    Although Emma is not European, the movie is British, so she gets some points for that... apart from her wonderful performance. If Sandra doesn't win here, it's the end for her.

    I think that as good as Sandra is in Anatomy, it's nothing I haven't seen begore and Emma is just on another level. Her growth is perfectly callibrated througout the movie. Her movements, the way she uses objects, the way she talks are all maturing, while still undoubtedly being the same character. Also, she has such a juvenile glance at the start and over the course of the movie she lets intelligence seep into her eyes. Especially at the end of the movie when you think back at were she started and how she convincingly got there is fantastic. I don't think anyone else could have played the part as convincingly as she did. That doesn't necessarily mean I think she'll win (especially since she has already won before and it's a fantasy movie), but I hope she does.

    I’m with Sandra Huller for Best Actress. Much as I agree with a lot of what you both said, you were a bit scant in your praise for her performance in Anatomy of a Fall which I personally found riveting from start to finish. Plus Emma Stone is a recent winner and Sandra Huller has two acting nominations this year. I found her equally riveting in The Zone of Interest which I happened to see a week apart from Anatomy of a Fall. Seeing those performances close together reinforced my conviction that she is due an award this year.

    I've got a question for anyone here. I'm a fairly new SAG-AFTRA member (I'm in the AFTRA part, I work in radio, which is why I'm clueless) my votes are due in a few days, and I'm quickly trying to catch up. How am I supposed to interpret "Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture"? I can see three ways of parsing this: 1. The best ensemble performance, the one that really feels like everyone is part of the same universe and telling the same story; 2. The movie with the greatest number of great actors doing great work; or 3. I shouldn't take the wording of the category too seriously and just think of this as SAG's version of the Best Picture award. It makes a difference, because I would vote for different movies depending on whether I'm just judging the acting in a certain way as opposed to picking what I think is the best film overall. What do you think? I welcome all opinions.

    • @ella2117
      @ella2117 9 місяців тому

      2, but 3 is also valid. Vote for the movie you preferred and don't think too much about it ;)

      Another radio SAG-AFTRA member here. Personally I take "Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture" literally. I focus on the overall performances, not necessarily the movie as a whole. But I think a lot of voters view this category as SAG's Best Picture and vote accordingly. Just trust your gut and have fun!

      Actually the conversation has moved towards Poor Things being divisive among people & Industry members, explains Hüller talk being an upset. Several awards pundits have remarked Thing’s “weird” sensibilities maybe is beginning to divide the older Academy voters. They mentioned it in more than one GoldDerby videos. Doing well at the Box Office doesn’t really count the amount of walk-outs the film has, so that’s not entirely true.

      @@reeldeal3227Uh no, there’s been several incidences of the film being a divisive split-among critics & pundits circles. Ignore the general audience, Poor Things is starting to or becoming a hit or Miss for people, it’s European sensibilities will do great for BAFTA, but SAG? Awardsdaily posted a podcast today & there said there’s been chatter that PT is starting to become that divisive film where you love it or hate it. Since you mentioned Stone, yes, she’s been out campaigning & trying to justify her film as a feminist film against the backlash(inferring it’s more exploitative than empowering). That’s another clue, she’s having to speak & defend her film, they mentioned as I said on GoldDerby-I’m not making it up. Making do more research than living idly in your echo chamber.

      @@reeldeal3227No, the conversations are being had in critics & pundits circles, that Poor Things is becoming this divisive, hit-or-miss for some. The pundits at GoldDerby have mentioned it several times & a podcast episode from Awardsdaily referenced the blowback from several industry members. PT has very European sensibilities whereas actual Industry voters can become hesitant for a film where it’s sexual themes flirt w/ children’s minds(Actual critic line, not mine).
      Stone is magnetic on the campaign trail but she’s also having to defend the film from “exploitative” claims. Whether it’s front runner fatigue or the novelty shine has wore but the criticisms can follow it all the way to Oscar night.

    I really do not understand where all the talk for Barbie to win Screenplay is coming from.
    The only way I can rationalize it is that the Academy will throw Barbie a sympathy award in screenplay since it does not look likely to win any other above the line award. Its a way to keep the legions of Barbie fans happy while also awarding Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach - who are very talented writers but Barbie is easily their weakest film. Its ridiculous that Barbie is even nominated for screenplay given that is has mediocre writing at best.
    Barbie started off with an interesting dynamic of the human + doll connection and how the human's emotions are impacting Barbie in Barbie world, but it completely abandoned this concept once Barbie reaches the real world and never fully explores it.
    The whole Mattel executives plotline barely had any impact on the movie (apart from giving us a silly hide-and-seek game in the offices and and an even worse car chase scene). The only good thing about the Mattel plotline was the old woman who Barbie meets, but it doesn't make up for the rest of the wasted time.
    The dialogue felt very surface-level and nothing special there, even the monologue by America Ferrera, which was just too direct. There are so many better ways to include social commentary in a film, ask Parasite - a worthy Screenplay winner among other awards.
    At the end of the day, Barbie was an average crowd-pleaser film with some good moments of humor, but not at all worthy of Oscar wins in the above-the-line categories, especially not when other brilliantly written films like Poor Things, Oppenheimer, KOTFM, American Fiction exist.
