  • The Mutton Bustin' competition builds character says parents of young competitors. The annual event at the Reno Rodeo puts 5 to 7 year-old kids bareback on a sheep. The child who holds on the tightest and stays on the longest is the winner. Dad of a Mutton Bustin' competitor, Chris Sarman says, "Anytime you get out here and play in the dirt and mud, I think that is good for kids."
Other parents say learning the value of hard work and potentially losing is a great thing for kids.
"I think competing is essential for kids these days, especially with the transition of being in front of devices so much for instant gratification that our society is falling back on," says mom, Kelsey Bradshaw. "I want to get away from that when I teach my kids that they have to work hard and they have to set goals and they have to be under pressure sometimes because that is what life is all about. You've got to put yourself in situations where you stretch and grow, and you're put on the spot just like with the Mutton Bustin'."
Renown Health is the sponsor of the Mutton Bustin' competition.
