I did this and held them down with T posts. Baby Cottontails will get through. Use 2' chicken wire on the bottom of the fencing if you want protection from them.

We keep all our fruit and nut trees fenched just like you do until they are big enough to 'defend themselves'. At that point we corral groups of hazels with soft heavy deer fence. The wire cages are reusable of course. Cheers!

    Add bird netting?

Maybe unroll with curve down instead of up? The grass would hold it. That's how I did it.

I love your videos! I used cages like these when I moved my hazelnuts to my new house, but was trying to think of a better solution for clipping them together. Where do you get your industrial twisty ties? And the rebar stakes with the foot triangle at the bottom (not sure what that is called), where do you get them and do they have a more official name than "foot-triangle steppy-thing rebar stake?"

Hello, yes, the stakes are for temporary electric fences. They can be found in many different hardware or farm supply stores. Typically you will find two types; this stronger and thicker rebar variety and then a smaller smooth rod type. Either one will work well.

Wouldn't it be easier to fence in the whole field with electric fence

also more space for the hazelnut to grow. I'm going to do 4 foot between 150 length and plant the seedling row in the middle. So two fences 4 feet apart, 140 feet long and 28 seedlings planted....
