    Back in 93 my friend and I camped out in the bowl hoping to get an early start and a bunch of runs. Instead we helped to carry out a skier with a compound fracture. That is is not the place to get hurt. It took us a while just to get him to the hojo. I must add I have had some great times up there.

    People seem to forget that the out-run from a cliff can be pretty dangerous. Being able to ride it out is part of hucking cliffs and is an important skill to be learned before hitting places like tuckerman's... which has a long and choppy out-run. This video is an example of how to really hurt yourself. Epic crashes though.

    At the time of year when everybody hikes up to the Ravine, the snow is pretty much like mashed potatoes. you climb early morning so you can get a foot hold...the previous days footsteps are like a staircase...by by mid morning, it's mashed potatoes and hard to ski well. Even great skiers look like dweebs when skiing in it. However, it's a worthy Spring ritual.

    I grew up skiing but switched to boarding soon after. So I can't attest to this myself but it seems that at that speed, on skis it would be harder to slow down than if on a snowboard. Although mid thought I get the feeling that it would be so so scary to try and make the smallest carve in attempt to slow yourself at that speed on any instrument.. yeesh...i cringe. No, you would not destroy the ice fields of Cannon. I know dozens upon dozens of people that come from out West (both for racing and freeskiing) that get destroyed by the ice. USSA and FIS points don't lie. People that are "hardcore" in racing out West struggle here in the East. As for freeskiing there is really no point system, but I've met a handful of kids that go to academies around here for freestyle (Burke, WVA, CVA) that have come from places like Vail and Mammoth and can't handle the ice

    • @hibrother6764
      @hibrother6764 6 років тому

      I probably misread your comment, but there is a points system for Freeride, AKA Big Mountain, and I know this as it is what I compete in. You get judged on Style, Fluidity, Technique, control and Line Choice. You can get a maximum of 50 points, but it is very rare to see someone surpass 38,

    Any one who thinks landing that and staying up is easy has likely never been there. Landing on about 50-degree slope of choppy, soft snow already doing about 30-40MPH is no small feat. Most of you would sh*t your pants standing atop the Headwall, much less those drops/ledges. Trust me, this is one of the most humbling places you will ever ski or ride, once you are actually on it. Riding over The Lip feels like riding over a cliff. And only way there is one step at a time...
