My first 3 grows were in my shed with a 45 dollar blurple light, ocilating fan, miracle grow soil, heater, and Epson salt. They didn't give me huge yields but great smoke. This was late 2018 keep in mind. But can be done cheap. Now I've got 3 tents and close to 1000 watts of LEDs split between them with AC infinity fans and all organic. Start small with what you got and work your way up.

Just into flower on my first grow ever. One big way I saved money was by using the light of a mate who's out of the country at the moment. Not having to buy I light I could invest into other equipment alot more.
Sewing your own fabric pots is also a good one. Mean you can get any size you want effectively free if you scrounge material.
    Great podcast as always

If you look on the rafters in most barns there will be piles of free bat guano. Drywall scraps are almost entirely made of gypsum which makes a great source of calcium and ph up. Compost and earthworm bins will save you a ton as well. The things you mostly spend money on are the electrical devices and lights, fans, etc, the soil, the genetics, nutrients, pots, meters and sensors, and the electricity itself.

If you want to do a budget grow invest time and labor in finding some good dirt and building a compost pile from leaves and grass clippings and food waste. When u go to the grocery store ask for paper bags that you can shred and compost. Gather other native plants and weeds from around your house and neighborhood and compost. Use sweat to build fertility in an outdoor bed. Might take a year of labor to get it really fertile but then you have the soil for a great outdoor grow

I found a travelling luggage rack with a zip up plastic cover that looks like a small grow tent for 20 bucks at Walmart and tossed the cover to use the rack to hang lights and fans. I boxed it in on 3 sides with flat white cardboard panels and duct tape to reflect the light. It gives me a 3x4 space and produces consistently about 5 z with 150hps, 4 CFL, and a small 8" LED adjustable RWB grow light and 2 small fans
Electric bill for the entire set up is about 20$ /month.

My first light was a 150hps with 4 crl spirals for side lighting. I have since added an LED. Total in lights 300 bucks. I get about 5 z in a 3x4 area each run. I have a veg mom chamber in another room I got for 10 bucks at a garage sale, an old phototron with a top light I added and fans in at the bottom and out at the top. I can use it to make clones when necessary. I've been lucky to be blessed with an ideal environment without much effort. It remains about 75 f and 50 to 70 percent humidity year round and allows for good air flow. No pests or mildews other than the occasional fungus gnats.

Five gallon buckets from Lowes and Walmart are way cheaper than any pot from a hydroponic store. I'm pretty cheap when it comes to things like pots I bought 2 and 1/4 gallon mop buckets from Dollar Tree for a dollar. I look to cut cost on things like this because all my money goes into the important things like genetics. Seeking sponsorships is a good way to get free things if you have an established social media platform.

I always thought the soil was best suited for the environment..but I add a shit ton of shit though. No matter what, you'll get hooked on growing. That means you'll wanna research everything possible about the subject, which presents new avenues of knowledge you didn't even knew existed. I agree with Pigeons in running lights at night being potentially cheaper, it's also cheaper because it's colder at nights so not running an ac as hard to get to the correct temps as well too, or may make it so you don't need to invest in that AC unit.
IF you're going to get a AC unit go ahead and get one that dehumidifies too, I bought a de humidifer and realized it spikes my temps up way too much so it was a silly purchase when for another $100-200 i could of gotten the combo unit.
Speaking of grateful grower, he was a fantastic grower, and the one that made me want like 1-2+ lb plants indoors, there's so many old gems that've left youtube, like Wizard NPK was a MONSTER grower too, and a wealth of information he worked some magic with bamboo stakes..

I'd love to hear you guys discuss where you get your seeds (reputable businesses) and why you choose to grow autoflowers or feminized or clones...the pros and cons of these different approaches. In this episode you touched on flavour vs potency but you didn't go very deep into it...I'd love to hear more!
What is the fair price for a seed, knowing how much work goes into cultivating a strain? Is there a seed company that you return to again and again because the results are consistent and reliable?

What I can say from my experience with PH testers.
I started with a cheapo $10-$15 meter from Amazon. It worked well for a month or 2 then started acting up and couldn’t get it to calibrate right.
After that, I switched to the PH Strips which is a very cheap route. But I can without a doubt say that the strips worked better than the cheap PH pen. It worked well just comparing the color chart and never had issues.
After awhile, I became uncomfortable not knowing the exact PH value of my input water. I purchased an Apera PH-20 which is a high end budget friendly PH pen ($50ish) comes with 4.0 and 7.0 calibration fluid and a nice case to hold it all as well.
Couldn’t be happier with my purchase and it’s been smooth sailing ever since.

You guys are hitting homeruns. Budget grows with re-purposed gear can give fire results. The difference is in the craft and skill of the grower. Weed will grow and deliver in a wide latitude of conditions. All the tents and specific gear do is get you to a higher level of process refinement and control, which hopefully results in maxing the plant potential. In the end the budget dude grows a Corvette and the full set-up grows a Ferrari. Despite the price difference, both are fearsome precision machines. I overwinter cuts from outdoors and make lots of clones each spring under cheap LED shoplights of 5000K. The ones with the 2 round tubes; not the ones with lens. They run super cool. I figure something is working. Because sometimes months later, the original leaves I trimmed as clones are still green.
I heard in "another" podcast that humic acids will lock up the chloramine in tap water. Can't remember who said that, but good job.
Electrical tip: Pick up a copy of the electric code. Find published wiring diagrams from renovation contractors, showing what you can do and how to. Don't tap the panel.> Add a circuit. Re-purpose a baseboard heater circuit 240V into two 120V. Even into single plug with each socket a separate circuit.

I'm late to the party but budget doesn't necessarily mean cheap. It's what you can afford. My budget for my first grow was around $800 for everything including post harvest supplies etc. Made some upgrades in-between but still spent around 1100. Someone can have a budget of $5000+ and some can have a budget of only a couple hundred dollars.

I don't understand anyone who uses cannabis regularly but says they can't afford to grow. 1 grow pays for itself. 2 grows saves you money.

Hey Stash dude's. Hello from Arizona. Your allowed to grow 12 plants here. We have 3 marshydro 3×3 tents with ts1000 lights. Been growing since March. 4 plants per tent, a month apart. The biggest expense I found is the seeds. Still learning, can't get cloning down yet, working on it!
