    I never understood people's hatred for standing in lines. I always saw it as a chance to take a break and catch my breath (Figuratively). The thing that always irritates me the most is being with a relative in line who can't stand lines. I'm always saying "Chill out, don't be so uptight; you're giving me a headache."

      MissAtomic Yes, very figuratively. When you have a hundred things pulling you in different directions, waiting in line can be a nice pause.

      Admitting you're wrong is like admitting you're stupid, it hurts the self esteem. Some people can do it all the time and laugh it off, others can never do it without feeling depressed, and some others can do it with some instances but not other instances.

    I have never switched lines XD I've only changed lines when a cashier opens a new line. And I can always judge the best lines by number or people vs number of items. I'm also quite content with the world around me I just day dream while I wait.

    Hey Trace, Yeah it's all about perception, I've learned to spot the best line to wait in by calculating the number of people times the number of items in their cart plus the age and condition of the other shoppers. It usually works, Until someone has a "Price Check"then we all secretly hate them for that!!!
    Not to be a Perv but...what I was perceiving the most in this video was that little tuft of chest hair peek-a-booing out of the top of your shirt, a promise of more good thing to come. Thanks for that;)

  • @mspooner

    The one line thing sounds great. It shows how many cash registers need to be open, and as soon as the next register is open, someone is being served. That's sort of how some WalMart self-checkouts work: everyone wanting to self-checkout waits in that line and the first person in line gets the open machine. If two or three machines open at once, two or three people are able to move through.
    I'm not sure how this would work with seven or twelve registers and angsty customers, without hiring another person to guide the line. Hmm....if it's more efficient though, why haven't American businesses caught on?

  • @Mackerachi
    @Mackerachi 10 років тому

    They implemented the single long line at one of the bigger stores where I live. I think it's great. It feels like it's moving along faster, because people are getting out to multiple tills. There's also a lot bigger selection of front till goodies that goes all the way along the line, so as you are going down it, you are seeing new things. Keeps you occupied, and I'm sure they sell a lot more off of it as well.

    • @Mackerachi
      @Mackerachi 10 років тому

      It also bypasses the slow cashier problem. If a cashier is slow or a customer is taking a long time, you're just going to the next available one vs waiting on that one person.

    As someone that works for a church and their cook--who is my dad, I go to Sam's Club every Tuesday with him to go get food for the Wednesday supper as well as cleaning supplies, and goods for the nursery. That's two carts, and Sam's Club carts are larger than most carts, and he is someone that does not enjoy waiting in lines. I understand; you're on a time limit with food. So he tends to line hop were as I prefer going "This one looks good." and staying there. Mainly because I don't enjoy moving the carts of stuff every which way.

  • @kichikonekochan5440

    I prefer the single long line, it's a first come first serve basis and the first one in line get's served first. Makes sense to me. When deciding which of multiple line choice I look at how many people have lot's of items in the line or how short it is. Sometimes it is the longer wait, but I find it pointless to jump back and forth... unless I notice the cashier having a lot of technical problems.

  • @BishopS

    So thats why stores like Best Buy and Fry's Electronics and some other stores have one line that leads into the cashier area. Next person goes to the next available cashier.
    Then other stores like Wal Mart and Target and other stores like that tend to have one line for each cashier. Those probably would be more efficient if all the registers were were open at once, but they never are.

    At the Tesco in Poland i saw the best system: A long line is formed before the cash area and a monitor is standing there. As soon as one cashier hits the button to sum the total the monitor tells the person in front of the line to move to that cashier. That way only one person is there at a time and while he's paying the next one is on it's way.

  • @x-iso

    in grocery stores you can always just look briefly how many stuff people have in the line and calculate pretty accurately which line will be faster. in some situations there are other factors as well, that can tell that the line will be quite slow.

  • @dynamicworlds1

    Not only is the long line more efficient, but I find it less tedious because with enough points of sale, it keeps moving so you're never standing in the same spot too long *and* you don't have a 2nd one to compare it too. (also if one person/register becomes a hold-up, you're never *stuck* behind that person, the slowdown is spread over the whole system and becomes much less noticeable)

  • @BoingotheClown

    My local Walmart uses that long line method for its express line. There are six cashiers, but only one line. A monitor at the front of the line shows which cashier is ready for a new customer, and it does indeed seem to move faster than other lines.

    I work in retail, and I have gotten yelled at because I was the only cashier in the store, let alone open to check people out. The reason I started getting anxiety, is because I have dealt with that before and is very unpleasant. People get mad at me because I'm not checking people out as fast as they think I should, and also I am getting frustrated because I have to do certain things such as, asking people if they get our catalogs and coupons in the mail, asking if they want specific warranties for our items. It is very frustrating for me to need to do so many things during the transaction, and then having someone in line who is frustrated at me because they did not think, "I am going to a busy store I should probably have more time to get the things that I need so that I can get out when I need to"

  • @brandonreed09
    @brandonreed09 10 років тому +1

    The best line is no line. Why haven't they just figured out how to allow a shopper to use their smart phone as both the checkout scanner and the digital wallet. So you can go down the isle, see what you want, open up an app, scan the bar code, and hit a payment button. You could pay for each item immediately or place them in a cart in the app until you have everything and then checkout. The app could even create a digital receipt to show an store reps who may question you.

  • @alexandraa.5872

    It's pretty easy to look for what can can possibly be the fastest line though. Look for happy confident people who look like they have everything ready so there won't be any slow down (and who might not pay in cash). Look for fewer items. Look for people in their 20s-30s.
    Worse I've ever got was 4 hours in line (there was just one line) waiting to get my brother's passport done. No chairs to sit down. That was a great experience, especially for the people who had the wrong documentation with them, or the ones with babies with them.

    I feel like when ppl are in line and your the 1 cashing out...you should already have your cash or your credit or debit card ready. It's bs when I got to watch you looking all around for it in your pocketbook or you trying to figure out which credit cards or how much cash you got. Have it ready and things could move faster.

      I realized at drive thru's that I'd still have my wallet in my pocket when I got to the pay window and thought to myself "holy shit, I'm a douch! I should have had this out the whole time." I don't mind waiting in lines; what I DO mind is when I'm stuck in traffic on an on-ramp (or something similar) and some dickhead cuts in at the last moment from another, faster moving lane. I will concur that a single line for all stations at a store does seem to work better. And it "feels" faster because you're moving more often, even if the line is of course longer than if each station had their own line.

    I seem to already do the line math properly, because I never feel like I am waiting in line too long, or that another line is moving faster. And more often than not, I just use the self-checkout, because I don't believe in the whole "I shouldn't have to do the store's job" people seem to have about self-checkouts. It's pretty quick and minimal time waiting for anything. Otherwise I scan the crowd and available cash registers and generally park in the side of the parking lot that is more empty. Cashing out then is simple, because more people gravitate towards where they are parked, so the lines are almost always more empty on the opposite side of the building.
    I'm also not impatient, which seems to be a pretty rare thing. I plan ahead for things to avoid having limited time frames.

    I always love how people preach to me about the vertues of faith in god and all that....until the holiday season and then I watch so many of the people who look down on me as the "evil pagan" publically throw a temper tantrum fit for a five year old because they have to practice the vertue of patience. It's wating in line people; the cashier has no control over how much stuff the person in front of you got, or how long it takes that old person to count thier change, its thier job to be patient with you. If waiting in a line up is the worst thing that happens to you today watch the world news and you might notice that there are millions of people who wish that was all they had to deal with. Happy Holidays.

    • @RBuckminsterFuller
      @RBuckminsterFuller 10 років тому +13

      Five cashiers with 20 customers in each line where x: 10 customers, c: cashier
      xx > c
      xx > c
      xx > c
      xx > c
      xx > c
      OR one line with five cashiers
      xxxxxxxxxx > ccccc
      The latter will end up being more efficient because if one customer ends up taking longer then there will still be four cashiers working at optimum efficiency so the line will keep moving and no one ends up stuck.

    • @DeathTheKidIsYummy
      @DeathTheKidIsYummy 10 років тому +3

      Zaziuma because they're talking about having all the cashiers in one line like at a movie theatre (at least where I live) there's one line and the four cashiers, so waiting time is shorter as there isn't say one line with 30 people another with 25 and so on, everyone is in one line and they're all being served at the same rate because four people are still being served at once

    How appropriate, maybe my worst wait in line have been today a few hours ago, airplane didn't land and couldn't go home today, 2 hours in line to get voucher for hotel, taxi and dinner after waiting 4 hours in Funchal airport for airplane that couldn't land due to strong winds... 2 stupid things happen when I was waiting in line, first I was last in 1 of 2 lines and the other was shorter so I moved there, then first line just went faster and I know the person that was originally in front of me got there half an hour sooner than me. But I think I should just have waited on near by chairs because being last in a line wouldn't change much, so at least I could have waited sited down... and I would have done it if I was alone, but my friend induced me in this line change and stand up waiting...

  • @XanderKarr
    @XanderKarr 10 років тому

    Actually this is far better explained by economics. Lines always reach an equilibrium of waiting time do to people exploiting the gains of a faster moving line. On average, the parcel count is equal and the line only seems unfair to the marginal costumer. Not matter which line that marginal costumer picks, it will take the same amount of time - but because of their presence in the line technically the line will have a longer wait. So the person continuously switches lines to no avail.

    Is why you should avoid the following Wal-Mart, target , and go smaller chain stores and go early because after 11am will be longer wait . When I am in line waiting which is rare I jog in place or do sit UPS . I have patience like no other in court when they say 9am it really means 11 am after all the jail birds go . That's longest been waiting in court and you can't leave or else is warrant so always stay in line for what matters most like avoiding jail .

    i know of places that do the single line and several cashiers, once a cashier is free there is someone that points the next person in line to that cashier. i was able to get though the line way faster

    I like the single line, myself (at least better than a bunch of lines). That's what Marshalls uses here. Then I don't have to worry about searching for the best line, and everyone's wait time is fair.

    The worst line I see on a regular basis is the one at Costco's food court. They have multiple registers open during busy hours, and want people to line up at each one, but have no markers indicating this is the system. So what happens? Most of the time people end up in one giant line that gets in passerby's way because it just goes straight back instead of winding around in the open space in front of the registers.

  • @JaredReabow

    actually when you leave the other line it does speed up as it has 1 less person in it, and if you change line, so do others

    I think the worst line I ever felt like I was for to long in was at one of those dollar stores where there was only 1 line, most people had 101 items or so, I only had a few, and I was waiting behind people. It was quite annoying and I wished they would of had more then 1 line open. The best kind of lines I've been in, were maybe long but moved along soon enough, and there was more then 1 line. Some of the worst are when a cash register broke down, people either can't do the math or are not allowed to do the job with out the machine. *shrugs* I think they just cant' do the math... I got to a farmers market, and when I get a lot of items the people whine and try to decide who will do the math, lol the funny thing is there is a calculator sitting there on everyone's smart phone but they rather play with it apps tell the battery gets low.

    The worst lines are those at an amusement park I think, especially on those warm summer days... Middle aged chubby sweaty hairy men who think people around them will appreciate it when they take their shirts off. And for some reason a lot of people think it's normal to smoke in those lines. Antisocial assholes, do that somewhere where you're not bothering sooo many people with it.
    I don't mind standing in a line most of time (at grocery stores, airports etc), especially when I have something to do (when I was in Paris with my boyfriend and we were standing in line for going to the second floor of the Eiffel Tower we just played risk on his phone while were waiting and I actually really enjoyed standing in that line), but those lines at amusements parks... I hate those.

    Worst damn place to wait in line is in a telephone que. You have no idea how many people are ahead of you or how long it will take. When I go out I always have a book to read on the bus/subway that I can read in line as well. So I have no probl;em with most lines.

    I try and find the line with the least amount of old seniors(ladies)/amount of items. Most times they only decide to reach for their purse and hunt for their debit card after the total is known. Then they they take their time; making several mistakes and invariably having to use different cards because they don't know their own financial situation beforehand. The elderly gentleman usually are more on the ball... but not by much, compared to woman with children. Younger single men seem to be the fastest, perhaps because they are more focused; even with more items than younger single woman... sorry feminists

    • @SassetGingerelli
      @SassetGingerelli 10 років тому +4

      People need to realize, feminists are not man-haters. I do agree with your order of people who are slowest and fastest though. I'm a young female, and I either go shopping alone or with my son and I'm usually very aware of my surroundings and try to be quick and efficient at the register. I think it's a matter of being aware of your surroundings and being focused on the goal at hand (getting out of the store as soon as possible)

    • @jasonw1569
      @jasonw1569 10 років тому +1

      Sasset Gingerelli Exactly... and that is a left-brain concept predominantly found in males and some females. Of course i am using broad-spectrum generalities :-)

    • @georgecataloni4720
      @georgecataloni4720 10 років тому

      Sasset Gingerelli Some are man haters, though. Just look at the fact that "I bathe in male tears" T shirts exist, or "Male tears" drinking mugs. Those folks who like that stuff call themselves feminists.
      But more relevantly: feminists all too often think like social engineers, trying to correct any imbalance of outcomes without regard to the balance of opportunity. Those you cannot say are not "true" feminists, because that does fit the definition (as does the reverse).

    • @SassetGingerelli
      @SassetGingerelli 10 років тому +1

      George Cataloni look into the opinions of the majority of today's feminists (male and female). They are hoping for equal pay, and rights as well as men being able to show emotions without being ridiculed. However, I guess this isn't the place for such discussions.

    • @SassetGingerelli
      @SassetGingerelli 10 років тому +1

      Jason W some would argue that the whole left brained and right brained concept isn't relevant anymore, and that all people use both sides of the brain in different ways. I think it was actually on a dnews video. Anyhoo, not arguing just making a statement :)

      @jonassamuel4376 10 років тому

      well but people mostly react to slow, if people would be more attentive this would be the best solution (with recycling ofc) and the longer one customer takes the more sense number tickets make, for shopping it might be to short to be usefull.

    People are starting to profile the cashiers to avoid the slow line. They can scan the registers and know who is fast and who is slow. So if you're impatient and scan only for the shortest line you've fallen into the slow cashier trap and will soon want to switch as you describe..

  • @TSCTH
    @TSCTH 10 років тому

    I'm Danish and I've been using an even better method for years: People are stupid, so do the opposite of what they do. ^_^
    When a new register is opened, everyone flocks to it and even leave your line for a worse place in the new line. So don't switch.
    People avoid lines with a handful of shopping carts, thinking the scanning process increase a lot by amount of items. So take that line, since scanning time only exceed paying/bagging time if carts are overstocked.
    And people stress themselves by shopping at the worst times, preferring to buy a lot when a store is packed by everyone returning home from work. So don't schedule shopping around those times or at least only use those times for buying that one thing you need right now.
    Result: Lines emptying before you, quickly serviced customers with carts and practically no lines, just by doing what stupid people don't.

    Basically before you get in line you do some quick calculations - what cashier is most efficient, how many people are in each line and how many items does it look like they're buying - and then you put your ass in the line and you wait until it's your turn. Problem solved. Impatient people are just stupid.
