    This is one of my favorite spiritual choral songs. I love it so much. It makes me imagine the everyday pain of living in servitude and fear, and rejoicing in the hope of being free, happy and at rest with all of their loved ones in the promised land. This arrangement is electric.

    My
    Mother
    Died
    Yesterday.
    We are South African by birth. And I shared one song with my sisters, as she lay dying.onh her death bed. I think you know which one.
    But this one is for me, in Him.
    Thank you

    No music in the world that can't be made better with a little blues. Fantastic arrangement. Looks like it was difficult to learn and the choir loved every minute of it. From the look of all those blondes I thought Stellenbosch was in Sweden

      Not a tat, just decoration. Search for any other South African choir and chances are, someone will have something similar, especially if they are performing traditional South African music. It has significance with many cultures in SA but is usually done in white.

      how? this is a South African choir, & traditional spirituals (gospels especially) are sung in many choirs around the world as well. if anything, this is cultural APPRECIATION, you should consider learning the difference. this choir in particular is pretty diverse, but even if it weren't, would it not be beneficial for a white choir to sing music outside of their cultural confines, assuming they do the piece justice and are respectful of the culture? personally I feel that it'd be more harmful to do the opposite. besides, basically all American music draws from African American tradition (blues and jazz are one example) would you rather them *only* sing European/traditionally white music? I don't think I need to point out why that's a bad idea.

    The words are " I'm a gonna take it home a to my Jesus, ain't a that good news?" They left that out of every verse, except the one where the men sing. I have to wonder if that was a conspiracy of some of the basses and tenors to do that whether it got them in trouble or not, because omitting such a thing in a song like this turned their stomachs like it did mine. If you are so ruled by Political Correctness that you can't sing the lyrics as they were written, then don't insult the composer and his art by editing them at your whim; moreover, don't insult the whole Black culture by removing something as integrall as the Name of Jesus from what at the time was called
    a 'Negro Spiritual'. You should all be ashamed of yourselves, but 3 cheers for those guys who refused to participate in such an insult.

    • @leemosia6227
      @leemosia6227 6 років тому +11

      Firstly, this is how the music was arranged. I would know. I sing in this choir. Secondly. The words "I'm a gonna take it home a to my Jesus, ain't a that good news?" are not omitted; the sopranos sing them like every five seconds (an exaggeration, but I'm sure you'll get the point if you give it another listen). Honestly, there is even a close up on the S2s singing the line at 0:25. Furthermore, no choristers where harmed in the performance of this music (if I have to explain this joke as well... *roll eyes*). And to conclude, please don't spread negativity where no one wants it. Have a lovely day! :)

      Lee Mosia Well, not being a lip-reader, it took me four cycles at the point you referenced to SEE, by watching each young lady in the frame very closely, I admit it appears they are singing take it home to my Jesus, although what I HEAR at that point is still 'take it home, take it home, ain't-a that good news . . ' and I go by what I hear, as do most audience members, I suspect, and what I HEARD was different from what I'm used to hearing, and that's what got my attention. That they were were singing the arrangement as written was never in question, in fact the nature of my criticism centered on the arrangement and the arranger. Arrangers, by definition, take liberties with both music AND lyrics, as is the case here, and I couldn't help but wonder WHY the exercise of that liberty involved the numerous exclusions of the Saviour's Name? It had to be that the arranger felt that is was artistically just better with such omissions, however many there were, OR, as I suspected, this was an intentional omission dictated by political correctness on the part of the arranger who wanted to make sure everyone listening was aware that this was to celebrate a style closely connected to a culture, at a certain time, in the history of black people in America, and most certainly NOT to endorse any religious or spiritual position contained in the work, as this would be a blatant attempt to establish a state religion, (now its time for ME to roll MY eyes), yes, violate the sacred 'separation'' clause of the constitution (even though there is no such thing) or worse, it might 'offend' someone. I admit I have a raw nerve about this, because my wife has been a choir teacher for 40 years, some of which was in our failed public school system, and the things she was forbidden from doing, (like putting up anything with the word 'Christmas' on it in her room) for the exact same stupid reasons as cited above, had reached a point that was utterly laughable, and I found the whole thing offensive. To the extent that this arrangement and its ommissions resembled the same type of ridiculousness, it is to that same extent I found THIS offensive. Let me state here that this in no way reflects on the virtuosity of this choir; I said nothing negative about these kids and their talent, and I applaud all the hard work and rehearsal it takes to bring a piece to this level of quality. I never suggested that any choristers were harmed, or that their faith was undermined - I don't really know where that even came from. If it was your attempt at some kind of joke . . Well, uh . . Don't quit your day job . .
      Whenever some video like this is posted on a public social media site with an open comment section, I have the right to state my opinion about whatever aspect of it I care to, and I will continue to do so. I can't take responsibility for what you might choose to characterize as " speading negativity" , but I AM astonished and dismayed that you feel so free, perhaps even eager, and with a dash of smugness and a pinch of sarcasm, to suggest to me what I can and cannot say.
