Thermistor for measuring/controlling temperature

- All about thermistors for measuring and controlling temperature, including how to use the thermistor that's in an automobile coolant temperature sensor. I talk about the difference between Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) thermistors and Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) thermistors. I talk briefly about my experiment to test if cold water boils faster than hot water and then talk about the effect of the thermistor's
changing resistance on the electrical current running through a PC fan, to turn the fan on and off. I go over the electrical circuit for it in detail, incuding the homemade power supply, thermistor, PC fan and wiring.

Thanks. Another video's in the works. It's just taking a little longer than usual and I don't want to just rush one out.
I want to learn about thermistor today and this video explains it all. THANK YOU.
excellent work Steve!
Seriously underrated channel
Thanks. I'll have a look in a PC power supply for one too. I'm glad it brought you some fun!
This week's video is an electronics one all about using thermistors, what they are and how use them to measure and control temperature. I especially had fun doing the simple circuit where I heat up the thermistor with a hair dryer until that causes the fan to turn on. And then the fan cools off the thermistor, causing the fan to turn off!

Comrade thank you, I can't believe I couldn't find anything online when I typed in "thermal protection resistors" or "thermistor" even only came back with typical temp. measuring therms, not resistance regulating ones. Very good video
Thanks for this video! Any pointers on how to read a thermistor's label? Does "8L10 10002" mean it acts like a 10K resistor at room temperature?
Soooperb explanation 👌👌👌
This sensor is for attaching to the cooling system in a particular model of car, so you'd have to make your own mounting system.
To turn on a fan below 100C you can do what I did in the video. But it probably won't turn on at 100C. For that you'd need to add a resistor so that the total resistance adds up to something that would result in the right current for the fan. You also have to consider what temperature the fan should turn off at.
Search google for "pexsupply snap disc" for a better way.
You explained very well brother:))

Can we arrange this thermistor in series with AC current
Santosh Kulkarni I don't see why not. It's just a component whose resistance changes with temperature. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermistor talks about its use for current limiting.
Thanke you what did the sensor fit and how could I use it to turn a fan on when the temperature drops to 100 celcius
thank you for the help
in a real life scenario, aprox. how fast will let's say a NTC 5d-20 change from initial resistance to final resistance with 2A as final current in a current limiter configuration? Seconds, milliseconds? Minutes?
Totally awesomeeee thx a lot👌👌
I don't think it's a rectangular hyperbola since it looks like when it's near freezing the graph isn't parallel to that axis. I don't know what the fact that it's a curve means. Maybe it's something to do with the molecules or the bonds between them, but looking online I couldn't find any insight. And thanks! Glad you're still enjoying the videos.

Is there a way to directly measure the temperature of the thermistor to know how much heat/resistance it requires to allow current to the fan?
You're a pro
I just opened up with only PC power supply I have (outside of a computer) and it has SCK 054, an NTC thermistor. I don't want leave this power supply intact though in case I ever need it as such. At least I now know where to find them. Thanks!
Who downvoted this. It was super informative IMO. I was curious about how resistance can decrease with increase temp. Normally I thought it increased.
very nice
Superb sir
Thanks a lot 🙏
ah good very usefull everytime ;)
That was fun :)
Just grabbed what I thought to be one off an old PC power supply and had a little look. Green disc 'SCK 2R55A'. Thought may as well try it. Only 2.7ohms at 80F room temp. Held in hand it went to 2.5ohms, in front of a small fan, up to 3.3 ohms. At 10x those figures it would be similar to your automotive one...did a search and it is one, but nothing like as variable as that one you show. Still, I now know something more about them, cheers.

I want to build a circuit to trigger a buzzer if the temperature in my fridge gets too high. I lost a bunch of groceries after an electrical snafu in my home and wanted to prevent that from happening again.
Do you have any other videos which might help me understand how to design a battery supply which only began to feed power to something should another power source fail? I suppose I just want to learn how to design a portable back up battery. Portable as in I can easily carry it from one place to another and portable as in it could be easily adjusted for use with most DC supplied electronics.

I have a question for you , i gotta remote controlled car motor and i would like to place my custom fan for cooling which would be controlled by a NTC Thermistor. But i am a little bit confused about the temperature that i want it to turn on. Do you mind to help? I was thinking to M35 or 5D-11 would work. the heat goes on those brushless motors pretty high sometimes. I would like to find the right thermistor that it would turn on the fan around 150-175F. which model thermistor should i use do you think?
I couldn't find any data on the M35. The 5D-11 has the temperature range.
So it could be thw right option. Let me give it a shot and i will post my experience. Thank you so much.
According to the graph, cold water won't boil sooner than room temp water. Cold water will have a faster heat transfer rate while it is still cold, but once the cold water reaches room temp, the heat transfer rate will be the rate it should be for room temp water. So once the cold water reaches room temp it will take the same time from then on as room temp water does.
Amazing
From india
thanks easy understanding
God bless u....
Interesting, but why did you use a capacitor symbol for the NTC?
My Whirlpool gas dryer isn't getting hot enough and the clothes never get dry, the gas flame works, it's just shutting the heat off too soon, so I bought what is called a thermistor in a sealed plastic case that screws onto the exiting chamber after the blower. This did not solve the problem.
When I remove the thermistor as to not allow it to sense any warm temperature and left it plugged in the flame stays on endlessly. At first I assumed that even though the encased thermistor was new in the package that it might be defective straight from the manufacturer, but now that I see this video there are a few of these disc-like thermistors attached inside the dryers wiring harness, they are not seemingly positioned in any specific spot as if to sense temperature, but just part of the wiring, I always thought these were perhaps some sort of resistor, but instead they are identical to what you call a thermistor.
When I was at a dead end on what to do next then this video helped me to decide that the next thing I should try is to replace the short harness sections that contain these thermistors. Thanks for making this video.
very useful
Found a great one just now. Take a look for small green bulb type devices attached to back of large heatsinks. Got one from another PC power supply, it was 7.3K at rest in approx 80F. Blew on it for 30 seconds and it went to over 8K, warmed it between fingers and it went down to 6.5K. Can only imagine fridge and sun values...pretty good temp sensor for free, once calibrated. Perhaps to keep an unpowered eye on transistors or other circuits, or part of indoors/outdoors actual temp sensor :)
