  • July 16, 2021 marks forty years to the day since the Headingley Test of the 1981 Ashes started. The Test series is remembered as one of the greatest ever played, with one man at the heart of it all. Ian Botham was Player of the Match in the three games England won, with his 149* at Headingley helping script an incredible comeback, only the second time in history a team had won after following on. In the second of a five-part series, Botham remembers that remarkable game in all its glory.

I had a huge motorcycle accident in 1981, hit off by a drunk driver. I was in hospital for what was to be the beginning of a four-year, agonizing recovery. That first part of the first year was spent in bed. No radio, no other entertainment apart from looking at, and interacting with the untouchable and gorgeous trainee nurses who were all my age, and a small TV high on the wall, permanently set to BBC2. Cricket was on then, when the BBC was value for money and actually cared about the license payers and what they wanted. I had no choice but to watch it, and it was this series that I watched. Having only ever watched rugby before that, I slowly worked out the rules of cricket, well, the main ones at least, and by the third test I was enthralled. I have never forgotten it, and it was the reason that I still love watching cricket at 63-years old. I have two sporting heroes, Ian Botham and Barry Sheene. I will only ever forget this series either when I die, or through illness or old age,

The absolute highlight of my childhood. I will never forget those images. I have never smiled so much watching sport. We have great all rounders now in the England team, but nothing will beat Botham, Willis, Dilley and Brearley and what they gave us in 1981 . i never tire of watching this.

Amazing memories of a historical test match . But Dickie Bird is full of s..t . No captain would ever discuss his tactics with an umpire . They are supposed to be neutral .

Bit of artistic licence for Dicky Bird! Yorkshire has a reputation for tall tales - he's just a thoroughbred Yorkshireman. Absolutely superb chap by all accounts.

@@steveboston5948 I have nothing but respect for Dickie Bird , as an Umpire and as a bloke. As you said , he is a bit prone to embellishments in his stories. But he was part of the golden age of cricket , with great players and Radio commentators. It was so much fun in those days .

Blowers became a national treasure at TMS. I didn't realize he was previously part of the gutter press, writing a nasty personal attack on Botham before '81.

As an American I still don’t really understand the format of test cricket but this was a really interesting sports documentary…I’ve been trying to immerse myself in all things cricket ever since I watched The Test on prime video…plus Tom Hardy’s narration in this documentary is a plus

Test is like 2 50 overs matches back to back over a 5 day period.
80 overs bowled a day is the target. It's fantastic stuff.
Are you watching any of the T20 World cup in USA???

@@deckyBWFC91 hell yeah…it was awesome watching the United States team beat Pakistan last week…but I made that comment about a year ago and I now know a lot more about the sport since then…and playing Cricket24 on PlayStation helps…but I still don’t get what the hell a power play is…something to do with where fielder’s can stand during a delivery I think

    • @deckyBWFC91
      @deckyBWFC91 3 місяці тому

@@FartsForEyes yep, power play is in first 6 overs, only one fielder can stand outside the outer circle, rest stand in close inside inner circle

Mike Brearley. An astounding bat for Middlesex and England. And an astounding England captain; more than once. :)

Superb documentary. Use of still photographs is nice touch - photos often convey far more information than a moving image.

Good that this doc doesn't romanticise the Thatcher years and shows it for what it was

The narrative from the 3rd test annoys me. Lillie and Marsh bet on their own team losing and it is called a 'joke' bet, even decades later. Salman Butt and Mo Amir bowl 2 deliberate no-balls and get 6 months in jail. I know everyone loves to talk about how great Botham and Willis were that week, but not nearly enough attention is given to the actions of some Australians in their own demise. Anyone betting against their own team should be banned for life from the sport. These guys got off way too lightly.

Marsh & Lillee were inveterate punters, and the odds on offer were too good to ignore, but to suggest it affected their performance in the game it a step too far. However actually deciding to deliberately bowl a no ball/wide etc over which you have complete control, knowing that you are doing so so that you/your 'consortium' has a one way bet, with no chance of loosing is a totally different matter. It's akin to bookmakers taking losing bets on races that have already run & the result of which they already know, while refusing to accept any bets on the winner. It's a totally different situation & all those bowlers involved in spot fixing deserved to be removed from the game(google 'spot fixing in cricket for details)

Wouldn't get away with it today in any sport. Different times in '81 - police brutality, rampant corruption, and a Tory government🤣
