I bought mine (a cutout, not a first pressing) from Woolworth's for $1 when I was a kid. They had it in the window with the $1 price tag to lure in shoppers, but didn't actually have any in stock. I demanded they sell me the display copy, and they did!

Why would a popular Beatles album ever end up as a cutout? Sounds like some kind of shenanigans.

@@robgronotte1 Believe it or not, Let It Be had cutout copies sold in the States in the 70s before going out of print for almost a decade.

That's crazy, was it really considered to be that bad or what? I heard the singles from it all the time on the radio when I was growing up in the late 70s and early 80s. Definitely had no trouble finding a new copy when I bought mine in the mid 80s.

After six years of listening to my big sister's Beatles records (she had attended both Shea Stadium concerts), when she left home for college the "Let it Be" album was the first record I ever bought. At a grocery store, of all places. I thought the "Phil + Ronnie" inner-groove inscription was neat, but at that age I had no idea who Ronnie was.

Thanks Andrew. Someone mentioned once on a music forum that the UK box set was an overstock item at Tower Records in Hollywood in 1972 and they were offering sealed copies at two dollars and 50 cents each! I almost hope that wasn't true 'cause I sure missed the boat on that one.

      hello from New Zealand,
in 1973 leftover boxes of the book were shipped to NZ at no cost apart from freight costs to an auckland record shop. they were sold on to the public for 20 cents each. i know because i went to see a chuck berry show and during the trip i bought several copies for myself and schoolmates.
yes its true they did fall apart very quickly and ..yes its true, he played only 45 minutes .
i loved him and was not disappointed

Hi, Andrew! Greetings from Guatemala. It was a nice surprise to see one of our records in your video. I love The Beatles and I love your videos because, with them, I'm learning so much about Los Beatles and their music. DIDECA was the manufacturer here in Guatemala. Phew ! …..glad you mentioned that the green apple sleeve is as valid and authentic as the red apple version on the U.K. version boxset
So many people believe that is only the red apple that’s “original” to the boxset.
Your last video that mentioned the boxset overlooked mentioning the green apple variant and nearly caused an international incident between myself and a septic.
In the end we had to call in Henry Kissinger to mediate.

    • @michaelnyny

    • @davidheafield1436
      @davidheafield1436 2 роки тому +1

@@michaelnyny …..what we are talking about here isn’t the colour of the label but the colour of the apple on the back of our U.K. (non-gatefold) sleeve.
Many people seem to believe that it was only ever released with a red apple on the back sleeve and that if it’s a green apple then it must have been switched at some point.
This is nonsense of course , they had both , either red or green are equally valid.

Nice video, the picture of the French copy/pressing that apprears at 3:20 is an early 70's reissue because of the SACEM logo (a BIEM mark on the label would mean that the record was pressed before 1971 whereas the 'new' SACEM logo would state that the LP was pressed in the year 1971 or after this date).

Another wonderful video! I actually really liked this format (where you go over each country like a list), and it was really cool that you went over more obscure countries! Here, in Norway, we actually made the disc here at home. Covers were imported from the uk, as usual. But, I think we also had the box set in stores here at home! It sold poorly (I believe), so a lot of them were shipped to other countries (I believe a lot was shipped to Hungary, though I could be completely wrong on that one…).
Looking forward to the other let it be videos, and the video on Beatles oldies but goldies!

It's worth pointing out that in the US, "Let It Be" was out of print for most of the 1970's, owing to conflicts between ABKCO and Apple.
In November 1976, almost 500,000 overstocked copies were purchased by a cutout record distributor in New Jersey, and after obtaining permission from all four Beatles to sell the albums, these "new old stock" copies were then distributed across the country.
It was finally properly reissued by Capitol in 1979, with a custom innersleeve reproducing the photos from the original gatefold.

    • @chrisorsten

I thought the issue of it being out of print in the US was for the same reason "A Hard Days Night" and "Help!" were for a portion of the 70s - they were all released by United Artisits Records as a deal with the movie distribution, and there was a fight between them and EMI/Capitol until EMI bought UA Records.

Just a tidbit about Philippine Beatles vinyl that I want to share: apparently, some of the early solo albums & singles were for some reason also credited to the Beatles, sometimes with the actual Beatle presented as a featuring artist (as in "Imagine - The Beatles featuring John Lennon"), which I always found amusing lol

Thanks Andrew, Looking forward to your next video. Regarding the box set. It is often said that the Get Back book was not sold separately. However in Australia I picked up a copy for $1 from our local Myer department store where remaindered copies were sold in I think December 1970. I bought the Australian LP for $5.75 after convincing my brother and sister to contribute $1 each and I think the box set was about $10 - $12. I looked at the box set and the old gentleman who ran the Rosebud (Victoria)record shop held on to it very tightly as he showed me but as I have stated I didn't have the cash as a 13 yr old to buy it. I also have a bootleg US copy of the gatefold Let It Be - It has wider white margins around the photos than the genuine copy.

Andrew, thank you for another informative video. Interesting Mexico and the US are the only albums (that I noticed) listing “I Dig a Pony” as the title of the song instead of “Dig a Pony”.
Back in the early 80s (before CD) I recorded all of the Beatles songs in alphabetical order on cassette tapes from my US albums. It took quite some time.😃 I later burned all their songs from CD in alphabetical order (a lot easier this time). This time, however, I listed “Dig a Pony” in the “D” section instead of the “I” section.👍

The US version of LIB was NOT distributed by Capitol, it was distributed by United Artists Records. That is why is has the distinct catalog number of AR 34001. Capitol did not acquire the rights to this album until 1978 when it was reissued on the purple Capitol label. Also as part of the United Artists Records acquisition by Capitol was A Hard Day's Night.

But then, the Let It Be/ Get Back album had the longest and most complicated history of any album, ever. At one point, the whole project was cancelled, and Abbey Road recorded, so the band could end on a "good note" (pun Intended) So many different editions, both bootleg and legit. Countless editions!

In 1 or 2 countries Beatles 45s were issued on....His Master's Voice!!! Who knows what else is out there; we're all so used to the labels/companies from our own countries, to me getting into collecting as a kid/tween it was "what the heck is Parlophone??" then of course we learned more...Absolutely nuts, might be an interesting dive into the pre-globalization regionality of the record biz, viz Beatles....Great job as always on this!

Hi Andrew. Thanks so much for featuring the Philippine pressing. Though I have to point out something. But first, no doubt Let It Be was also released here in 1970. But all records in our country in any size (7", 12") were only stamped with the PARI logo by at the earliest 1977, during the time Saturday Night Fever was a sensation. I am not very sure though if Dyna pressed Beatles records that year (on the side, DYNA at the time is our local distributor for EMI, PolyGram and they also have WEA Philippines which is distributing Warner/Elektra/Atlantic and all its subsidiaries). But I am pretty sure when the first boxed set - the Blue one - was released here in our country in 1979, I would like to believe they also pressed copies separately. So I am pretty confident the copy you have is at the very earliest 1979.

The initial US version was not pressed by Capitol, but by United Artists. For a while in the 70's it was a frequently counterfeited album after the original had gone out of print. It never appeared on any Capitol-related release until EMI swallowed up the U.A. family of labels, and only then did a Capitol issue happen (purple label, non gatefold sleeve)

Hi Andrew, interesting stuff! So my set (which I thought was a Frankenstein set) consists of a UK red apple cover (with small P on record label) and a UK book, but a box that says made in Germany on the back. It sounds like this could actually be a Swedish copy! Cheers

Great stuff! FYI, the original US release of 'Let It Be' was not released by Capitol but by United Artist records as part of the deal with UA releasing the film. It was deleted after a few years, along with 'A Hard Day's Night' soundtrack, and both were not available for a long time. Counterfeit copies were made and sold in heavy numbers. Capitol then re-issued both albums on the Capitol label in 1980.

Hi Andrew, thank you again for this very great and informative video.
Will you also show the original german issue and record of the Box-Set in future videos as well?
If you do, please make sure you'll show the right backside of the red Apple 1C 062 - 04 433 Y catalogue numbered, fully laminated cover that had the printing credit "Printed and made in Germany by Heinrich Nicolaus GmbH" on the rear, as well as the same credit printed on original german made, fully laminated german outer covers, in the same space as "Printed and made in Great Britain by Garrod & Lofthouse Limited (Patents Pending), substituting the british text in its original place. In your video you show the backside of the later german album only version, made from 1977 onwards and with catalogue number 1C 072 -04 433. These album covers were not laminated at all and had the printing credit on the rear changed to "All rights reserved. Printed in Germany by4P NICOLAUS GmbH, Köln" instead. Also first german editions of the album were distibuted with rough black paper inner sleeves, like almost all early german LP releases from Apple up and until 1971. These first album pressings also had a dark green looking apple on the a-side and a kind of "greyish" looking apple on their b-side, displaying a clearly visible core area like its british cousin. Another interesting fact: In Germany, the "LET IT BE" album was still listed in the complete EMI-ELECTROLA LP-catalogue as "1 LP mit Tasche und Buch" ("1 LP with bag and book") by early 1973! So it looks like, the german Box-Set was still available in Germany by then.
Do you know anything about the time of availability of the box from other countrys?
One last thing: Parts of the german Box-Set (knowingly, the german printed Heinrich Nicolaus GmbH outer covers and inner trays) were used together with french pressed LP's from PATHÉ - MARCONI FRANCE and "GET BACK" books from the U.K. for the french edition of the box-set.
Also in France, complete original U.K. box sets were imported and sold over there at the time as well.

Small correction - Let It Be was never released in Canada as a gatefold. We did have US imports come in with a gatefold and red apple label, but these were not Canadian manufactured. Also, the paste over credits in the book were also printed on the page in many copies. In other copies the inside of the cover was also black instead of the usual white. It should also be noted that the Russian version had a slightly different track listing, with "Maggie Mae" appearing as the first track on side two.

Hi Andrew, the first time I heard the album was a copy belonging to the older brother of a school chum. It was the Canadian box set. By the time I could afford a copy, the only thing available new was the non-gatefold Capitol pressing of the late '70s. Not very good. Later I picked up a clean used red Apple gatefold, a U.S. pressing. Better, mostly I think because the vinyl in the early 70s was higher quality.
Just ordered the Super Deluxe Vinyl edition, mostly for the extra bits and bobs, out-takes and (finally!) the fabled Glyn Johns mix on its own LP.
It will be interesting to compare the Giles Martin, Glyn Johns and (via my 1972 gatefold) Phil Spector mixes, along with the 2003 "Let It Be ... NAKED" mixes by Paul Hicks and Allan Rouse. Whew! That's a lotta Let It Be. I'm sure once I'm done, I won't need to listen to the album again for at least a couple of months.😃

Interesting! One thing worth noting on the Mexican issue is that the cover features paintings of the band, not the usual photographs, and there's at least one typo- on the label it names a track as "I've got a feelig".
