Next to the navy suit, a gray suit is an absolute men's wardrobestaple. Why? Well, it's not just a good business suit but the gray color allows you to pair it with all sorts of shirt colors and ties putting it on top of the versatility scale. Gray, in general, is a fantastic suit color because it comes in many different shades.
First on the list is the most formal shade, the so-called charcoal gray. It's dark enough that you can wear it in most functions where you otherwise would think of a black suit, think of a funeral or attending a play or going to a business event, the charcoal suit will always work.
Next up we'll go one shade lighter, medium gray. A general rule, not just with gray but with all suiting colors is the lighter the shade the less formal it is. So therefore, while a medium gray suit is still appropriate for the office and most other functions mentioned earlier, with the exceptions of funerals, it has a slightly more casual vibe.
Now last but not least, you have the light grey suit. It's even more casual yet it's still a suit, it can be used as a fresco fabric in the summer so it's a light breezy feel and you can wear it with even bolder and more summery colors.
Now that we've covered our suiting grayscale basics, let's start about specific shirt and tie combinations that you can wear so you look your best.
First, let's talk about shirts. The classic staple is the white dress shirt. For a charcoal suit, you probably want something that is very formal and I would suggest to go with a white dress shirt, medium spread collar, no breast pocket, and French cuffs or double cuffs that are worn with cufflinks.
Now, let's quickly talk about a very fashion-forward look which is pairing a gray suit with a black shirt. Now, chances are there are a lot of Instagrammers and influencers trying to tell you that wearing a black shirt is hip and trendy and fashionable but in classic menswear, black dress shirts have never been a viable option. If you want to wear black shirts with a gray suit, go for it but we believe that a lighter shirt color that provides a bit more contrast is always more complimentary to your outfit and look.
Overall, I would suggest you always try to have a shirt that is lighter in color than your suit otherwise it looks a little off.
In terms of ties, a solid navy tie is of course a formal staple paired with a blue shirt and a gray suit but it can be also a little boring. So other than the typical suspects red, green, or plum, you could also experiment with a complementary color of blue which is orange.
Another common shirt color for gray suits is pink. Pastelly pinks can be a great change to the monotony of white and light blue shirts and they work particularly well with gray because there's a subtle contrast yet it warms up that gray color.
If you go with a differently colored shirt, a safe way is always to choose a tie that is darker in the same color family. So if I have a light orange or creamy shirt then maybe an orange tie would work. If there is some green in my shirt, a green tie works.
Which brings us to the next point, shirts don't have to be solids; you can have patterned shirts as well and stripes are the most classic ones. Again, larger stripes are more casual and therefore, better suited with lighter shades of gray. Of course, you can also incorporate check shirts into your outfits, they're a bit more casual than striped ones so they work better with light grey suits.
This is why I love your channel. You talk about the things that other UA-camrs usually don't. It's in depth, visual, entertaining, and you answer the why. You'll have one million subs in no time, Raphael!
Thanks!
Raphael, you are the gatekeeper for elegant classic mens fashion!
I have a charcoal grey suit and this is exactly the video about grey suit I always wanted.
Of all similar channels I enjoy yours the most: the material is deep, well prepared, interesting, and the way you present it is reserved and sophisticated without the unnecessary snobism. Keep it up!
You are one of the most remarkable humans I have ever heard of!
I have recently got my first bespoke suit in grey and I needed this video badly! Thank you!
Once I hated elegant clothing but when I found this channel it changed my life i love classic menswear now and this channel tought me so much, thank you Raphael! 🎩👌✨
Thank you for another excellent and thorough guide! Your videos and articles have completely transformed the way I dress and even improved my life. My wife loves the way I look in gray, and now you've convinced me that I need a gray suit (or two). The versatility is just great. Keep on being a true gentleman and helping us do so as well!
Sir I'm glad that I came across such a gentleman like you. Thankyou for making these videos and sharing the valuable tips. 😊👍👌
You and your friends inspire me a lot.😊
Great video. I admire your green tie!

I'm having a consultation to get my first made to measure suit next week, it will be grey and this is very helpful for me to choose (and budget for) my shirts and accessories. Thanks for so many great informative videos, I'm so excited to get my first proper suit (age 36 - never too late!)
Day 2 of asking the Gentleman's Gazette
to make a video about top hats.
I'm looking forward a bowler hat video myself
Would love to see a series on business and investments. Investments being that of financial assets and options as well as heritage items that can be passed down that grow in value. As a gentleman I think it is key to have knowledge of using money well and using it to your advantage. In a growing world of spending lavishly most people forget the old mindset of living simple yet having your money work for you. Would love to hear your thought on the subject. Blessings.
Now this would be a killer subject and a must watch.
My goal is to learn how to pair patterns and colors as well as Raphael.
In the beginning it might not work out, but just keep trying. Eventually, you get a feel of scale, color and occasion.
@@gentlemansgazette Mine too!
Perfect i just bought a gray suit
I could listen to you for hours on end and not get bored well already did
This was an incredible video. I'm going to go buy a mid grey suit and this answered everything I wanted to know. Now I know exactly what shirts, shoes, and ties to wear with it. Thank you.
I was just thinking about this as I've bought a grey Pal Zileri sartoriale suit from a thrift store and I wanted some advice!

This video could be thirty-five seconds long :D Just kidding, I love your channel, because you always explain topic comprehensively. That's why I watch you, even though I won't be wearing a suit on a daily basis five years from now. But I take care of my style in many other ways, not only by choosing pieces to put on.
I am so addicted to you guys ❤ this channel
Would love a similar video for the different shades of blue suits. Just bought a houndstooth blue suit and I wonder which combinations would work best with it.
Great video as always.
"The more pattern, the more casual" good rule!
Prestons ensemble at 1:58 is perfect!
I have wanted to buy and wear a grey suit, specifically at weddings, since black reminds me of a line of marching ants.
Grey has so many combinations to play with and I like to make my work my play. Fantastic video!
Black sucks.
The grey suit with a green tie is one of my favorite combinations.
this is exactly what i need, you are a lifesaver right now.
I may be a bit late, but this video is one of your best ones yet.
I wear pastel pink shirt with my gray suits be it charcoal or light gray and thanks for more gray options
Thank god for you, man

Could you make a video about Safari Jackets? They are quite in trend at the moment.
Please consider making a video about how to pair (dress) shirts with beige and khaki suits or generally how to pair brighter coloured suits. If you apply classic style rules you choose a lighter colour for the dress shirt than the suit jacket or blazer, therefore you end up mostly with white and off white.
What about breaking this rule with brighter suit colours and go for a darker coloured dress shirt, for example a darker grey (but not charcoal) dress shirt with a beige suit jacket in casual situations? Do you think one can pull that off or what are your thoughts on this topic?
Funny that you uploaded this: Me and my fiancee are getting married, and I've been trying to look up suit ideas for mint and gray. Thanks for the help clarifying gray suit ideas.
Magnifique top Classe d’élégance bravo l’artiste
Awesome video! Thanks for all the advice for keeping us stylish. Could you make a video for what doctors should wear? It’s always hard to find and combine classy clothes with a bleach color white coat. Thank you for all your hard work!
Voila www.gentlemansgazette.com/dressing-the-doctor-classic-wardrobe/?
Gentleman's Gazette Ah this is perfect! Exactly what I needed - thank you sir!
My first bespoke suit will be in charcoal grey. I can't wait for it to be ready.
Out of curiosity, how often do you unexpectedly find yourself not being the best dressed guy in the room?
I'd bet this has never happened.
Pretty much never. If ever you see someone with an amazing suit with a pocket square. More often than not their tie and pocket square will match exactly or they’ll just play it safe by wearing a white pocket square. Another thing, their lapels May not match the width of their tie. Consequently if there is someone dressed as good as you, it is almost certainly due to them dressing perfectly by accident. Therefore, you would still be the best dressed person in the room even if someone else is wearing an identical outfit
The day I meet up with Sven, lol.
Not with anyone but except some of my og bros (they just dress like they are ex mob boss’s)
Man you guy's are freaking awesome thank you 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👌🏾
Where did you get that orange striped shirt with a contrasting collar. It s beautiful. BTW great video as always
Thank you for this advice.
Hey, thank you for this. I've always liked the look of a grey suit and helping mix it up via shirt and ties is great. New sub here and thanks once again.
Very interesting.
Hello, my name is Jack I’m 16 years old and absolutely love dressing up every day weather at school or out for the day . I only feel comfortable when I’m dressed up. Can’t wait to watch more videos. Also thank you so much for this video, I just recently purchased a heather grey herringbone suit. I really want sure what to go along with it
You are doing well. M.
I enjoyed watching this Thank you
I have a darker grey suit, with a light blue pinstripe. Do you think the red houndstooth tie from fort belvedere ? Would work with it ?
Sven- you should do a worth it video on the common project achilles low sneaker. I'd love to see your opinion on dress sneakers
Brilliant video. Thank you...
great channel
Excellent tips!
Off-white/stone colored shirts should be more popular. When I finally start investing in tailoring I'm definitely going MTM with some of those colors.
Could you please make a video about frock coats?
A little out of his time period, but YEEEEEAAAAAAAASSSAS!

@UCpimRID5nk_53RgkL_xRtIg I will definitely wear frock coats and top hats when I grow up.
Nice vid. Very classy.
Navy Suede double monks at 7:34 are gorgeous

Very informative and well-built video, as always ! It seems that there is a little glitch at 10:31 though : you're mentioning a "knitted tie" but you show a grenadine one instead. Keep it up, cheers from France :)
Well spotted, Arthur! We're currently making some changes to our video review process, so you'll hopefully see fewer of these errors in the future. Thanks for keeping us honest! :)

Your tips are great but in the suite demo the darker gray suites didn't look properly fitted
If I only knew what are those green derbies you are wearing so I can get me a pair and complete my shoe collection!!!
👍🏽thank you
Colored Dress Shirts: Perfect for adding color to dressier attire. If you think otherwise, you need to rethink your life choices when it comes to shirts.
So, I am absolutely in love with the color grey, and I just have to ask - grey tie with a grey suit (of approximately the same shade)? Or is that a no-no?
what about the light purple shirt? also looks good
What color should I choose for my belt and shoes if I wear a brown tie?
Have you done a video on the Navy suit? If not are you planning on doing one? Cheers.
What's your take on yellow ties? I've been thinking about getting active in the Libertarian Party, and yellow's the color to be associated with.
TRUMP 2020
what is your opinion on burgundy shirt with a medium gray suit
Could you guys have a look at a the classic Mackintosh raincoat? It's been throwing it down here in England as of late, and I'd love to know if it's worth the investment. Thanks guys!
Hi, what's your opinion on wearing a white shirt with a thin stripe with a charcoal thin striped suit.
Hey you say that about coloured shirts but what if it's one with just a waistcoat instead of a full suit
I read elsewhere that the contrast between your suit / shirt should be similar to the contrast between your skin/hair - do you agree with this advice?
I am very low contrast - and so I was wondering...
My friend can you do the same for a burgundy suit?
I love light grey suit and pink shirt...
It's a nice combination
Do you think a small polka dot or floral shirt would go well with a light gray suit ?
What about a business casual look? For example just a button up shirt with no tie or jacket? Would these rules still apply?
In my native Finland, the "dark suit" dress code mandates a light grey or silver-colored tie. But does that not present too big a contrast between a charcoal grey or navy blue suit? I have heard you recommend a dark tie with a dark suit - although, in your morning dress code guide you stipulate light ties similar to the dark suit (evening) dress code. Just wondering, out of idle curiosity, which is "correct" or whether there is a geographical difference between dress codes. :)
Really like that suit, where do you get them?
I have a tan, square patterned coat that's vintage but a bit tight. I want to wear it with a vest but I'm not sure what kind of vest. Any advice?
But where did you get your club collar shirt? Trying to get one for such a while but as far as I know, only Proper Cloth has them.
Raphael,
Can you make a Video about Dress Code for Teachers?
Where can I get those rounded collar shirts?
Can you do something with a bow tie but keep the grey suit?
Do the style of Cuff Links really matter?? Like I have some themed Cuff Links would that match with any suit?
Hey guys, hope you or someone from comment section could advise me, if it is ok to wear oxford shirt that has chest logo with a suit, and same question about chest pocket. Basically I want to wear navy suit with oxford shirt + tie to event with cocktail dress code.
I'm thinking about pairing a charcoal grey three piece suit with a Burgundy polka dot neck tie and a blue Winchester shirt.
I'm not sure about what pocket square I should wear. Any thoughts?
Miguel Luis Very good choice of colors :) For the pocket square, you could either go with a solid white or a pattern that complements the rest of the outfit.
@@marioburgos712 well, thank you!
I was thinking of a solid white as well, because I didn't want the outfit to be too bold, but I wasn't too sure, and it never hurts to get another opinion
Thank you, vielen Dank für den unermüdlichen Kampf gegen das schwarze T-Shirt in all seinen Facetten.
good video
Hello Gentlemens and Ladies. First at all : Thank you for sharing your experience with this topic. As an engineer I started to replace my shoes to hand made shoes. But at one point I wasnt willing to spend too much money yet. BUT I figured out the best range for me was 300 to 500$. Therefor I found out the best shoes around this price range are
1.) Shoepassion (You can get them in the store on sale for 250$- Normal price 350$)
2.) Ellen Admonds
3.) Cobbler Union
PLEASE could you do a very detailed video where you compare those shoes. Maybe show the advantages with some stylish clothes. As reference take the classic "Cap Toe Oxford".
I own a pair of Italien style Oxfords from the patina line from Shoepassion. Quality is good, degails arent that high but they are a little tight.
Best Regards and finest wishes, MoccaLG
The mint green shirt with the mint green lined pocket square where can I purchase them ?
Black shirt only works with light grey suit and even then only for more relaxed occasions.
Raphael is ok if i wear a pink shirt with a medium grey
Guys I might need your help with I have hard time deciding if im gonna buy a double breasted navy pinstripe suit Or an double breasted navy suit
What is “dwelve”? 0:45. Love the videos though :-)
Whoa whoa whoa how in the world does a denim shirt go with a grey suit? To me that looks so informal
Why all the ties are messed up
I prefer the cocktail shaken not stirred
Kirby Allison Collab please!
As always, wonderful and sagely advice. There was some great information in this video that hit home for me. However, in watching this, I really think you should have checked your own neck tie results before putting them all out. Many were tied horribly and looked scruffy and I think your own UA-cam channel would’ve condemned quite a few sir.
And all those suits makes you look like Mr Bean.
I think ‘worsted’ is pronounced ‘woosted’ as in Wostershire. M.
Can I pair a black shirt with charcoal grey suit and also style charcoal as casual as charcoal grey is versatile
