  • Thames had been off-air all week because of the ATTC technicians walking out again over the new shift patterns linked to the introduction of new technologies. Luckily, LWT didn't get saddled with the industrial strikes that plagued Thames Television for the whole week.

    I remember being on holiday in 1984 at a campsite in Hampshire, the TV aerial on our caravan was using Crystal Palace for the signal & all we got was this, after a couple of days of no ITV, the campsite owner had all caravan aerials changed over for reception of TVS from Hannington, which went down very well with all the campsite holidaymakers as the main office was getting fed up of constant complaints of no ITV!

    Here in the South Southern Television had a seven week strike in 1977 which was a forerunner to the I.T.V. Network strike of 1979.

      Not as bad as the summer of 1979, no ITV at all for weeks.

      @@rtc9063 Thames management saw this, and this is the reason why they brought in an emergency strike schedule for Thames in October 1984. Monday 22nd October 1984 until Friday 2nd November 1984 was the period of the emergency schedules airing on Thames.

      @@johnking5174 it’s no wonder Thatcher crushed the power of the unions. That strike in 1979 and the pay rise they got was far more than they ever asked for in the first place.

    This is the only time I agree to a unified ITV. How ridiculous no programmes from Thames and then comes LWT making sure everyone knew their programmes weren't going off the air.

      @@andymerrett it was to do with the advertising market being big enough in London to sustain two companies. Originally ABC Television held the weekend contract for the North and Midlands with Granada and ATV doing the weekdays in those areas. This arrangement lasted about 10 years.

      Well there *was* the 1979 strike... All except Channel TV. One thing that has surprised me is that London never got more than one full-time independent TV channel just for London until digital switchover and even now "London Live" isn't exactly a household name.

    I love how they take great pains to point out the weekend schedule is as advertised. But what a bizarre situation that TV-AM and LWT could get to air and Thames couldn't.
    Were there any scenarios where certain episodes of a network series went out in Thames time and others in LWT time, and if so how was this addressed - such as 2 part dramas starting on Sunday night and concluding on Monday night?

    • @johnking5174

      Hi James, ITV network was very different back then. It was 99% of the time that Thames Television shows always aired Mondays to Friday early evenings and never aired during LWT franchise time. For example, the epic 1988 Jack the Ripper drama produced by Thames Television's film company Euston Films was a 2 parter and aired Tuesday 11th October and Tuesday 18th October 1988. So, it was rare to see any Thames Television big shows on at weekends.

      The reason why LWT and TV-am were on air was that they didn't have an industrial dispute with the unions, only Thames had. In fact this 1984 strike only affected Thames Television. This led at first to no ITV schedules apart from TV-am and LWT airing in London, until Thames adopted an emergency schedule from October 1984 run by the management.

      @KStarCLG LWT only missed out on the Thames Weekend News on a Friday evening. That 15 minute bulletin would simply be scrapped during this period of industrial action. LWT did provide short London News Headlines over the weekend at this time, read out by the continuity announcer. So, LWT would have produced a short 5 minute London News Headlines for Friday evening as a short term substitute.

  • @christopherwilliams2093

    So how were LWT able to have a local news bulletin at 6pm that evening if Thames were unable to put out the Thames Weekend News bulletin on LWT?

    • @CaptainSiCo
      @CaptainSiCo 3 роки тому +7

      I imagine it was a “rip and read” presented by the LWT announcer, similar to their weekend news bulletins in that era.

      During an edition of 'The 6 o'clock Show", during the second Thames dispute, instead of Thames Weekend News, Michael Aspel introduced a Police 5 special.

    • @johnking5174
      @johnking5174 2 роки тому +2

      LWT had already been producing the "London News Headlines" for a Saturday and Sunday, which was literally the continuity announcer reading the latest London news headlines provided by wire agencies and LBC News.

    This is odd of course really too as others have said as well. No Thames although LWT were on as usual then being of course the other London ITV company as they were then so too. I don't remember this at the time-perhaps we here at the time were not watching it I wonder too?! Whatever, thank you too.

      And as others have said; presumably only then London was affected; with the other ITV areas going on then too as usual I wonder?!

      The industrial dispute affected other ITV regions as they could not screen Thames' produced programmes, or material that originated from Thames.
      It also meant there were no advertisements on Channel 4 in some areas. Not surprisingly, there were no commercials on Channel 4 in the London ITV/C4 area - during Thames' franchise hours - and this was also the case in Northern Ireland during the week, and also fewer at weekends. This was the case around the times of both of these Thames' strikes, and for a period thereafter. I'm sure other regions were also affected to some extent

    • @brucedanton3669
      @brucedanton3669 7 місяців тому +1

      Yes of course you are so right there then too I am sure. As you say, when Thames were on there would have been no commercials shown too. When LWT were on and I guess TV-am in the early hours that would have been different then so too? Channel 4 then relied I guess on the then ITV companies for their commercials so too?@@BelfastGav
