60 years later this superb film is more relevant today than it ever was
I'm 51 years old and touted this movie for 20 years. And no one gets it. I think it may hit harder today than it ever did.
Because everyone's psychopathic..and yeah
We've all worked with them gone to school with them ated /married them etc.
Even multiplied
Oy
I'm not just an entertainer.
I'm an influencer, a wielder of opinion.
A force.
the exact quote was 'a welder of iron'
Try watching this trailor while watching the andy griffith show... shows how good of an actor andy was.
In the scene where they are gathered in screening room, Rhodes talks about the potential candidate
"not having any sizzle." He talks about him being an "influencer" something that is common today with social media circles.
What a film. Andy Griffith was such a prolific actor and he nailed this character. He should have won a Oscar for this film. I give it 5 STARS. Patricia, Walter, Tony and Lee were great, too. Great cast.
How Andy did not get a nomination for best actor seems impossible. Great performance.
Because he was new and had no idea he was a natural laid back comedian. They didn't know how well he was "acting".
Right?
Tragic.
Then, Aunt Bea.No.he should have catapulted into the stratosphere of Hollywood.
I mean Andy and Dude were so ..…
The earliest mention of "influencer" I can recall. And that's long before the internet was born.
How old are you? People rising to power and manipulating the masses is as old as time. Adolph Hitler would be an extreme example of this. What does the internet have to do with anything? Pick up a history book my friend. There was life before the internet.
Andy Griffith's best performance ever. I've thought of this movie often in the last four years especially.
I don’t think we’re in Mayberry anymore, Toto.
Just saw this movie with my family. Its super crazy and super relevant. One of the best best dark comedies of all time.
Super relevant because it makes me wonder what does Joe Biden really thinks about black people?
When I think of Andy Griffith I picture him as Andy Taylor on the Andy Griffith show or I think of him as Matlock. This is such a great performance, it could honestly put this above both of those roles, and show what an underrated actor he was. Andy had range. It just seems like he never got a chance to show it off.
Don't feel sorry for him.
He was one of the most successful TV stars of all time.
He controlled The Andy Griffith Show, Andy of Mayberry, and Matlock. I'm certain that he was satisfied in his career and life in general.
@@SylphBeliver I'm sure he was happy with his career too. I never heard he wasn't. But this is a really good movie.
@@heisensaul5538 Yeah, I watched the trailer based on your suggestion. I will watch the movie. Thanks!
@@SylphBeliver cool man. I'm glad you're gonna watch this amazing movie :)
This movie is more relevant now than ever - a must see!!

Yep.
@dreamlandnightmare Despite his outward bluster, he's probably one of the most honest and down to earth politicians seen in a while. Serious.
I will flood the white house with millions of democrats.
@@robertortiz-wilson1588😂😂😂😂 Dump is a conman and you are his mark. I hope the day comes when you will understand that.
One of the best performances given by an actor in my opinion.
I watched this movie for four long years.
In fact, I'm still watching it. But I'm hoping the final credits are getting ready to roll.
Best movie he ever made. I just watched it yesterday. He gives you goosebumps.
clearly you have never seen Weekend At Bernie's :p
What a year for films-1957! this film & SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS were among the best American films of their time. Lean’s BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI took the lion’s shares of awards that year & was a great achievement as well but neither of these other two films received the attention they deserved. After all it was the Eisenhauer era & the darkness of Kazan’s & Mackendrick’s works ran counter to the public’s preference for upbeat escapism. Recovering recently from the Army McCarthy hearings probably also discouraged many from examining & coming to terms with a new demagogue even if only a fictional one like Lonesome Rhodes. Griffith is amazing here. He never had another role to equal this one. Viewing this film now with a REAL & even more dangerous figure on the scene is unsettling in the extreme.
For this to be his first movie and to follow it up the next year with "No time for sergeants" is quite a jump start into show business. Both great performances.
I am a BIG fan of this movie so I realize that scenes in this trailer did not appear in the movie. Thank you for posting this!
Saw it last night...great film...I'd seen it many years ago (I was born in 1957).
Adam the Woo brought me here. I never knew about this movie. Wow, a different role for good ol Andy.
Wow! This film was awesome & way before it's time. A shame it didn't do well at the box office back then.
A movie about youtubers before youtube's creators were even born
This is the comment that I was looking for.
Nope. Lonesome Rhodes wasn’t a modern day tattooed idiot who rose to fame by being an illiterate immature pervert taking a dump in a display toilet at home depot. Lonesome Rhodes was a sociopath, but he at least we presented an image of being a decent down to earth “country boy”. Now people don’t even try and hide the nastiness
Spike Lee listed this as 1 of 3 films we must see today. Interesting I don't think him and Andy Griffith would see eye to eye politically though.
Andy Griffith was a lifelong Democrat so maybe would be differences from different eras but maybe not as far apart as you would think.
@@RobRVA maybe
@@RobRVA democrats from Andy’s era would be conservatives todays society’s standards. He definitely wouldn’t have seen eye to eye with Spike Lee.
@@Suddenlyits1960 Andy was a lifelong Democrat he died in 2012 not in the sixties.
Streets of San Francisco had something like this on with Larry Hagman and near the end, Larry Hagman's character true feelings aired out on the San Francisco radio station as he lost all his callers, and the only caller he did get was from THE BOSS.
he's a Influencer , just shows how you should not trust a person like that.
This movie sums up 70-80% of today's politicians.
I wonder if anyone seeing this in the near future might have a sudden realization about some of those in office. To many, politicians are like the lover who constantly shows their hand, but their significant other is in total denial, because they speak what people want to hear and do enough, just enough to be believed. Then no matter what they say or do they are golden.
It also sums up one particular US politician very well.
@@courtthieleman2196 yep, AOC. nailed it.
You forgot bureaucrats, "entertainment stars," and media group-think types.
Oh I love this movie!
***** And so do you!!! ^__^
Brilliant film!

Now I no where the term HOT MIKE originated
There's a book written by Neil Postman " Amusing ourselves to Death".I wonder whether he watched the movie.
💯 percent must watch
lol I’ve never seen him act like this. Kind of a new perspective when watching the Andy Griffith show
Adam The Woo sent me here!!!
Who the hell is Adam the “woo” and what exactly is a “woo”? You have to laugh at this infantile new society we live in. Adults talking like babies.
I need to see this film so bad but can’t find it anywhere same with The Godfather films
He was like her Frankenstein monster
See kids? Your parents and their grandparents WERE alive and thinking.
Wow I never seen him this way
And to think I actually thought Mick Jagger had the most creepiest facial expressions onstage ever??? Oh man! Andy sure tops the cake here!
Anyone know where I can find a recording of the score (the song from beginning of vid)
Wow.
That's a good movie.
In 2009 the Tearful Glenn Beck was compared to this character as a cult of personality.
He's probably not as big as he was then, but certainly never HAS to work another day in his life .
But he didn't have the same end result as the movie did.
The trailer would've been more frightening without the over the top narration and music, but that was the style of the day.
In related news, Tucker "Tuckyo Rose" Carlson was fired from Fox "News" today.
he left mayberry
This is before Mayberry.
More truth to this movie than you can realize.Discloses how the higher powers operate to get elected and will try the craziest things just to get votes.Very interesting and funny except for the end but great acting,These mega church preachers could get pointers from this one.lolololOLOLHOoHA
This was my father's favorite movie, I think. Andy Griffith could probably have played a 10-times serial killer, and he would have ended up just where he was, a big, popular star.
Like the Natural Born Killer movie they did with whatstheirnames
Great job I know him and her
This guy looks and sounds familiar.
This movie is so funny
Is that Kate Bosworth's grandma at 0:39? Lol
Thats donna read man; from THE DONNA READ SHOW. MILF NO DOUBT

Forward thinking film! Never seen Andy Griffith like this!
So this was before he got his own show & matlock
Yup, it’s arguably the best performance of his career.
He was on the Andy Griffen Show too.
Larry wasn't the villain of the picture. He was corrupted by the corporate owners of the USA.
But he was already rotten. He fooled around with women while he was married.
They amplified what was already there.
@@Madbandit77 He wasn't exactly an upstanding citizen but I still wouldn't call him a villain. I think the people who mentored him were far worse.
@@ricardocantoral7672 True. General Haynesworth and his ilk let Larry loose, but they had something of a moral boundary, despite it being artificial.
@@Madbandit77 Those men are all psychopaths with Napoleonic power complexes.

And making the object.of their annihilation as psycho as they are (or worse)
Griffith deserved an Oscar for this performance but everybody knew he was only playing himself. Too bad the movie didn't end with him encouraging a mob to overthrow the Capitol building and the insanity that ensued, but come on that would never happen ?
04-25-20fri/mon🐰🎸🇺🇸🎤🐰. *COOL MOVIE PREMISE*
Why have I never heard of this movie till now? Probably because it would rival, and possibly "kill" his Andy Griffith persona that became a phenomoenon on TV in 1960, just two years after this came out?
I just ran across this movie on Tubi. No fancy advertising, no fancy poster, no fancy words to describe it. Just simple and plain. Plain enough you'd pass on it because it doesn't look interesting. I just happened to see Andys name on the credits, and thought I'd give it a watch since I've never heard of this movie.
This is entirely the opposite of what Andy Griffith (the character on the show) was and what he stood for. I can see why this movie was muzzled. To bad it never resurfaced as a great work of the cinema after Griffiths death.
From what I've read over the years, the REAL Andy Griffith was more like Lonesome Roads than he was his famous alter ego, the "Andy Griffith" from Mayberry.
I thought the film film was dope, except for the part where he harassed the black staff, called them all monkeys in suits, told them they disgusted him and kicked them out. That was not dope.
That scene was meant to display how desperate and rotten he truly was.
Way over the top characterization.
Not really. Have you seen how a lot of celebs and politicians are? This seems quite normal for them.
Mayberry, bar the door.
The Simpsons
A movie about Logan Paul
Except Rhodes is actually talented
💀
This movie predicts Michael Moore and people like him long before they existed. Grimly prophetic!
+Kyle Simmons
And, the worst part of all is Andy Griffith w/out the "comic hillbilly mask", which shows him for the psycho he really was. Maybe it's the best thing for
performers (of all types) never to let the public "behind the curtain"...
E.L.S. Um, I don't see young girls fawning over fat Michael Moore.
it telling the story of demagogue using media. there have always been people like this media just gave them more out reach.
I give this troll a B-. Nice try but a little too obvious.
Mozart? Shubert? Beethoven???? Ask Nordlinger....
Andy Griffith in the role of Larry 'Lonesome' Rhodes is the poster boy for "overacting."
Have you actually seen the movie?
@@ninja_tony *"Have you actually seen the movie?"* Yes I have. Thank you for asking.
@@IsaacNussbaum it fits the character.
@@MeadeSkeltonMusic Evidently the director thought the same thing. Thank you for writing.
He was loud, obnoxious, psychopath. Griffith played it beautifully.
The character is loosely based on Arthur Godfrey. It works on both sides of the political spectrum, and I'm tired of the comments from people with TDS.
Sweetheart, this film is a prophetic nightmare.
That comment in attributed to Elia Kazan, however Budd Schulberg the author of the short story from 1953 that later was reworked into the screenplay for this film from
1957 has stated that the character was inspired by his association with Will Rogers, and lonesome was based on him.
How over rated was this film?
This was the real Andy. Not the one on Mayberry
To be honest, I think the Andy we saw in the color episodes of the show was the real Andy.

No Color? 🙄
A bit lightweight in its story, for me. Andy Griffith is bloody irritating! The film picks up but Elia Kazan directed far better films than this.
That’s an entirely subjective statement. Elia Kazan stated he felt this film was one of his best ever and was sorely disappointed that it wasn’t well received when it was new. I love this film and feel it’s definetly one of his finest efforts and Andy’s performance was nothing short of fantastic. His character isn’t supposed to be likeable. I’ve watched this film many, many times. It has an amazing soundtrack too.
@@Suddenlyits1960 - I know he's not meant to be sympathetic and he still irks me.
