Lived in Wirral all my life and never knew all the train tunnels were here, wanna go explore it myself, tried getting into bidston hill tunnels earlier this year but all entrances too bricked up 😒
I've lived in Birkenhead for 30 years and always wondered what it looked like in the old tunnels, what amazing architecture! This video was a pleasure to watch!
My first proper job was in the old Police station on the docks next to where the first of the 4 bridges is. It’s been demolished but my view out looked over the level crossing and signal box at the far end where you said it was 8 o’clock. It was a bout another 1/4 mile and the line used to come out near where Birkenhead College is now. I used to watch the class 47 diesels coming and going from the docks by Corporation street which used to be a real prozzie hang out.lol and all the pubs used to have strippers performing at lunchtimes and evenings hahah.. The docks line closed in the early 80s but the other lines to Woodside closed in 1967
My mum used to say that she used to get the train from a station the other side of Woodside, just further down by the bus station part when she was young. Really interesting video and entertaining to watch. Cheers 👍
Ohh wow Hannah thats interesting,so you can imagine people getting of train at woodside after a family holiday at seaside, then go to this station like your mum to get home around liverpool.shame its all gone now.Thankyou Hannah for your kind words.👌Love ot when i get nice historic comments so good.
Hi Dave, good and interesting video you wouldn't believe that you were at a train station with all thrat undergrowth, don't know much about the other side of the Mersey but thanks for sharing, enjoying your video's and thanks again for the history you have provided you certainly have done your research which is always appreciated when watching your video keep up your great exploring and as always looking forward to your next explorer cheers
Thanks Martin, yes and we have monks tunnel to do to soon.Theres so much hidden away on that side just waiting to be found.we going to spend more time over there soon.and Thanks again Martin for your kind words,,,,,,ONWARDS.
Really great video. One thing I caught, at 23 min 52 secs, it says coronation , not corporations. King Edward VII’s coronation was in 1902, so those bricks must be over 100 years old now and put there to celebrate the coronation. Also, according to the internet, an event took place in Birkenhead Park in 1902 for the coronation and they planted an oak tree. And finally, they built the Edward VII memorial clock tower, in 1911 which is at Clifton Crescent, Birkenhead.
yes Lainey lots of hidden liverpool history.just read there might be plans to reopen this as part of a new rejeneration of the areas. Thanks Lainey, hopeya well.
Great video. Someone told me the building front you can see from the tunnel plaza is actually Birkenhead Grange Road station and not Birkenhead Town. Don't know who's right.
16:27 up above on the right is where my dad used to park his car in the mid 70s I climbed up the wall and looked down near the arches where your mate is heading and in the tracks was a poor cat that had been cut in half by the wheels of a train. I’ll never forget that. Later on in the 80s the building that is up above on the right was a night club called Ruperts my first girl friend used to go there to get shagged lol.. there was a big shiny metal strip across the doorway and I reckon the bouncers used it to look up the girls skirts hahah
Used to walk through the old tunnel from woodside, must have been late 60's or early 70's. The sleepers had been removed and piled up to try and block the entrance. I must have been 12 or 13 yrs old.
Does anybody know of a Birkenhead Railway Station which had a pub next door which had a bar so thin you had to stand right next to the pumps and a pool room again with a narrow space around the table the cues were 2ft long?
The damage building was abacus cranes the Birkenhead town railway station was on the left on the corner next to the approach road to the Birkenhead tunnel
Was it,yes dont see why not after all the railway in edge hill is the oldest i think in uk,rainhill races with the famous rocket.going back at some point to do the rest.👌

The building is actually the remains of Grange Lane station, the predecessor to Town Station. The premises were later used by Abacus
