I have a different take on this song. My mother and I had a co-dependent relationship for a lot of my life. My mother was a narcissist and was very demanding and critical of everything I did. I told her one time about a guy that I was crazy about and she told me he was a lawyer and would never love me, because I worked with children and my mother thought that was a waste of time and there was no money in that. This song could easily describe our relationship, until her cruelty reached a new level and I finally told her I had enough; she hung up on me and I we were estranged for the last ten years of her life. Her death brought out a lot of conflicting emotions. The love for her never went away, but when she died, I finally felt free of her. It's a damn shame. I used to play this song over and over and wonder if I would ever have the strength to pull away from her. It didn't feel good, like I thought it would, but it saved my sanity. I had to work to build up my self esteem. I have a good cry when I listen to this and then I go on with my life; living, learning and forgiving.
