    A really hot day at round 6 of the UCI XCO World Cup in Mont-Sainte-Anne, Canada saw riders having to battle heat and humidity on top of a notoriously technical track. The 4.1km course had a facelift for 2018, with a newly added loop adding fresh dirt to the legendary venue, which hosts La Béatrice, the most infamous downhill on the XCO circuit.

  • @mrsmartypants_1
    @mrsmartypants_1 3 роки тому

    Bleh. These riders are next level aerobic athletes - kudos to them - but the bikes are so incompetent on minor rocky descents that real mountain bikes would eat up going 4x faster. I guess I’d be ok with it if it wasn’t called mountain biking. It’d be like calling XC skiing alpine downhill skiing - the 2 sports have nothing in common. The former is done on near flat trails with max speeds of 15 mph. The latter is done on steep icy descents with speeds approaching 90 mph. Ditto with this XC biking stuff compared to EWS enduro and World Cup downhill mountain biking.

    • @4vR3n
      @4vR3n 3 роки тому

      Mountain bike would simply be 8 time slower in the climb. And the problem of downhill biking is that if ou remove the pedalling part, you might as well take a motocross, at least you can go up the hill with it without assistance. Downhill is redundant.

    • @mrsmartypants_1
      @mrsmartypants_1 3 роки тому

      4vR3n: Ha Ha. I mtb an average of 5 days a week on many different trail systems in my state and surrounding. Three are 15 minutes, 25 and 40 minutes from my house. Those are my daily rides. I resort ride maybe 3 times a year (ski lifts). So 95% how do you think I get to the top of the hills/mountains? Pedaling. I enjoy the uphill climbs. The downhill rush is my reward for the effort getting to the top. While an XC bike could get to the top on about 75% of the climbs it would involve numerous short walks between pedaling. XC bikes are not capable of the roots and jank on the steep switch backs. These trails are not the simple ascents in World Cup XC trails. They are orders of magnitude more difficult in the tough sections. So yeah my enduro bike most certainly is faster than XC bikes on these climbs. The simple climbs encountered on XC courses? XC bikes are of course significantly faster - that is their forte. My guess is - with a great rider - XC bikes may have a 20%-30% advantage. Purely an educated guess but hardly the absurd 800% you state. I love speed. I love jumps. I love drops. Much like skiing which was always my first love. Nothing like a great flow trail jump line for me (Picture A-line at Whistler). But I love it all when the wheels are tracking downhill. Don’t get me wrong - World Cup XC is awesome. Red Bull’s 3-year series “Fast Life” featuring Kate Courtney’s rise to the top is the best sporting series I have ever watched. It’s just not Mountain biking. It’s XC biking. (If you haven’t seen “Fast Life” watch it. UA-cam or Red Bull TV.).

    • @keirfarnum6811
      @keirfarnum6811 3 роки тому

      Have some respect! XC IS mountain biking. Back in the day, DH was something that only happened at the elite level. Mountain biking isn’t just about going down hill. Most of those enduro and DH guys would wimp out on a real 80 mile ride in the backcountry. I used to alpine ski race and, like you, thought the same about Nordic skiing; until I started racing XC and learned how brutal and hard endurance sports are. It takes incredible grit and a seriously high pain tolerance to do any endurance sport. And XC mountain biking puts that endurance with the high speed of going downhill too; so it’s the best of both worlds put together. Without XC, enduro and DH wouldn’t exist; for decades, XC was the only game in town.

    • @mrsmartypants_1

      @@keirfarnum6811 I have lots of respect for World Cup XC. Love watching race highlights and such things as Red Bull “Fast Life”. What makes it interesting is the race though - the competition - jockeying for the win. Merely watching an XC’r alone is like watching paint dry. The riding is boring. The trail is boring. Absolutely pro XC’rs are world class endurance athletes that follow punishing training regimes much like distance running or Nordic XC. Totally respect that. But it’s not mountain biking to me. I’ve never seen a XC bike on any mountain I’ve ever rode. If I did that person would be walking a lot and risking major injury. I’m biased towards speed, big jumps, drops, steep gnar. Consequential, adrenaline riding. Much like elite alpine skiing - my first love. I XC ski, skijor and snowshoe a lot. Mainly to stay fit and see wildlife... as a form of locomotion to get to backcountry winter campsites and to enjoy “my” wolf packs singing in the night. (I also do some dog mushing once or twice a year when a friend hooks me up with one of his teams which can get very exciting on winding fast trails.) XC skiing itself though is boring. What makes it fun is the environs I do it in. If I had to do it in semi-urban areas or rural farmland I wouldn’t do it. Life is too short. Mountain biking on the other hand is always exciting. Even the steep climbs up because it earns you that heart thumping ride down. Lift assisted resort riding is a form of cheating but it sure is fun a few times a year.
