Cumbrian Silage 2024. Massey Ferguson & JF drag chopper team lifting a heavy first crop.

  • My yearly visit to one of my favourite farms to once again watch the in-house forager harvesting team at work.
Powered by an immaculate MF 7614 the farms JF FCT 850 trailed harvester, bought brand-new in 1995 and now in its 29th season on the farm copes very well with the heavy first cut crop even climbing up the hill (and of course going back down again!) with a full Marshall 8.5t trailer in tow.
Swapping over the trailers is a MF 6465 as seen in the previous mowing video (also working in the distance is a neighbouring farms NH topping the pastures) while buckraking in the indoor clamp with the pedal to the metal is the farms MF 390 and Twose buckrake with it’s Duncan cab removed due to the limited access under the beams when the shed is full.
It’s always a pleasure to visit this farm and watch the family making their silage and video and take photos of this not so common practice as it was 30 years ago taking place. Filmed in Cumbria 25th June 2024.
I’m taking a short break from posting videos over the next couple of weeks (although there might be a couple of shorts) to spend some time with my family and enjoy a well needed rest from my 60 hour a week job. However I haven’t gone away and hopefully by the time I’m back the cereal harvest and fell farmers silage crop will be underway (still very wet in that area) so hopefully I can capture some late summer footage of the fieldwork going on. Hope to see you all soon. Cheers , David.
If you enjoy my videos of farm machinery at work in Cumbria (and Southern Scotland), please consider subscribing. Likes and taking the time to comment (preferably positive ones) are always welcomed and I will try to reply as soon as possible although if I’m at work or out filming there might be a delay. Cheers, David.

And a very good evening to you Fraser. Ah yes trailed forager with the trailer behind just as it was done by many including yourself before side loading became the more common option. Yes the JF chopper still going like a good’un, any repairs that’s needed are seen to and a good dollop of grease when put away and when it’s brought out again so a well maintained machine with many more years service in it. As for the 390, again almost 30 years old, well over five figures on the clock but running as well as ever. (Don’t know if you noticed but apart from the direction change that left foot never rested and rode that clutch once!) You’ve hit the nail on the head there, yes there’s been lots of improvements in many areas but in handling any machine it all comes down to the operator knowing how to handle his machine, knowing it’s limitations and to observe them and again your correct when that trailer starts to slide it’s going to keep going in a straight line till or until it reaches the bottom of the hill standing or worse still lying on its side so the operator here knows to change at the end of the rows. Yes a couple of weeks of family time Fraser, me and my partner although certainly not over the hill yet are approaching our advancing years and while we have a young outlook on life we know that once into your 60s those latter years creep up very quickly so we try to make the most of the time we have left. I know you must miss your wife every day Fraser, I would be lost without someone to talk to after I get home from a long day at work so I try not to think of when the inevitable will happen. Hopefully my videos and our chats help to pass the time, I’m pleased we’ve built up this friendship and hope to continue for a good while yet. Take care my friend and we’ll speak soon. Cheers, David.

Good to hear you’ve still got a couple of the Masseys, did you trade the 690 in for something newer? Ah nice one Des, a good history of your forage harvesting outfits over the years. Yes things kept getting bigger and faster but when you think about it when you had your 690 and NH 719 all you needed back then was 80hp and you managed 12-15 acres a day which wasn’t bad going back then! Yes I’m tired of the grey clouds too, it’s trying to get out but very muggy round Carlisle! Cheers Dave

Good evening David and I just love this operation of the chopper hauling its own collection trailers (The way we done it). I remember seeing this fleet last year and its good to see that JF chopper is still going strong, as well as that sweet sounding MF 390. I was thinking whilst watching the video, that I am of the vintage when they started the introduction of roll bars, enforcing safety cabs and a little later on, having brakes on trailers, yet we still managed all these jobs of chopping, hauling and buck raking, without any of these modern safety aids. Here we still see these same activities still being done due to the use of more mature equipment without these same aids but by using the biggest safety aid of all, "Common Sense". When you have a crew that know what they are doing, and understand their equipment plus the ground condition limitations, then it can still be safe, because lets face it, when a full tractor and trailer starts sliding down a grass field, having more brakes on the trailer make no difference. So glad to hear you are taking some time with the family David, as its one of my regrets, that I did not do more of that before I lost my wife. Enjoy your break, and thanks for the video. Cheers, Fraser.

@@davidwinthrop7077 Morning David and thanks for your prompt, and I have just found your original reply. Yeah the lad on the 390 sure could operate that tractor smoothly and is why its probably lasted so long plus they are all obviously very well maintained. Thank you very much David for your kind thoughts and words which I really do appreciate along with our friendship. It was in July of the year she passed that we went with our caravan for the last time, and it was in your neck of the woods, the Lake District we spent our last holidays, so that "Cumbrian" connection with yourself seems very apt. Nicely caught David! I remember a few years back seeing some similar Marshall’s under a self propelled machine on a small dairy farm, amazing it’s taken me until now to realise that they must have had a trailed machine before hand with the way the extra sides are placed at the rear. Hi Ben. Now your memory serves you well about a fleet write up in Classic Tractor as I wrote the article myself. However that was a different fleet and that 390 (a very late one with a TB turbo) did have a front linkage but I also did a feature on this fleet in this video although they’ve added the 7614 since. I’m sure the other farmer still has the 390 with front linkage though and I keep thinking I should revisit him in the future. Cheers Ben, pleased you mentioned that and put the thought into my head.
