The best performance ever. Finally a reasonable, not "" traditional"" tempo. Pape's vibrato is absolutely exquisite. He and Hans Peter König should give lessons all over opera houses. There are only very few singers who are able to control their vibrato - something quite normally required for instrument players. Almost every singer - including any "star" - has one kind of vibrato that just "happens" to them. Without control of how fast, wide or regular it is. Pape is a perfection ❤
His voice is way too light for sarastro. Listen to martti talvela, mihaly szekely, kurt moll singing this aria their voices are much heavier and carry more weight to them.
Rene Pape is such a great baritone. So rich and powerful and commanding. I wish he had been the package deal with Renee Fleming for her performances of Thais instead of Thomas Hampson.
I like René Pape and all but he needs to work on his technique a bit. He should stop pushing on the low notes so they don't sound fry-ish, which was probably due to him being tired or in a bad mood in this performance. His high notes in other songs need practice, too, because they're super bright sometimes and can sound similar to nasality. But overall, I don't want to be a party pooper and trash this guy. He doesn't get the credit he deserves all the time from some internet trolls who love to hate on him.
He is a baritone tbh and it is just a bit odd for him to sing bass pieces Id say? like he just doesnt get a clean e and Like a proper bass should get to D cleanly and at a high standart even C or H. Deep basses are rare and I understand why you would tanke someone who kinda gets there because Basses are rare and people with good technique are even rarer. His high notes sound bright because they are not at the edge of his range but instead well within it, which just doesnt make them as powerful. Again not his problem but him being more of a high bass or baritone
B. K. Moll, K. Boehme, M. Talvela, F. Crass, L. Lemcke]!
I don't necessarily agree that he is a baritone. I think he's just a true bass who needs to work on his technique. In this performance, his voice was probably just in a bad mood and that is why his low notes in this video are somewhat constricted and sound similar to fry.
@@petroskalligas7186 Really? Yeah I guess sometimes his other performances can also be disappointing sometimes. I like him as a celebrity or as a public personality, but sometimes his singing voice isn't quite where it needs to be yet. Can you show me other examples of him frying his notes?
@@bradycall1889 unfortunately not "yet" he is almost 60. This a good performance of his, but still, he does not convey the confidence the role demands, especially in the beginning with the low notes being simply touched upon: ua-cam.com/video/kPcnKkJH3BQ/v-deo.html
@@tims.6286 But he does overbrighten sometimes and othertimes overdarkens and doesn't have the best technique. I like his bass speaking voice a lot more than his singing voice.

Just to help you enjoy more beautiful voices listen to Stefan Kocan a Slovak basso in this aria, should blow your mind
Thanks. Excellent.
Schöne Stimme, schöner Mann, komische Aktionen auf der Bühne

Warum schnell?

There are much better basses in recorded history [Kurt Moll, Ludwig Weber, Laszlo Polgar, Franz Crass, Kurt Boehme].
Baritone!
Thats never a Bariton, he graduated as Bass.
