I think if a teacher has time, it is just as valuable to teach the mistakes that can happen as it is to teach the correct way to do things. So good on you!
I've been really struggling to make a kidney bean in blender, your tutuorial was by far the most relevant, clear and helpful out of an hour of searching, and I have successfully made the bean!
It literally took me a week to figure out how to apply the mirror modifier using Ctrl-A. Thank you. Now I can start marking seems on my model.

i spent 2 hours looking in lots of places where to find the Symmetrize Tool, i just needed to watch the 17 :47, and just for that you just earned my thumbs up and a sub, THANK YOU! GREAT LIFE SAVER!
My good Sir, this is by far the best video tutorial that clearly demonstrates most of techniques for the least amount of time. Most tutorials have a certain lack of pedagogy. I am new to Blender (my experience is 3ds Max and Z Brush) and this is EXACTLY what I was looking for. This is my third week in Blender, my previous knowledge is interfering with the new one, I just wish I found this video earlier, it would have saved me a lot of time. Your students are very lucky to have you.
Thank you Colin! You have open my eye on symmetrize tool. Great explanation of details and fine tuning of mirror modifier behavior. I like your series because in contrast of step-by-step and no a step aside tutorials, your videos show different methods with comparisons of results and situations to use.
In some programs, you simply click a button to turn on mirror modeling without the need to manually set up for the use of a modifier and then apply later or the need to manually use symmeterize every time you make changes. However, I can see the advantage of symmeterize, where it helps me keep from forgetting that I left mirror mode on unintentionally.
Blender can do that too, check out the „enable mesh symmetry“ modes (buttons x/y/z next to the butterfly on the top right). Not sure why they were not mentioned in the video.
You really need to be a special person to remember the million shortcut key strokes in this program. Not to mention the menu trees that have the same names for completely different stuff. Open ware isn't free because you can waist your life learning how to do very simple things. Thanks for doing this video, I do appreciate it, really. But here's were the frustration become clear, shift D, unless your are using captions it sounds like shift key. Now after trying shift-move 200 times you get to that OH F'this level. 1:22 into the video and you already want to put your laptop in a blender.
Learning blender. Teacher to teacher. Can you have create small products / mockups and explain the tools. It will easy to remember and practice. Thanks and GOD bless YOU.
Enable your Auto Mirror add-on to save a couple of steps. Also, press B to toggle boundary when insetting next to the mirror axis. Those extra steps with the windshield were painful to watch.
I heard someone say to never right click out of an operation like loop cuts, they said pressing the escape key is best for avoiding duplicate vertices.
Turning off "Boundary" (B hotkey by default) when insetting one or more faces with a mirrored edge seems to work for insetting across the mirror boundary. (14:00) I think I saw a solution for scaling across a mirror boundary as well, but I seem to have forgotten what it was...
You can select the vertices of that edge loop that are on the centre line, shift+s cursor to selected, change pivot type to 3d cursor, then scale. I think alt+s to use shrink/ fatten will probably do the same thing too.
I have a clay sculpture of a hannya face mask to be scanned and will use only one half of to be mirrored for perfect symmetry. Is there a view that uses lighting to the side so it can reveal any crookedness to the centerline so it can be appropriately corrected?
Hello, Born,I want to ask you what I should do if I'm making weapons like pistols and I'm trying to use the mirror modifier so there exactly the same on both sides, but when I try to cut in the middle, the center point is below and not in the middle like your ship.
hey when i use it as long as its of orange color it moves both in opposite direction , as soon as i right click it becomes black and then i can't re select it at all , i can do it if i reselect it completely manualy but if i make eyes then i can only select the part visible since the mech melts with the others , how can you re select the object completly
such good content, so little likes :( i love these series, even if i work for 2 years with blender few days per week. But still learning neat little tricks here. Great way how how you explain everything! You deserve so much more likes here... i would like to give 10 if i could ;)
Thanks for this, but what about when you're done with using the mirror modifier? Do you just click Apply and your mesh is two different sides or are they connected automatically? When applying textures/materials to a mirror modified object, it seems to mirror the material or completely distorts it when you bring it into an augmented reality engine. Any thoughts?
If a mesh has shape keys, say you're making another character from another with shape keys, is it possible to edit it and symmetrize it using the symmetrize tool? And do the shape keys automatically update?
hi I am havin problems with mirror modifier. like if i am modelling the right arm and i want it on the left side, i apply mirror modifiwr. but what it does is, it mirrors itself right on top of my object on opposite axis and turns to a single object. i dunno what i am doing wrong.
The issue is likely your mesh's origin. Is it in the middle of the arm you're modeling? The mirror modifier flips the copy it makes right over the origin of your mesh, so if your origin is in the middle of your arm, you're going to get overlapping arms when you mirror. Try this: go into edit mode, press A to select all vertices, edges or faces, then move them all (the entire mesh in edit mode) more to the side away from the origin (the mirror point). That should give more space between the real arm and the duplicate/mirror.
@@BornCG yes! It's exactly thatt. My object's origin is at its centre. I always do the 'set origin to geometry' thing. (m new to blender, coming from max and maya background, this origin point is confusing) Anyways I'll try this and let you know. Thank you so much for replying.

I am halfway through! I love it

The little details are great. It's the little details in Blender that can cause mental disorders.
Omg symmetrize is a time saver o.o
Comment like that make me think i am in the right place at the right time ..🤣🙇♂️
*Born making great models.
Me still waiting for the next part of the platformer.

you deserve million views

Thanks a lot. On a separate topic do you mind me asking what software you use to cast keyboard/mouse clocks? Thank you.

Thanks K1LLD0Z3R for your kind words! :)
i did ywhat you do, but the object didnt aappear when i clcik the mirror modifier
Please could you make a how to make a 3D platformer series

But what if you wanted to put a inset (example) or window in only the left side cockpit ?????
Any differences you want between the two sides, you model last. 👍

i used the symmetrize tool, but now the new mirrored mesh has weird shading
Are human figures too complex for this to work?
I'd love to have to do only half the work modifying a human character.
These two tools are perfect for character modeling! 👍
