I think this could be one of your best videos in terms of informing your views on a game. This is such a wonderful slice of theme and mechanics. I like Marvel Legendary, but this looks like the great next step. Thanks for these, Board Game Replay is now one of my "must watch" on my subscription list :)
Thanks so much! I'm glad the video shows how great this game is. To be honest, I was a little worried with it being a pure card game that I needed to make scans of every single card for clarity... But it seems like our discussions still showed how things were working mechanically without the need for that level of detail. Anyway, I really appreciate the kind words. So awesome to be a part of that "must watch" rotation. Thank so much :)
You said it! Tough game, but lots of fun. Plenty of room for replay-ability with all the different modules you can play. Glad your group is having fun with it!
Wow thank you guys for the gameplay. I actually mentioned you to play it when you had the LIVE-24 hour marathon. Keep the good work up guys :) /Swedish boardgamer
Thank you Axel! Really glad you enjoyed the video! I'm happy that were able to accommodate your suggestion for this game too...it just took us a little while :) Thanks so much for watching!
Played this one and it's a great game :) Another great show from you guys... and I have to let you know that Shadowrun Crossfire is coming this Christmas... one of the gifts from my wife :) That, ZhanGuo and Sons of Anarchy :) Keep up the excellent work guys :)
Paulo that sounds like an AWESOME set of Christmas gifts! Excited for you to try Crossfire too! Just be ready to get clobbered your first few games! I really want to try and play a game of Sons of Anarchy with the guys soon. I've never seen the show, but I hadn't seen Spartacus when I first tried that so I think it'll ok. Would love to hear your thoughts on all those games after Christmas...let me know what you think! Anyway, thanks so much Paulo...Have a great Christmas!
Board Game Replay ZhanGuo I've already had a chance to play and it's an AWESOME game...prepare to be brain burned thou! :p Merry Christmas to you too, your family and all of the guys and girls of the show :)
This was a really cool video, the first one I watched of yours. But I've been interested in playing this game. Consider yourself lucky you have people to play with, makes me jealous. Keep it up!
Interesting, very interesting. I'm a fan of the Alien franchise, but not so much of cooperative deck builders. I think this one looks good enough that I might have to give it a try. Thanks guys! Merry Christmas, hope you guys enjoy the holidays!
Very cool Zach, glad to hear it! I think even if you're not into the pure-cooperative deck builders, this has enough potential player conflict (hidden agendas, chestburster alien player, etc) to make it different. If you end up picking it up, I certainly hope you enjoy it! Thanks so much for the holiday wishes, and for checking out the video. We hope you have you and your family have a great Christmas and holiday season as well!
Hey Guys!! Thanks for the replay on Aliens! I love the game and only had the opportunity to play it a couple of times. My question for you is the face hugger mechanic. I saw that you were playing them out of the barracks which I found interesting. I have gone through the rules quite a bit and I was wondering if that was a personal add that you all incorporated or am I missing that in the rules. I like the fact that you incorporated that into the barracks. Are you adding them to the hive deck as well? Thanks for any info you can relate back. One final note, love the replay's guys and the board game selections! Your sessions are top notch and I really look forward to each and every episode. Keep up the great work!
Thanks a lot David, we all really appreciate the kinds words and your interest in the show! To answer your question, normally you don't shuffle Facehuggers into the Barracks, but this was done based on the scenario we were playing (Alien 3). Now off the top of my head I can't remember if that was done at the beginning of the game, or due to an event card (I'm thinking it was most likely an event or hazard card). There were a total of 3 Facehuggers shuffled into the Barracks, plus the single Facehugger that's always in the Strike deck...lots of opportunities to get hugged :P
Board Game Replay Thanks for the reply. That makes sense especially since I have tackled was the 1st movie scenario. Once again you guys rock! Have a great Holiday!
Easily one of my favorite games released in 2014. Extremely thematic (especially for fans of the franchise - which I am), brutally difficult, and a great co-op experience!
You said it Bill, such an awesome game! Can't wait to get into the hidden agendas and custom scenarios too...Oh and Legendary: Predator is supposed to be next...think of the possibilities!
Board Game Replay While Predator sounds absolutely amazing to me, it wouldn't hurt my feelings to hear about some expansions to this Alien series first. Somehow I think we'll probably get both.
Even though Alien is one of my favorite movies, I've been dragging my feet to get this one - mainly because I heard setup is a bit of a drag and I'm not a big fan of some of Upper Deck's practices - but I might not be able to do so for much longer. All I hear is excellent things about this game, even from people who didn't like Marvel Legendary. Especially how thematic it is, which is a major draw since I love the franchise. I might have to make this the next up my purchase list. All other priorities rescinded.
***** The set up to play the game isn't too bad, it's the initial organization that is a total beast. Upper Deck did a terrible job of packaging these 500+ cards in any semblance of order. It literally took me more than two hours to organize and inventory all the cards. Once that's complete, setting up the game is a breeze by comparison. Still, don't let that stop you from enjoying this game. Played solo or with a group, it's excellent.
Are or is there going to be expansions for this? thinking off grabbing this for Solo play, but i have heard most boxes are missing cards and thats put me off.
+TheFewzz I can't speak to the Alien Encounters expansions specifically, but they did just debut Legendary Predator at GenCon this year. It's a very similar format with a few new additions, and you can mix elements from them together. As far as missing cards, I'm sure if that happens to you, it would only take an email to Upper Deck and they'd send you out replacements. Publishers are generally pretty good about that stuff.
Hey, I've only played once (1st scenario-Alien) and am a bit confused. Unless I'm mistaken, you guys drew facehuggers from the barracks to the HQ. Did I miss something in the set up when I played or did they end up in that deck some other way? My understanding is that the Hatchery cards are set aside in their own deck and only come out when they're called for (for example, by an Event triggering an Egg hatching). Thanks in advance!
Sorry I haven't responded sooner...It's been a while since this game so I don't remember the exact details. I believe in this scenario we were supposed to shuffle them into barracks as an additional challenge to overcome.
I love the idea of having an Alien deck builder like this. My concern is, if players die, how miserable is it to sit there and watch? Is it a game that will make people sit for an hour and learn to hate it?
Well, it's hard to say as everyone's taste in player elimination can be a little different. But honestly every time we've had a player die, it was only a short time before the game ended (with a win or loss). Even then those players that were killed were still engaged in the game because they wanted to see how we did. The chances of getting eliminated early are pretty rare and when that happens it's most likely to be from a facehugger. So if you wanted to keep an early eliminated player involved, you could just use the rules to have that player come back alive as an alien. So that's the long answer to your question. But in short, I'd say that this is a pretty thematic game so if everyone is getting into the theme, they won't mind dying too much as it's all part of the game.
Hmm, well as you know the Marvel version of the game shares the same core mechanic with the combo / deck building system. If you like that theme you could use that game to create your own custom scenarios and play them similarly to how they work in this version. With all the expansions available for the Marvel version, there's a huge pool of cards to choose from too. Other than that...you may have to wait for them to come out with an "Encounters" theme that works for you. Predator is supposed to be on the way soon...Who knows where they'll go after that.
Chillburn This isn't an expansion, it's a standalone game. It just shares the "Legendary" title because it uses the same core mechanics. The "Encounters" name is what they're going to use for future standalone games using this engine such as Alien Vs. Predator (and anything else they come up with!).
+Red Mage If Predator or Marvel did not work for you theme wise, they have another one coming out at GenCon this year, Legendary Encounters: Firefly. I enjoy Aliens, so theme was not an issue for me (plus the illustrations are very cartoon-y sooo) but I love Firefly, can't wait for it's release. :)

got this last week and have played it about 3 times so far with friends...and have only come close to winning once. Very difficult, but very fun

Board Game Replay and maybe it can make Prometheus better like it did Alien 3 and Ressurection

Can you use the recruit/attack points of a coordinate card in your turn? Not to coordinate yourself of course.
This was a really cool video, the first one I watched of yours. But I've been interested in playing this game. Consider yourself lucky you have people to play with, makes me jealous. Keep it up!
you can play it solo and then you have it for when friends come over
