Daniel Waples is a musician who has traveled the world with his hand-pan, producing ethereal, other-worldly sounds. He both describes and performs this steel-drum related instrument in this infectious Talk of a busker in love with his role as an artist.
Now with over 30 millions views on UA-cam, Daniel Waples has recorded 10 albums to date and performing in almost 50 countries across 6 continents. Waples supports himself as an independent musician, spreading the gospel of the HandPan, an acoustic musical instrument associated with energy work and alternative healing, and one which he hopes will become a Symbol for universal peace and the Inner journeys all people take pursuing their individual Paths. He is currently working very closely alongside the makers of the instruments that he plays.

Absolutely amazing! Keep up your amazing passion. Your experiences are very relatable since music is one of my great passions and I play several instruments ( hoping a hang drum will be one of them). I'm trying to make enough money in order to buy a hang drum or a RAV drum. Once again, keep up the good work and thanks for sharing mate.

I'm one of those people that have been touched by the incredible sounds that you create with that simple metal hand pan. The instrument and the music you create are what I use to relax.
There is no doubt in my mind Daniel, that when you are 89 there will be people thanking you for the influence you have had on their lives.

I love what you do on this thing. Got into it having seen David Kuckherman playing several at a Dead Can Dance gig. I've got the new Oval thing on preorder via Kickstarter. It's a digital version with MIDI, and all that good stuff. I know it's not going to have the same vibe as a real one but would love to see you trying one out ... and I'm sure the guys at Oval would too.

Having a fiance myself, to whom living the life is only worthy while following their passion, even tho that brings financial instability and the pressure from the family about future, pension etc., I utterly admire whoever decides to follow their passion, despite possible challenges and obstacles in their way. I want to get into making them but I can't believe the barriers the original owners are trying to put up now.. 16 years after it was first sold. I feel elated to be given the opportunity to make such things and a sense of injustice that something so beautiful has been corrupted by greed. You are quite right to cite the Trinidadian steel pan origins. Quite right indeed. No music exists in a vacuum and seeign the innovation in the second hand pan with the notes underneath to lower and extend the melody just makes me sad for the original makers.
p.s Did you have your original hang stolen? You keep talking about losing/getting back your wings..
Inspiring... i feel like id intuitively meld with this instrument in a deep way... i feel a bit sad that it's not so readily available and yet another part of me is glad that it's a bit of a unique and special thing. Cheers Danial for sharing the beauty!

hi daniel , i was in goa east part of india with my friends and that was the first time i saw this unique instrument ,this guy from germany was playing it with so ease .the sound is still fresh in my ears .i am searching for a piece for me and would try to learn myself ,can u help . namaskar

This instrument takes you to some place heaven, unfortunate that this is underrated but you're right when you quoted that it gives calm to people hustling in their lives! I'm in jersey - did you mention Jon that makes this instrument? Would like to get one. Also, if you could recommend which one to buy, it'd be of fantastic help! Keep up the great work buddy, this art needs to reach out to masses!

I wish so badly that I could get one of these gorgeous instruments. Unfortunately, my family is going through some financial trouble and my parents won't let me buy anything worth 100 bucks much less 2 grand. Every time I hear these instruments, I feel more positive than I ever could in real life.
+Julia Crawford I can totally relate, I grew up in a house with no wall paper or carpet. I began to work full time at the age of 13. I even had to borrow the money to be able to buy my first handpan... my suggestion to u is to save up some cash where you can and look at a hapi drum mini... they are a great place to start :)

I have enjoyed your music for quite some time, and to hear you combined with TED is a wonderful thing. I have a question if you do not mind. Watching the videos on youtube. I think i like a few other amazing artists better than the amazing Daniel. But I think the biggest Daniel legacy when it comes to handpans is his passion on spreading the word on this instrument, He usually always introduces the instrument, and does not that edit that out on his videos. So I think thats a unique legacy that i've noticed. So thank you and congratulations for it. That's very important. Just as much or more than being the amazing artist you are. But talking about the artistic and music itself I think none are better or worse, all have something different to add :)

Damn, that second instrument has a fuller and more pronounced sound than any of the Swiss hangs I've heard in many, many years. I just kind of was listening to this talk as an ambient noise and all the sudden he started playing and I was like, "Woah.. WOAH!" Amazing. It got my attention.
