I just thought of another thing we can do as artists to help us to talk about or art... When I was a art student . I attended lectures and watched other artists talk about their art. Maybe by watching others do it we can learn how they do it. And formulate our own art talking points.👩🎨
This was super valuable, thanks you two! The only thing I could add is more of an extension of what Klee said about people appreciating the humanity of a person. I've learned to embrace my goofs; If I can't get a sentence out without flubs, I'll pause, pull a face, and say, "Man...words are hard today!" and laugh it off...nearly always get a response like, "Oh, tell me about it!". Things that might have been embarrassing in a certain head space can be ice breakers if you can change your attitude about them. :)
It's good to know that I'm not the only one that has made art just because, sometimes I create just because I like the pose of the figure I'm using for reference, sometimes it has no deeper meaning, your videos and podcast are always so honest and sincere a lot of us appreciate that
So, you had an idea, a thought came to you, an inspiration. It blossomed in your brain. Your mind & creativity encouraged you to experiment with this particular medium (or these particular media) which delighted you as the creation expanded. Some Artists blurbs I've read and thought...what did that actually mean? 🤔 It's reassuring to know too that if I have absolutely no idea where the inspiration for an artwork came from and I'm still processing that, it's OK to say that. It's the not knowing what to say for fear of not sounding like a 'proper' artist that is paralysing and inhibiting. I've decided to take the next 3 months to explore all that and take away the shoulds and musts around why I paint. Looking forward to the next episode guys xx
As a fellow awkward introvert, part of me really resents having had to take almost all “bottom rung” customer service roles since I left college *with a degree in art* for like almost a decade now; but I will say, now that I’m finally starting to find my artistic “feet” in the world, the skills that I had to learn to get by at all in those jobs are going to apply to things like this, engaging with people at shows and so forth
This is really good advice. I sold on commission for nearly 10 years, and this was a good reminder of what works well when dealing with people. They know when they're being bullshitted, they always know...and then they don't buy.

I completely agree with you btw Rafi when you said to be self empowering when talking about your art. Its critical because it shows that your insecureties isn't taking control and you're simply showing moral confident character. You put it very well. I would even add that artists should most certainly differentiate between self empowerment and cockiness/self righteousness. Self righteous artists are harmful to themselves because people don't like see through to their true character. Thanks again for the video!!

I've struggled with the explanation of each piece...but, I'm getting much better at it. I just pick a specific element of what the image or painting is...and build off of that. I try to make it elaborate and vivid like a book. But, not make it too long. A few lines is good enough. Like a snippet of it is good enough. Sort of like catalog ad copy. Super condensed that is unique and original.

This is really sage advice here and it makes perfect sense. I'm not showing yet, but do find times when talking about my art feels awkward. Like I don't want to put on airs or speak with more authority than I actually have, but I am an artist and my work is important to me. It can be somewhat uncomfortable. I do appreciate you both and the value of your channel to me and other artists.
Kelly, I understand your reticence about the possibility you are “putting on airs” or speaking with authority. I had these issues for a Long Time… ( I’m almost 70 now) but I now know that is an incorrect way to think. YOU ARE THE Authority of your own art Period. Never forget that. The awkwardness will pass, especially if you practice talking about your artwork with a supportive friend or write in your journal about questions you have gotten and write some responses.
So I am new at this talk about my art thing. I am trying very hard not to over think conversations I had when I get home. Sometimes I just get so excited to talk about my art with someone, that I feel like I overshare. Also trying to share that I do art and you can see it on line at such a place...but not come off as a sales person. Still feeling out of my element with that. Thanks for the video. It gives me hope that I can get a better handle on all of this.

Love this topic! I will say in my experience as a art lover. I Love art shows but I am always broke. My experience is that lot of people that go to art shows are there to get wine, food, relax, be seen by other people or meet others or just simply enjoy 'visual bingeing' on cool stuff. Don't sweat at every comment, just go with the flow, some people just like to look and comment, they love it but maybe they can't spend the money now and don't want to draw attention to themselves for fear of getting an artists hopes up for a sale. My first time out, 2 chummy women with little handbags on their arms, semi stopped and one said to the other 'someone has watched a lot of pinterest' and glided on by. The second time I wasn't feeling it, was semi-prepared but just enjoyed the day. Now I have one coming up in mid June "IF" and I am already on track to get things completed and ready to go. This video was very insightful--especially for someone (like me) who is a non-visual artist, but really curious about the 'story' and the process that visual artists use to base their work on. When I was younger, I think my approach when asking questions was probably too intrusive. I've learned since then to give the person a little more space and just let them know how the work makes me feel, or even just comment on the colours, shapes, design--anything really that gives an artist some 'wiggle room' to share (comfortably) about their work. Can you give pointers (in a future video) about how to approach artists about their work? This would be greatly appreciated! Love your videos--keep up the good work!
Thank you for making this video. You share an important aspect of been a real artiest. Creators are a speciaal type of people and that gave you enough to talk about IF people are interested. Great that you make clear that nobody likes drama. Valuable information and up to day. You both look amazing. Maybe you could also make a video about how to describe your art. I noticed that sometimes people make also a dramatic story about what they made and if you look at the piece you are confused trying to find what they describe. Thank you again. I like your idea of interviewing yourself .I'll have to keep that in mind after I make a artwork . Make mental notes about it. That will be a good practice for me. Most of are shy when taking to the public about our art. I guess we need serve something better than word salad in 🥗, or mumbo jumbo gumbo when it come to our art.. I'll try to serve up something more than that next time I talk to the public. Short and sweet keep it about the art. If they ask chances are they want to know about your art. And if they walk on, after or during the conversation . Oh well ,🤷♀️ no more need to talk to those guys any more.😁.
Are you collecting those creative sayings? "wallets with legs" is classic :) You could write a book or booklet of Rafi's pearls of wisdom. Don't chase after "wallets with legs
Hi Rafi! There was one point where you agreed that sometimes there is no deeper meaning or thought behind the colors or designs. It just somhow floated on the canvas naturally. But then as an artist, we can't say that it has been created randomly and there is no thought behind it. So, how can we present such an art where is less deeper or less thoughtful. It just got created in a way momentary. An example would be a better way of understanding for me.

I find it difficult to tell people about my art. Mainly because I know everyone has their own interpretation and I don't want to interrupt that but then I freeze up and don't know what to say
Great video! I’m put off when artists make up absurd, pretentious metaphysical bs “meanings” of their work. I love it when artists say what they enjoy about their art and the process of painting or whatever their creativity is. Sometimes I ask people what they think about a piece-what made them stop and look at that one. I make sure I “see” every person as worthy of my attention if they want it. I was trying to buy a nice oil painting of an Italian vineyard but the artist refused to “see” me (jeans, not wealthy enough) and lost a substantial sale at gallery prices.
Damn that's a tough one, especially because I'm already too quick to get into passionate rants about deep topics in general conversations, let alone when I have to discuss art! I've only done one show and I was such a nervous wreck that I just wanted to go hide behind the snack table cause I felt so exposed, but also I can't shut up about what's behind my work if someone seems really interested 😅 The confortable middle ground is going to be a real learning curve for me when I'll be able to show my work to humans again 🙃
Did the person that questioned if it was considered good art, perhaps mean to say fine art? which is art developed primarily for aesthetics or beauty, rather than decorative or applied art. Love the tips & advice👌😁
Thats a shame 😔, I personally don't look at art as either good or bad, rather what does the work say to me or feelings does it evoke. If it does that, then it's for me, if not, then it's meant for someone else. Keep up the great content and spreading your joy & positivity, it's much appreciated.
I still struggle with people who come up to me and ask if I am on drugs when I make art. 😳 Alot of times telling the story is what sells the piece for me. Even if it is a small story like where I was when I made it or what I used or a technique. ❤️ Good tips!
For anyone struggling to engage potential buyers (or anyone in general) i would recommend going to classes on public speaking. There's this one called toastmasters that will teach you how to talk to an audience.

I have the same inclination, if someone likes something I tend to want to give it to them up until now I have mostly worked for my own sanity, but I am retiring and want to figure out how to supplement my income with what I love. that's why I've been watching your videos thank you, you guys are awesome
The few things that is hard is when my partner doesn't understand my art, don't get it and that's ok but doesn't help with support aspect. Or family members saying how much longer you gonna be with this. It interrupts my mo jo as I'm creating art.
"What's your story?" "I was born in a log cabin. The snow was thick and heavy that day. My infant cries, nearly drowned out by the coyotes' howling in the hills..."
I apologize in advance for venting. My husband is throwing me out because my art is too messy. It takes up too much room and I have to find another place to live. I'm recovering from major surgery. I can't do anything. It pisses me off.
I've done estate liquidation in Beverly Hills and Bel Air. Wealthy people come in looking nearly homeless, but leave spending STUPID money. Don't judge the buying public by looks.
'more good' yeah I talk like this all the time lol yep never ever base/judge someone's outward appearance against what they can pay or even who they are, I've met people that dress like slobs but have a lot of money, I met people that dress very posh, who just like nice clothes but dont have a lot of money, personal appearances do not matter when it come to sales or talking to people. lol love the story about your dad and the bartender unless the drama is part of the art, dont bring it up lol

I'd have to get to know you better, to know Good art takes time... What? Don't look at me like that. 😳
not for me, a normal 10 min conversation will turn into 30 minutes. I talk like a person who has a stutters but mine is just a long break between phrases or words. If a person wants me to know the story of my artwork, I need to know first that they are willing to sit through my brain stutters.

This video was very insightful--especially for someone (like me) who is a non-visual artist, but really curious about the 'story' and the process that visual artists use to base their work on. When I was younger, I think my approach when asking questions was probably too intrusive. I've learned since then to give the person a little more space and just let them know how the work makes me feel, or even just comment on the colours, shapes, design--anything really that gives an artist some 'wiggle room' to share (comfortably) about their work. Can you give pointers (in a future video) about how to approach artists about their work? This would be greatly appreciated! Love your videos--keep up the good work!

Thank you for making this video. You share an important aspect of been a real artiest. Creators are a speciaal type of people and that gave you enough to talk about IF people are interested. Great that you make clear that nobody likes drama. Valuable information and up to day. You both look amazing. Maybe you could also make a video about how to describe your art. I noticed that sometimes people make also a dramatic story about what they made and if you look at the piece you are confused trying to find what they describe.

I like your idea of interviewing yourself .I'll have to keep that in mind after I make a artwork . Make mental notes about it. That will be a good practice for me.
Most of are shy when taking to the public about our art. I guess we need serve something better than word salad in 🥗, or mumbo jumbo gumbo when it come to our art.. I'll try to serve up something more than that next time I talk to the public. Short and sweet keep it about the art. If they ask chances are they want to know about your art. And if they walk on, after or during the conversation . Oh well ,🤷♀️ no more need to talk to those guys any more.😁.

There was one point where you agreed that sometimes there is no deeper meaning or thought behind the colors or designs. It just somhow floated on the canvas naturally. But then as an artist, we can't say that it has been created randomly and there is no thought behind it. So, how can we present such an art where is less deeper or less thoughtful. It just got created in a way momentary. An example would be a better way of understanding for me.

I find it difficult to tell people about my art. Mainly because I know everyone has their own interpretation and I don't want to interrupt that but then I freeze up and don't know what to say
Great video! I’m put off when artists make up absurd, pretentious metaphysical bs “meanings” of their work. I love it when artists say what they enjoy about their art and the process of painting or whatever their creativity is. Sometimes I ask people what they think about a piece-what made them stop and look at that one. I make sure I “see” every person as worthy of my attention if they want it. I was trying to buy a nice oil painting of an Italian vineyard but the artist refused to “see” me (jeans, not wealthy enough) and lost a substantial sale at gallery prices.
Damn that's a tough one, especially because I'm already too quick to get into passionate rants about deep topics in general conversations, let alone when I have to discuss art! I've only done one show and I was such a nervous wreck that I just wanted to go hide behind the snack table cause I felt so exposed, but also I can't shut up about what's behind my work if someone seems really interested 😅 The confortable middle ground is going to be a real learning curve for me when I'll be able to show my work to humans again 🙃

Thats a shame 😔, I personally don't look at art as either good or bad, rather what does the work say to me or feelings does it evoke. If it does that, then it's for me, if not, then it's meant for someone else. Keep up the great content and spreading your joy & positivity, it's much appreciated.

I still struggle with people who come up to me and ask if I am on drugs when I make art. 😳 Alot of times telling the story is what sells the piece for me. Even if it is a small story like where I was when I made it or what I used or a technique. ❤️ Good tips!

For anyone struggling to engage potential buyers (or anyone in general) i would recommend going to classes on public speaking. There's this one called toastmasters that will teach you how to talk to an audience.
What I dislike is when people ask questions trying to get all of my "secrets" on how I created something. How do you deal with that?
my problem is when someone really likes my work I tend to bend to to their will so they can own it.
I tend to go cheap in that situation

The few things that is hard is when my partner doesn't understand my art, don't get it and that's ok but doesn't help with support aspect. Or family members saying how much longer you gonna be with this. It interrupts my mo jo as I'm creating art.
My issue is writing about my work. Not just for Galleries, exhibitions but also grants private and Government. Thank you a very good program.

not for me, a normal 10 min conversation will turn into 30 minutes. I talk like a person who has a stutters but mine is just a long break between phrases or words. If a person wants me to know the story of my artwork, I need to know first that they are willing to sit through my brain stutters.
