Interestingly, on other videos they say to place the ruler on the top of the head and measure down to the top of the aluminum ring but you measured the inside dimensions. The difference is the thickness of the head material-which is better? Also most suggest measuring the diameter of the aluminum ring at several points and averaging it instead of relying on just a single measurement to account for any distortion that might have occurred over time. Finally since the head material stretches over time how does that affect the height measurement?

With my OME banjo, the tailpiece sits on the tension hoop, so when the crown height is wrong (in fact, the top of the tension hoop was below the flat surface of the head!),the tailpiece is too low relative to the flat surface of the head.

    1. Have acquired an OLD May Bell Banjo, had a skin head, I ordered an 11" Remo head, and it appears that the tension hoop won't fit over it w/o force. 2. The skin head had a tone ring, isn't the ring on the Remo head the same as the 'tone' ring. I'm new at all this so please don't be laughing at me.

The crown height of the head can also affect how the tailpiece sits relative to the surface of the head.

I discovered this the hard way: I had the wrong head crown height, so the tailpiece sat almost flat on the head, muting the sound.
