What a great interview. I have a memory of her in the day. Thanks for this. Hey..I thought I recognized that drawing! I could hear her all night. What a doll of a gal. I was immersed in my brothers record collection when he would happened to leave the house. He would have killed me. My best childhood memories….sad(maybe?) but true.
In 1976 when I was 18 years old, my friend Tony Shanahan (long-term bass player for Patti Smith) turned us (the 2 sisters we were dating and myself) on to an evening at the 82 Club in Gotham to see Cherry Vanilla and her Staten Island band. We were totally blown away, that was one truly amazing show indeed! The best songs going and her vocals and stage presence were stunning! By the time I was 20 years old, I had founded a punk band named "THE THE" (not Matt Johnson's band of the same name that succeeded us) that got signed to a 5-year management contract with Jane Friedman's company, THE WARTOKE CONCERN. In 1978/79 we experienced major touring with JOHN CALE/NICO, and THE POLICE as the opening act in America and Canada plus played in all of Gotham's hottest venues opening for all the stars of that era. It was a wild ride with many crazy stories! It all began with seeing Cherry and being influenced by the awesome show I mentioned above. We included her name in the thank-you credits of this Hub City Classic music video that celebrates the remastered, reissued version of my 1982 purple vinyl single as a solo artist: ua-cam.com/video/dldNpUbs8zo/v-deo.htmlsi=LB-EwOMCbnmEzfr1
Loved Cherry's first album. Raunchy as fuck. The second looks like someone got to her and steered her in the wrong direction. Every boy's fantasy she was.
