When I think of Andy Griffith I picture him as Andy Taylor on the Andy Griffith show or I think of him as Matlock. This is such a great performance, it could honestly put this above both of those roles, and show what an underrated actor he was. Andy had range. It just seems like he never got a chance to show it off.

What a year for films-1957! this film & SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS were among the best American films of their time. Lean’s BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI took the lion’s shares of awards that year & was a great achievement as well but neither of these other two films received the attention they deserved. After all it was the Eisenhauer era & the darkness of Kazan’s & Mackendrick’s works ran counter to the public’s preference for upbeat escapism. Recovering recently from the Army McCarthy hearings probably also discouraged many from examining & coming to terms with a new demagogue even if only a fictional one like Lonesome Rhodes. Griffith is amazing here. He never had another role to equal this one. Viewing this film now with a REAL & even more dangerous figure on the scene is unsettling in the extreme.

Why have I never heard of this movie till now? Probably because it would rival, and possibly "kill" his Andy Griffith persona that became a phenomoenon on TV in 1960, just two years after this came out?
I just ran across this movie on Tubi. No fancy advertising, no fancy poster, no fancy words to describe it. Just simple and plain. Plain enough you'd pass on it because it doesn't look interesting. I just happened to see Andys name on the credits, and thought I'd give it a watch since I've never heard of this movie.
This is entirely the opposite of what Andy Griffith (the character on the show) was and what he stood for. I can see why this movie was muzzled. To bad it never resurfaced as a great work of the cinema after Griffiths death.
From what I've read over the years, the REAL Andy Griffith was more like Lonesome Roads than he was his famous alter ego, the "Andy Griffith" from Mayberry.

This was the real Andy. Not the one on Mayberry

To be honest, I think the Andy we saw in the color episodes of the show was the real Andy.

@@gregcrane4953 The Democrats are really on the verge of being exposed. They have been manipulating the public for a very long time and I believe that they are done as a political entity. The Bible is true. Your lies will find you out. The Bible says we must pray for our enemies and that includes some Republicans who are secret democrats posing as republicans. I think they're the worst. Wolves in sheep clothing but GOD knows who you are...that's consolation for now. See you at President Trump's Inauguration!💛

A bit lightweight in its story, for me. Andy Griffith is bloody irritating! The film picks up but Elia Kazan directed far better films than this.

That’s an entirely subjective statement. Elia Kazan stated he felt this film was one of his best ever and was sorely disappointed that it wasn’t well received when it was new. I love this film and feel it’s definetly one of his finest efforts and Andy’s performance was nothing short of fantastic. His character isn’t supposed to be likeable. I’ve watched this film many, many times. It has an amazing soundtrack too.

I dislike this movie intensely it’s so annoying I don’t like him playing parts like this and I don’t think any actor should pay play a part like this…. What I mean by disliking intensely it’s loud obnoxious yelling and screaming and it just does not appeal to me and it just was annoying
