Great review, nice coverage of the fact an LS isn't a requirement

We appreciate it! We are trying to make that more clear as we make these videos and talk about the different approaches you can take!

Hi Sean. Super loved this video! I have a 79 traveler with all original equipment, even suspension. It is in almost as good of shape as this traveler, but in Persimmon color. I agree, to own a vehicle like this means embracing eveything about it. Once it twice a week I drive it 60mph on I-5 going to work in San Diego, while everyone in a hurry whizzes by. I LOVE it. Btw, Ben's video of the yellow R2.8 was great too. Love your work, appreciate your getting more scouts back on the road.

I’m in the Central Valley of California, I know of several scouts that have been sitting for years, drive by them everyday to go to work. There are a lot of them out here, many still being used on farms.

Excellent video… well done Sean on this one and explaining original platform & the LS option .. you are 💯right with embracing an old scout if you want to keep original platform. Cheers from Australia & you will see our Electric Scout platform pretty soon in 2023. Awesome work guys ❤

Thank you for featuring a Traveler!... I have a Traveler here in Australia and there were not that many imported maybe a few thousand & even less of the 80/800!
I love mine as its original and in pretty good shape... Have a look!
PS I follow everything you guys do through social media, a scout obsessive I guess!
If I win the lottery I will ship it over for a full resto!
    Cheers!

I always liked the ride with the slightly longer wheelbase of the Terra/Traveler. I miss my '77. Also nice to sleep in the back without laying diagonal or having the tailgate open.

Yep! Sometimes you come across some you just can't touch! Gotta respect the past and keep ones like these on the road!

    That is a beautiful truck!!!!
I had one just like it with black wheel flairs but I'm pretty sure it was a Traveler. 304 2bbl carb.
I still have the original receipt from the dealer, the only options that were added was a larger fuel tank
(Pretty sure it was 30 gallons with a drain plug) and white wagon wheels.
I bought it from a good friend in 1984 who was the original owner and paid $750 for it.
Unfortunately by 1986 it was pretty rusty.😢

Well said Sean. I am constantly torn with my original platform having young twins. It is a love-hate relationship. I live at 6,500 feet and constantly drive between 6,500 and 10,500 feet of elevation. My Carb has definitely tested my patience, along with all the wiring glitches. 78 Scout II originally sourced from Rancho Cucamonga, CA, now residing in the Teton Mountains of Wydaho. Hopefully, I can send her to you one day for the LS swap.

Thanks guys! IH SCOUTS and TRAVELERS are still the most unknown and unheralded 4x4's ever made in the USA. They deserve better!!! OK, they DIDN'T have JEEP's FT/AWD but rather the standard PT, THREE MODE SELECTABLE one, ie. 4x4H&L/2WD. Most of the time the latter sufficed for city&suburban use. 4WDHIGH for "slick" conditions, 4WD LOW for DEEP SNOW&WATER and ICE.
2WD option also had another benefit, BETTER GAS MILAGE. (This was REALLY great in 1979/80 when the 2and ARAB OIL EMBARGO hit and prices for gas and diesel SOARED yet again to record high levels.

We had a Scout Traveler when I was 15. It was a maroon color with similar white stripes to this one. It had a diesel engine (Nissan I think) with a manual transmission. It had a heavy duty front bumper with an electric winch. Would that drivetrain and equipment have been factory options?
Our family drove it all the way from Wisconsin to Alaska, up the Alaska highway pulling a pop-up camper.
I do remember that the diesel engine was a dog for power. But I wish I had that vehicle today.

I found a 1980 traveler with the sd33t Diesel engine and a t19 transmission and Dana 300, and basically put all of it in to my 1974 scout ii because the traveler was WAY TOO RUSTY!

I have two scouts in bad shape. One (1979) has a ton of rust, dead trans, but a 345 in great shape. The other (1977) has a 304 that needs some TLC and a decent trans/transfer but is missing a few other things. I'm debating on whether I should move the 345 and other parts to the '77 and scrap the '79 or if it's worth fixing up both.

@@anythingscout Thanks for the input! I decided to keep both -- one as a daily driver and the other as an off-road beater. Kinda tempted to do an EV conversion on one...

The trouble with IH SCOUTS is finding mechanics who are familiar enough to competently work on them. Many IHC dealerships where you'd previously go have closed and shut down Even if open? Many are unwilling to service or repair them. No.more requirements by the government to stock parts for them!

    • @blessthismess4304
      @blessthismess4304 3 роки тому

This has been my experience for sure. No one in my town will work on them, including a mechanic who literally owned the same year and model Scout as mine. He’ll talk your ear off about it, but he won’t touch it!

Didn't hear anything about it, so I will state the obvious...it is a Terra? Terras have tailgates and a fiberglass half cab. I'm guessing the top needed to have hatch hardware, and there were holes in the floor from the mount points for the old cab. Must have been that way when they got it, but the title has to say Terra.
