Groomer here - when she reacts, don’t turn the dryer off! She will learn that when she reacts, the scary thing goes away, and she will react more next time. Just take it slow like you’re doing (taking the nozzle off makes it less scary) but don’t turn it off! You’re doing great, and thank you on behalf of your future groomer for putting the work into getting her used to the process! 😊
The first bath is always so intimidating with a doodle!! Here are some things and products that really help me -earthbath is by far the best shampoo for this coat type that I’ve found -the blow dry process can be shorter if you let them air dry for 20 min prior -you can try a happy hoodie for her ears when blow drying. A lot of dogs are really sensitive to a loud sound that close to their ears. Plus it will help the drying process! My groomer uses one and I also use it at home -a shorter cut will drastically help with grooming all around. Easier to brush, less matting, faster drying. When you go to the groomer, ask for a summer cut!
Oh! And! There are lots of really helpful doodle specific grooming Facebook groups that have tons of great tips and info to make bathing easier on everyone 🥰
I used to be a groomer and I just wanted to give you guys a heads up that Burts Bees dog shampoos have been known to be problematic and have been recalled a few times for growing mold and on occasion have made dogs sick. I’ve done a lot of research on good alternatives to use and found that the Hempz brand is really great (it also smells amazing). Just from one dog parent to another just because the stuff I’ve heard about Burts Bees products have made me a little nervous so I just avoid it all together.
Thanks! It was so difficult finding something with a totally good review! People seem to have so many mixed experiences with pet products and it’s so stressful trying to find the “right one.” I’ll check out the Hempz brand!
Just a heads up! I wouldn’t recommend brushing your dogs fur or coat while it is wet. It can cause matting and can pull fur out. I would brush her before the bath to get all of the loose fur and dirt up. I love your guys’s family so much! Great job on everything you are doing to train rue!! she is such a good girl.
My hint when washing dogs. Brush first, then wet the body. Use a good quality dog shampoo.. I wash the body first because as soon as the head or ears are wet, they will shake. Rinse thoroughly. Towel dry and then use the dryer.
i can’t express how much i *love* that chris and jessica have the mindset of “i can always learn more, i can always do better” instead of “i’m the parent, i’m always right, i know everything”. growing up with that kind of narcissism sucks and i’m so glad their kids don’t have to deal with that
I rescued a 9 month old collie Cross who'd been returned 4 times because no one had the patience to train him 😡 (people seem to think puppies will be sweet angels without any hard work). So we had to start from scratch and do all the puppy training with him. He would get REALLY ratty when he was tired because no one ever taught him how to be calm and that he was allowed to calm down. So he just went over threshold. We called it 'his bucket has overflowed'. And it took a lot of hard work and patience to teach him he could be calm and he could settle when he was tired. He's 3 now and my sweet boy. He just needed patience and understanding as he's such a high energy intelligent breed! I'm so so pleased to see you guys being so patient with rue and so understanding when she's over the threshold at times and needs time out to calm down. It's typical puppy 'tantrums'. But you're setting her up for success by being so patient and allowing her to rest.
I live in Michigan and during the hotter summer days we would hose our dogs off in the yard to keep them cool. The dog would then go crazy and run/roll all over the place to dry off, we loved it as kids. It was always super chaotic and fun, but also messy! There was a huge wet/muddy dog running around and trying to rub his filthy body over everything to dry off. Baths inside were just as chaotic, but not muddy. The dog would zoom around, rolling on the carpet and couches, getting damp hair EVERYWHERE! Honestly though, I loved it lol I can see how being the adult during all of that was less amusing. I never really had to clean up too much after all of that, and would probably be less likely to let it happen very often now. It is part of being a dog owner, and sometimes you just have to embrace the messy chaos and make the best of it. Enjoy the things that you can, and focus on doing what is best for your dog!
Good first job...it's a task. I take my time when bathing my dogs. One truly enjoyed it. My other one is scared. Great job. She's beautiful and will be a huge asset for Luke.
I had a dog with a similar coat to Rue, my recommendation is brush first, then leave the brush alone. Just put on shampoo and lather like you would with your own hair, then rinse. You're gonna want to turn up the water pressure as well and it won't take as long. Then towel dry, then blow dry. After she's dry, THEN use the brush.
The patience you all have during your dog training is phenomenal! I love this content, I am no expert dog person, I have my own dog who is well trained for me and my life, but omg watching you guys is so amazing! Great attitude and all this 30-min training bits as a puppy equates to hours as an adult dog. You all are doing AMAZING. Don’t let anyone stop you. No one knows everything and we are all learning at all times
If you have a walk in shower with a door it is much easier to bathe them. You will need a removeable shower head. Outdoors is fine in the summer but wont be as enjoyable in the winter. You guys are doing such a great job with her.
Rue is such a sweetheart! For the dryer noise, try out a Happy Hoodie. You can buy them on Amazon. They’re a terrycloth snood that helps to deaden the sound and soak up the water on their head/neck, which is often the hardest part of the dog to dry because of the noise. My poodles are always so much more comfortable with it on!
Some thoughts on beach/lake: The beach is my goldendoodle’s favorite place in the world and we go a lot. The adult coat is much easier to manage than the puppy coat. We brush her out when we leave, and she gets a bath when we get home. We keep her cut pretty short in the summer.
Just hearing about all the efforts your making, makes my heart melt...people underestimate the importance of grooming and even though you feel like you don't know what your doing, you are trying and your trying to learn and that's so awesome!
You will LOVE having a groomer. It's wonderful. Our little Shitzu would come home with bows in her hair and her toe nails painted. She was always so happy.
I’m still so confused as to who is down voting this family’s videos…they are the most wholesome, loving, and calming family…I love watching them and their journey ♥️
Your doing great! Your patience and praise for her is delightful to see. She will be a pro soon as you both will be. Keep up the great training. It takes time. I went through the same with my sons special needs lab. She's a beauty!!
Dog baths are MESSY!!! 😂🤣😂 That’s the most important thing to remember. You’re gonna get wet and soapy because they’re gonna shake it off multiple times through the process. Have fun with it and learn as you go ♥️
Great training on your first bath with her. Definitely trying to make it a positive experience you guys are doing great! As a groomer myself I do recommend getting her to see a professional soon to get used to that environment as well as I believe in a previous video you said she was 17 weeks or so. Grooming doesn’t always come naturally and it takes practice for the pup to get used to sounds smells, and trusting someone to take clippers and scissors to her. When rinsing during the bath, if she feels sud free and when you graze your hands through her fur if there is a squeak sound from the friction between your fingers and the hair she is clean and rinsed out. I also reccomend using a conditioner or even I spray leave in conditioner during brushing to help with the coat during brush out to prevent matting. During blow drying you could get a happy hoodie off Amazon; we use them in the salon and they block out the noise of the dryer and are made of terry cloth material so help dry a bit as well. make sure to brush out with slicker brush all over then go through the coat with a fine tooth comb as the comb gets to the roots. If the comb doesn’t snag miss Rue is tangle free. Again you guys are doing fantastic Miss Rue looks like she is the luckiest pup in the world to be with a wonderful family like you!! 😊😊💕
Please please please, make sure to get some dog ear cleaner & wash & dry out her ears. (They have one called vets best, nature's health care) and it comes with both a wash & a dry. So u can wash the ears then dry then out). Poodles/doodles are famous for ear infections bc of the inner ear fur holds water & moisture. & Bc there ears are floppy there's no way for it to become fully clean. So anytime she gets wet, you'll want to make sure & a minimum to dry out her ears with ear dry. But I'd also wash them at least every week to prevent ear infections. Plus anytime she's wet for any reason. Rain, water, anything. U just take cotton pads, put the ear cleaner in the ear, move her ear around to get it in, then take a cotton pad, gently wipe out the ear gunk/ear cleaner, then take a cue tip to get the courners/edges of the ear that u couldn't get, u don't want to shove this in her ear, but u can go towards the back to get anything u couldn't do with a cotton pad, then u want to take ear dry, put it in the ear, and just rub it around. The ear dry starts as a cream but turns into a powder to dry. U can do this if they don't need a cleaning, but her ears got wet. U just want to use a pea amount. If u can't find vets best, there's also well & good. It's a good brand as well but u need to bye the ear cleaner & the ear dry separate.
If yall keep running the dryer around her and putting it over her fur like once a day it would for sure make a difference! Practice makes perfect of course! 😁 Rue is the cutest!
I use a “Wet Brush” for dogs & it works really well for my curly coated dog. It doesn’t tug as much as a comb or pin brush. You guys did a great job for the first time & Rue has such a nice temperament. ❤️
Notes and thoughts from a former groomer as we go along: 1. Brush before the bath! Any knots, tangles, or matting that is on them will be a lot worse after being wet. 2. If she goes to shake and you don’t want her to, a gentle touch behind her head will usually stop them (for a minute anyway lol) or avoiding the ears with the water until later on 3. I really like the Chi shampoo and conditioner for these floofy guys:3 It makes them soooo soft and the conditioner helps work through tangles if there are any. 4. The dryer. You guys did a great job in getting a dryer specifically for her :) Wrapping a towel or a t-shirt around her head (just covering her ears) will help. She will be able to see everything, but it won’t sound quite as scary! 5. Your patience with her is amazing! The dryer will be quicker and will take less time as she adjusts! I love how you’re handling her and her training. You’re doing a great job guys. ❤️
When you can get her groomed, I would highly recommend having her hair trimmed pretty short. We have a miniature golden doodle, and in the summer, he gets a good trim. That way, he can get messy and wet when it is hot out and having him air dry isn’t a concern. He can go to the beach or in his kiddie pool or whatever, and it is a a nonissue. And he is way less hot.
I used to have a standard poodle and the biggest tip I can give with bathing is make sure to avoid getting a lot of water in their ears as they can be very prone to ear infections due to the texture of their fur. Because of this its important to clean their ears out of the bath with a slightly damp cloth and avoiding the inner ear as much as possible during bath time! Its also very good to brush them regularly as they are very prone to getting matting in their fur. Rue is adorable and you guys are such amazing and loving parents to her :), very excited to see how big she gets!
I have a doodle. She have no problem just air drying. We spend a lot of time at my cabin. Far oute in the woods, no power or running water. I keep her fur pretti short doe, and take care of her eares. And always make shure she is brusht oute propely. She goes in and oute of water all summer, spring, fall, no problem.
You’re doing amazing!! And I love how most people in the comments are just respectfully giving their tips and feedback! Must be great for you guys to have this community of people being able to help you improve in a respectful manner! Keep it up, Rue is very lucky to have you guys! ❤️❤️
Hey guys! I’m 20 years old and throughout middle and high school, I worked/ trained many service puppy’s with my family for America’s Vet Dogs. I happened to notice when Chris get was in the pool with Rue, he told her to sit then rewarded her but she stood up before she ate the treat. I would recommend making sure that she is fully sitting before rewarding her so she doesn’t think that the reward was getting up or something like that! I am also not a certified trained but this is just my recommendation from my experience! You guys look like you are doing an amazing job other than that!
I know it seems flip flopped, but if you brush them really thoroughly before the bath, they dry so much faster and are easier to “groom” after the bath. I have two dogs with very similar hair types and this has saved me soooo much time in the long run!
They are training her to be a service dog. That requires a lot more work and training than just owning a dog. If they want it to go well, it takes a lot of work. It’s not the same as having a pet.
@@Kaichannel612 with all due respect a training a service dog is not something you get into as first time puppy parents. Puppies are hand selected by skilled trainers as puppies. Some dogs just aren’t cut out to be a service dog. Normally you only get to own service dogs as 1-4 year old dogs as that’s how long it takes for them to be trained. I doubt Rue will actually get to be an official service dog.
@tams mac They can try their best and still be okay with not succeeding. But I think that is why they are doing so much more training than most people do when they get a puppy. Their HOPE is, she will be able to be Luke’s service dog. They also have said, they know it’s not always a guaranteed outcome and they are okay with that too. Either way, they are doing a great job with training and desensitizing her to things!
I can't believe how big she's getting! Christopher, watch your timing on the "yes" marker cue. Remember, behavior, yes, reward. You guys are rocking it!
I just wanted to say that as someone who has had two dogs from when they were puppies, you're both doing such an amazing job of researching everything and trying your best with it all!!! Puppies can be a LOT and y'all are rockin' it!
You are doing such a great job with Roo! I love how much research you have put into everything and are being amazing and responsible pet owners! More people need to be this proactive before becoming pet owners for the betterment of the pet and yourself. 😊
naybe giving her somthing to distract her during the blow dry process, my advice is maybe some peanut butter on a likimat attached to a wall or something? You're doing amazing!!
@@bottombagfrenchfry7127 as long as you get the right one and don’t use it in large amounts I think it’s fine, however if not there’s other options too :)
Zoomies are when a dog is extremely happy, they are very content with their people. I think it’s good for to have the zoomies outside but without nipping. Since she is nipping still and a puppy it’s good that you are putting her in a crate.
A trick our dog trainer taught us was to mix their shampoo with water in a pitcher. Then you pour it over them as you wash them. This allows them to get cleaned but you’re not stuck trying to get out all the suds that occur when you just squirt the shampoo directly on them. It’s been a game changer and then they’re not super soaked because you didn’t spend what feels like hours getting the soap out with all that water. Good luck!
I used to groom dogs. Get a happy Hoodie, it helps the noise in their ears and really calms them down. Also if that is a velocity drier I’d remove the nozzle and only turn on one of the engines to keep the noise and force of the air minimal the first time or two.
We got a f1b goldendoodle on April 4th and so we are about a month ahead of you guys and it is weird to see you take care of her because it’s like watching a video of our dog in the past
I'm so impressed by so many things you guys are doing for Ru but as a dog trainer something I really recommend to all the owners I have worked with is to remember to keep that lead nice and loose especially when we're exposing pup to new and potential scary things. If at all possible let the dog have the freedom to be off lead and choose the speed at which they approach and interact but keep that lead loose if not. Try and ensure the lead has a curve to it from pups collar to your hand then it's a smiley happy lead :)
Something that really helps me with grooming training is using a grooming table! The elevated platform is more comfortable for me since I’m not bending over, and it reduces the amount of movement the dog can do. I started training my dogs to be calm on the grooming table by feeding their meals on it so it’s a positive place to be. You’re doing GREAT as first time dog owners! The dryer is going to be your best friend once you and Rue both get used to it :)
Did I learn- “when in doubt, chug it out”from this channel? And “I can do hard things”... ??? I tell people Ballinger Family all the time and I started thinking, what if I’m mixed up??? Lol... I was watching A LOT of families!!! Lol!!! Luke looks soooo healthy and happy!!!! I haven’t even started the video hardly, 😂😂😂🥰🥰😂😂😂😂
Hello! I'm a dog groomer I just wanted to say, thank you for starting early with desensitizing her with the dryer! You guys are doing an amazing job! I have never seen a family so dedicated with training and raising their puppy, It's so great to see. ☺️ I have a few helpful tips! Dryers are so loud and scary, Rue might benefit with a happy hoodie! It will protect her ears and also helps with drying them! And I think I saw someone comment below, Burt's bees shampoo has had a lot of recalls. I love Earthbath and Hempz shampoo. I use those brands on all the dogs I groom, they work really well and smell amazing!
When you are ready for a groomer I fully recommend the mobile groomers who bring their van to your house, you can be in the van if you want or you are just near to their comfort zone. I took my pup to a groomer and it was mildly traumatic for both of us. So I tried a Mobil groomer and it was so easy and both of us had no problems
An idea for drying would be an drying brush on Amazon. They are perfect, because if the dog is used to brushing it makes it easier to get them used to the blowdryer. Also the happy hoodie is another good solution. For first time puppy owners y'all are doing great at training Rue. My biggest thing is to remember to do what feels right for your dog. Like kids each dog is different
there's something I use called a dog happy cap or happy hoodie, it's a material scarf-type thing that goes over their ears when they're being dried, it's made a HUGE different for my dog, who gets very nervous with the blow dryer sound. Maybe that could be something to help Rue too!
A grooming table ( there are some affordable options) might be a great thing to start training her on and use as a safe place to blow dry her. She will eventually learn that’s what that place it for and get used to it.
maybe you can get one of those little doggy headbands to help with the blow dryer! It's commonly used in dog salons, it basically covers their ears so the sound isn't as loud and scary to the dogs. Maybe a (temporary) idea for Rue so she can get fully dried without the whole experience being too much for now.
A little tip from the Netherlands so excuse me for text mistakes. If you use a hand plant spray with pomp, put a bit soap in it and water, you pomp or shake it then the shampoo more spreads over the hole dog. I have an Australien labradoodle. And with drying i use an towel round de head/ ears. You can buy an special hoody for that but towel works perfect
A tip that I have found that helps a little for my dogs when they're getting dried is to start at the tail end, it can be a less threatening start than starting towards her head end, the loud sound of the dryer and it being kind of a strange thing to dog/puppy and they could possibly see it at a threat to them and cause them to react. Starting from the tail end keeps the dryer farther from the face at first and not going directly towards the face like a threat would, so some dogs do better that way because they realize the dryer isn't a danger to them and that they are safe and gets used to the feeling and sound. I'm not sure if it'll help her out any or not but thought you could maybe find it helpful to her.
As a poodle owner, when I was first bathing my first poodle, as a puppy they are easy, they coat is easy, drying as a puppy is not super important, but acclimating is Important. As she gets older you want to brush the coat because the coat will change in some way. I have never had a doodle but speaking from a poodle view this is what I recommend. Most owners will keep the coat shorter. The other thing is that as she gets older the baths will bring more chance of matting if there is more coat. The groomer is great, as they can keep the coat not matted. When drying, brush and drying is great as well as using a live in conditioner.
Chris (don't know how to spell fully as my brother's name is misspelled) but he has said that he's bff with him. It's a little different depending on the situation from what I've seen.
I saw in your dog product video that you already have a lick mat for Rue. If you fill that and let her lick it while you’re bathing her it should distract her from the washing and drying. That works for my dog! You guys did great for your first time washing a dog!
I have a Newfoundland and I actually use a horse griming kit I got off Amazon called Weaver Leather eZall Complete Starter Bath Kit helps bath time go quicker and uses less soap. I gave my dog frequent baths as a puppy to get him socialized to water(Newfoundland’s are a water rescue breed) and baths. Here’s some tipssss Fully brush your dog before you get them wet because if they do have any mats you’ll make them tighter and you might have to cut them out instead of being able to brush them out. My dryer has different settings yours probably does to to turn down the air pressure to get them used to the dryer before turning it up higher. :) Ps you probably didn’t realize it but at the end of the bath when she was biting the leash and towel don’t give her pets so she doesn’t think you’re rewarding that behavior ;)

I'm spending my birthday watching your videos, thank you for being my chosen family ❣
Duncan and his Christmas pj's, name a better duo.
Me and 1D that’s a better duo. Then Duncan and his Christmas pjs
I think many groomers appreciate owners that acclimate dogs to grooming and the noise and potential stresses of grooming.
You guys are the best parents for rue !!! Good team work 💕
That dog is all floof! I love her!
Jessica ♥️♥️♥️ you are exuding love at such a beautiful level!!! You got a baby before the baby!!! Oh my goodness 😂🤘🥰🥰🥰
The way you care for her is so awesome. Great kid & dog parents ❤️
If yall keep running the dryer around her and putting it over her fur like once a day it would for sure make a difference! Practice makes perfect of course! 😁 Rue is the cutest!
The fact that she bounces back quickly after the scream is a great sign! It’s the kind of thing you want in a service dog.
Rue has already impacted Luke from what I can see. So excited to see more progress with him and the whole family ❤️
I use a “Wet Brush” for dogs & it works really well for my curly coated dog. It doesn’t tug as much as a comb or pin brush.
You guys did a great job for the first time & Rue has such a nice temperament. ❤️
Notes and thoughts from a former groomer as we go along:
1. Brush before the bath! Any knots, tangles, or matting that is on them will be a lot worse after being wet.
2. If she goes to shake and you don’t want her to, a gentle touch behind her head will usually stop them (for a minute anyway lol) or avoiding the ears with the water until later on
Yes get her groomed shorter hair cute much easier.
Giving a dog a bath is such a big to-do! You guys did great and stayed calm! I hope you both rested too! It can be physically exhausting! Love you!
I have a 10 week old golden retriever so I am loving all the puppy content!!
Luke’s smile is everything.
Jessica you and Christopher you are doing such a great job with Rue
You are such good dog owners
The dog is so calm; Roo is cute. Have a relaxing Sunday; love your family so much.
Rue is such a smart beautiful girl! I love her !
I know it seems flip flopped, but if you brush them really thoroughly before the bath, they dry so much faster and are easier to “groom” after the bath. I have two dogs with very similar hair types and this has saved me soooo much time in the long run!
You guys are such good doggy parents ❤️ incredible job at introducing her to everything
It’s hilarious how much over thinking you guys do in relation to dog owning lol so cute and funny
That's probably because they know everything they do will be critiqued 🥴
I cant take Luke’s excited smile 🥺😍😍😍 hes so frickin cute!
Isn’t peanut butter bad for dogs? I’ve heard it’s a choking hazard.
My dog always had the “zoomies” after a bath. We just let her run it out.
Mine too
That was always my favorite part as a kid!
Oh my goodness..... She is a doll baby!😍
Yes always I love your family you’re kids are so cute and bailey and rue are so beautiful
We got a f1b goldendoodle on April 4th and so we are about a month ahead of you guys and it is weird to see you take care of her because it’s like watching a video of our dog in the past
I press the like before it starts… what a sweet family!!!
So cute. Love you guys so much. You are such amazing dog owners. You guys are so sweet kind caring loving and amazing
13.36 Chris’s face when he heard “Now it only takes me an hour instead of of 2 hours to dry the dog!” 😳
Hello! I'm a dog groomer I just wanted to say, thank you for starting early with desensitizing her with the dryer! You guys are doing an amazing job! I have never seen a family so dedicated with training and raising their puppy, It's so great to see. ☺️
I have a few helpful tips!
I have a labradoodle and really recommend the Mane'N Tale shampoo and conditioner. The conditioner makes the coat so soft and so much more manageable.
How is she so giant already! D: she's so amazingly well behaved [aka trained] and enormous I can't believe she's only 18 weeks!!
"basically we have no idea what we are doing"
Oh! Jessica you are so cute ❤️. You're my inspiration 🔥 love you so so soo much
An idea for drying would be an drying brush on Amazon.
Sometimes dogs shake because their shaking off the stress. Rue could be shaking off water or shaking off the stress
Maybe a (temporary) idea for Rue so she can get fully dried without the whole experience being too much for now.
if you look for Happy Hoodie on Amazon you should be able to find some!
I absolutely love Jessica’s laugh!!
Awww luke is getting so big!! He looks very grown up :)
Next time bring out a puzzle toy for the drying. Or peanut butter covered Kong
The blow dryer, I usually get a long beef stick, while my dog eats it I blow dry him. just a tip.
anything to keep the dog distracted!
Fuzzy Doodle! 🤗
Love Rue!
Rue ❤❤❤❤❤, treats and tummy rubs.
luke's smile is so cute literally gives me life 😭
Feels like rue listens to only Jessica 😂😂😂 she is definitely mama's girl
Here’s some tipssss
Fully brush your dog before you get them wet because if they do have any mats you’ll make them tighter and you might have to cut them out instead of being able to brush them out.
My dryer has different settings yours probably does to to turn down the air pressure to get them used to the dryer before turning it up higher. :)
Ps you probably didn’t realize it but at the end of the bath when she was biting the leash and towel don’t give her pets so she doesn’t think you’re rewarding that behavior ;)
