Ever since seeing examples of this a few years ago I fell in love with the style and have attempted it myself, though not to the extent of this game. The lighting really does make all the difference in making a game look modern.
That was an incredibly qualitative talk with a great mix of code, schemas and code ; also the game looks amazing ! Please make more of this style of talk, I would love more details on those rain puddles.
I wish Epic would give more support to Paper 2D. Unreal is great for doing incredible things like these 2.5D games but Epic seemed to abandon Paper 2D. I’m actually surprised _(and thankful)_ they uploaded this.
I'm confused by this comment. Unreal is great at doing 2.5D but Epic is bad at it? Unreal IS Epic. Unreal Engine 4 is Epic Games' Proprietary Engine. What ever do you mean?
@Spirits Read again, literally you answered your own question. Epic, the owner of the engine has neglected its 2D module on the Unreal Engine _a.k.a. Paper 2D_ to the point that it’s become a decrepit tool by this point, hence my comment.
My normals look great in the preview section of Laighter and Sprite Illuminator but when I put my sprites in unreal they look muddy. I flipped the Y since that seems to be required for unreal (directx) but it still doesn't look great. Anyone know why?
Im working on a RPG like Octopath Traveler, but i have no experience in coding or pixel art. I can draw by hand my characters. I want an old school fell for my game with up to date techniques.
This is late but you have to flip the y or green channel to get started. I'm still having issues making it look as good as it does in the normal map generator previews.
Since when is 2D bad in ... make tools for making a pic better , light effects that can affect a pic - i have a feeling this is a forgotten or neglected thing form the past and news to new devolopers or newbies. Anyway lightning and couloring a map is really intresting topic for me .

@@Floating.Point. But you just said it was great at 2.5D
That art style looks amazing 🤙🏾
It does but nothing will compare with octopath traveler in my opinion
I really like the display of pixel style in 3d scenes.Such as < Octopath Traveler >.Thank you for your sharing !!
Awesome, surprised to not hear any post process discussion, but very cool.
The explanation about lighting went over my head
It did for me too when I first watched this, but then I learned how 3d modeling works and it helped a lot with the terminology.
*"The Last Night"*

Bro looks like he just woke up from bed and was running late for his presentation 💀
You’re too immature to even be watching videos like this.
Amazing presentation
is there any asset to test this concept?
Is this the theme song to the game, or is it an independent song. I really, really, really, like it.
Theme song!
This was very interesting!!
They did pretty cool lighting effects in Katana Zero. I wonder if similar methods were used :P
Is there any documentation regarding using dynamically blurred shadow decals? That looks really interesting

Anyone working on the edge normal lighting? I'm trying to replicate in UE5 and am having trouble getting it to work as it does in this presentation.

Some of the best pixel art animation I've ever seen.....BUT...why animals instead of people?
Oh it's simple, there's an odd trope of black and white anthro characters as a detective.
Case in point: Blacksad and Grandville

Because racoon detective is cool

Wind In the Willows for the cyberpunk era.
Looks amazing. To bad that there is no voice acting tough. It's a turnoff for me.
Looking forward to see makers of "The Last Night" come and claim it's plagiarized because game made of pixels, it has lighting and it's 2d in 3d
Tim won't do that lol, he RT's this kind of things and support them.
