,x) = d(x,y) we have
2d(x,y) >= 0 which implies d(x,y) >= 0.
Hence for showing that d is metric, it suffices to show that d satisfies the above 3 properties.
