You can do 1 of 2 things to keep the thread from tangling: 1 - every so often let the needle drop down like a pendulum and the thread should untwist itself. If it doesn't untwist all the way you can help it do so. 2 - wax your thread using beeswax. You can purchase little "cakes" of this or if you know someone who tends bees ask if they can provide you with a small bit of beeswax. You draw the thread across the beeswax firmly. When I was into embroidery years ago I used the "drop and twirl" method. I just learned about the waxing bit about 2 years ago now.
I use the first method all the time. I completely forgot about the second one, even though I knew about it before! Thanks for reminding me. I think in this case, the fabric was to blame (this piece was made of polyester). Thanks again for your message!
