- Switzerland’s Federal Council has been elected on December 11, 2019. The Green Party was not able to win a seat and therefore all members are the same as before the election. Sound confusing? Tanya König breaks it all down.

Amazing system
I guess the french revolutionaries can rest easy knowing that someone implemented their system, even if it wasn't... you know... the french
@Jokolo what do you mean!? Switzerland wasn‘t a united republic before the french invasion in 1798. The current system was implemented in 1848 and by all means heavily influenced by the french revolution.
@der Führer yeah, I think so
@Bernhard Schwarz wait, really? Jesus, France has been influential
the goal of the french revolution wasn't democracy
@@lubu2960 It’s more complex, proponents of decentralized (direct) democracy were strong during the French Revolution. Eventually they were not the strongest driving force, but they were present. In the end even the more elitist republicans lost to the empire, it does not mean that the French Revolution was not for the Republic.
Way better system. Having a single person in power is not optimal
totally depends on the person, checks and balances
I think the point is, that it's perfectly optimal for that single person.
Checks and balances have very clearly not worked in any case... Normally because that one person in power has the power to fiddle with checks and balances, for example the US president gets to appoint supreme court justices and the Attorney General@@emreduygun
I don‘t understand why not more countries try to emulate this type of government. You have all the benefits of a multiparty system, without the drawback of forming a new government every election cycle with long coalition talks and possibly re-elections if the coalition fails.
Because power shapes society, not good intentions.
It is a very complicated system, which is unique only for Switzerland.
The Federal Council is a bit like the Directoire, though only superficially. It balances the Swiss system of initiative and abrogative referenda: the Council tries to make compromises which will not be overturned by referenda, and referenda cannot be used tactically to discredit or destabilise the governing party, since all the major parties already share in government. No Swiss politician becomes too powerful by whipping up an electoral majority and humiliating his opponents as happens elsewhere. In consequence, Swiss politics which is often slow and unadventurous also avoids many big mistakes, and goverrnment does not dominate over the citizen.
