@@djntu2964 yes thats what I thought too, Pele. When I hear stories or legends of other culture I see the connection with us too. This past year has been a wake up call for us all and a reminder of our ancestors who STILL walk this earth. Big Island get so many stuff still go on there till this day like Night Marchers that legend is true and fireballs can still be seen in the sky sent by those families who still practice that.

Oshun is spiritual manifestation of the physical Osun river in Nigeria. The Sun river gave them life physically, so the Orishas Oshun is the spiritual element of the physical life-giver. - "The Oṣun River (sometimes, but rarely spelt Oshun) is a river that flows southwards through central Yorubaland in southwestern Nigeria into the Lagos Lagoon and the Atlantic Gulf of Guinea.". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osun_river

It’s beautiful how much in common Oshun has with her mother Yemoja (though in some myths they are sisters). Both of them are the paramount deities of rivers in the Yoruba pantheon. The major differences between the two, is that Yemoja is considered “the metaphysical mother of all Orishas”, she is associated with motherhood/the fetus & amniotic fluids specifically, & is associated with the largest river in Yoruba land- the Ogun river etc. In AfroLatino denominations of Yoruba religion, Yemoja is also considered the co-ruler of the oceans/seas with Olokun. The “ocean/seas levels closets to the sun’s light, thus that have the most life”. As Yemaya was the Orisha that comforted the enslaved-Africans across the Atlantic, who would become AfroBrazilians, AfroCubans etc. Like all old & powerful world religions, Yoruba religion has various different poems, myths & stories that canonically contradict one another. And that is fine, religions are organic, they develop from a people-group through time. The Yoruba have always been diverse with many different sub-groups & city-states since the beginning. With that being said, there are many different traditional-origin stories for Yemoja & the world. In one myth, Yemoja is a “primordial Orisha” & was one of the 16 Orishas sent to prepare creation, as was Olofi’s command. It’s similar to the Oshun myth isn’t it. In another myth Yemoja was created from Olokun’s body & in another myth Yemoja is the daughter of Obatala. Speaking of Obatala, Obatala “the maker of human bodies”, in many traditions is gender-fluid, having both a female & male form. I hope HomeTeam makes a video on Yemoja, Oya, & Oshun some day, they are my favorite Orishas. ❤️

Well done for spelling 'Osun' as Africans in Nigeria spell it. Oshun, Ochún, Oxúm. are new world ways of spelling the name of our diety. Nowhere in the New World is a vicinity or place name given to any African deity. though now extremely Muslim and Christian the ancient history is still visible and places ar enamed after our deities. I have heard Cuban exponents of the African religion suggest that Oshun is a different deity to Ọṣun. suggesting that the orisha Oshun was created in the new world not Africa. Leading to be depiction of her as a very fair skinned or even white. No she is our Orisha. O' re Ye Ye.

Oba was his first wife, which he left for Oya and learned from her the magic of lightning, at that time oshun was the wife of Ogun, it was her dance(naked, covered in honey) that entranced Sango, she used this same skill to lure ogun from his madness and solidarity in the woods. They(osùn and sango) bore the ibeyi(twins)

Thanks for the alternative spin on the "Oshun is all as all about love and happiness" narrative. I've watched a lot of videos and read a lot of posts about her, yet none of what I watched/read mentioned how *pivotal* she was to the creation of humanity, nor how she also possessed the power to DESTROY in addition to CREATE. It makes her more balanced. Thanks again! ❣️💫

But Oshun DOES NOT destroy. That is not her domain, of the six that make the seven, they all have their embodiments. They’re three feminine manifestations of God and Three masculine Manifestations of God. Yemonja gives life, Osun is the EXPEREINCE of life, Oya is the destruction and transmutation of life. So, no, It is not in Osuns energy to destroy. She’s not a creation deity either, in that sense of childbirth and such. If you’re experiencing wrath, then you’re experiencing the manifestation of Oya who is the destroyer, because the three feminine energies will individual are one. A sacred trinity in a way.

Love your videos! 💞Oya actually played that nasty trick on Oba not Oshun. Oba was Shango's first wife, then Oya, and lastly Oshun which bore the twins for him. Oya was envious of Oba and knew her insecurity was her ears. Oya wanted Shango so bad that she would do anything to get him. After getting him Oya taught him many beautiful powers, but she was also very controlling. Shango; being who he was hated this and left in the most epic way possible. By faking his death. He eventually ran off with Oshun. Not painting her to be innocent. She had been watching him for a very long time. Plotting if you will. Studying the character of the three Goddesses it makes sense that it is believed to be Oshun, but this type of ruthlessness fits Oya alot better. Different cultures believe different stories though.

Nigerians are Ghanaian still worship water gods and godesses. Commonly described as 'mammy water's. Its a shame that we dont know much about these historical figures.

Thank you brother this helped. I always knew I was linked to Africa in some way or another. Led here today after a tarot reading on UA-cam that described one of my main spirit guides as Oshun. Incidentally, I also named my cat Osh.

Orisa Osun did not only assist in helping with human beings creation but the creation of the earth. Of the water deities, Osun is one of the most popular. Orisa are cosmic divine forces and the stories of their more human traits are used to teach human beings about their own behaviors. Osun teaches leadership skills and how if choosing love over fotce will assist us in our daily walk here on earth.

I am someone who is fluent in both English and swahili as I continue to watch this channel I hope to find more information.

Heyy this my first time commenting on your channel! And I gotta say thank you for sharing these beautiful stories and history of Africa. Your Awesome!!😃
Hopefully you do Mami Wata, since I'm writing about mermaids this would be Great. Since she's not apart of the Orisha patheon. But she grasp inspiration from Marie Laveu and others, she's interesting to read.
Your videos are Amazing keep it up!!

Mami Wata is understood to be a manifestation of Yemoja which is an Orisha. Haitian Vodou refers to "La Sirene" (the mermaid), which has the same attributes as Yemoja/Mami Wata etc, so many of them are interpreted as different aspects of the same entity as interpreted by the various West African people,
The Yoruba Yemoja is the Fon's Mami Wata which is the Haitians La Sirene, etc. "Agwe and La Sirene in Haitian Vodou": ua-cam.com/video/6oaOCzXse1c/v-deo.html

Nice video! Just for the record, here in Brazil, we write Oxum, but it's spelt very much as Ošun or Oshun. As for Xango, it's the same: de x doesn't sound like z, but like Sh.

Ore Yeye o: The kindness of (our) mother.
You got the significance of the Iyalode title correct. There are still women who bear that title today, it is very prestigious. The word Iyalode translates to "Mother Warrior." Like most Orishas, Oshun has many aspects. From the Santeria/Lukumi perspective (Cuban), we call those aspects "caminos" or roads (in the Nigerian system, I believe they are called Oriki or "praise names"). The roads of Oshun represent the entirety of the feminine experience from girlhood up until eldership. There are caminos of Oshun that are connected to music and dance (Oshun Ibu Anya), some to divination (Ibu Kolé), wealth (Oshun Ibu Olodi), poverty (Oshun Akparo), etc.
Oshun is important to women in some obvious ways, but she is just as important to men. She helps us understand our own feminine energies to achieve balance with our masculinity. As with all orishas, her significance is internal and external. Yes, she represents love and sensuality, but also self-esteem and self-care; how other people may feel about you and how you feel about yourself. In the stories about her, Oshun was essentially tasked with overcoming her own insecurity (hence the pettiness, jealousy, etc.). For those of us who worship her, she helps us overcome those flaws and compassionately corrects us when we exhibit them.
