Serigne Cheikh Ndiguel Fall (ser-een cher ndig-el fall) is a devotional song with kora, guitar, bass, and sabar from Aba Diop & the Yermande Family honoring the living spiritual guide of the Senegalese Sufis known as the Baye Fall. “I grew up playing in front of Cheikh Ndiguel, that is why I made a song to say ‘thank you’ for making us real real real Baye Fall.” -Aba, whose percussive vocal hook punctuates traditional background chanting. A humble and hypnotic offering of praise when music is all you have.
The video tells the story of the Baye Fall in Touba, Senegal, as they show their devotion through their service on a day during Ramadan. While the rest of Touba fasts during the daylight hours of Ramadan, the Baye Fall work to prepare food for the city. The food is then carried in a procession to a central location where it is portioned out and delivered, free of charge, to residents throughout the city of Touba. The Baye Fall do this every day for the whole month of Ramadan, feeding countless people for free in a devotional act of solidarity and community care.
