I shifted into 4low for the first time and there was a slight grinding noise. Sitting in my driveway, in neutral, foot on the brake. What did I do wrong?
25 in 4Lo? Might take that a little slower. I've heard that the dial-a-gear models can do 62 in 4Hi. That's crazy if true. I'd be scared to break the car. In 2010 I broke the 4WD on an '05 Trailblazer by going too fast in 4WD. Since then I'm very conservative about using the gears. I use them less and keep lower speed when doing so.

Its fine to go to H4 on tarmac/asphalt steep twisting road if you need more 4wd traction. The limited 4runners are on full time 4wd. I would just be more cautious going to 4Lo.

2WD for regular street driving. 4WD for dirt and gravel up to 50mph. 4Lo for dirt and gravel, he says to 25mph, but people tend to use 4Lo to crawl at low speeds, like 10mph.
When towing a sedan on a trailer with a Toyota 4Runner, you should typically keep the vehicle in Drive (D). The automatic transmission will adjust the gear based on the load and terrain. However, if you're going uphill, downhill, or on rough terrain, consider manually shifting to a lower gear (like 4th or even 3rd) to maintain better control and reduce the strain on your transmission.

4 High can be shifted into when driving at low speeds. In order to shift into 4 Low, however, you will first need to put the vehicle into neutral. ... No matter what vehicle you drive, never shift to 4WD when traveling at high speeds or when on dry, level roads.
No max speed, however driving too fast for conditions necessary for 4Hi is a recipe for disaster. If you are going over 55, you are too fast for 4Hi conditions.
@@dp1643 i don't see why anyone would be wanting to go any faster then 40-50 mph on a snowy surface especially a highway. Even with 4x4 that sounds a little careless.
In the owners manuel you can drive over 50km , it's only shifting in and out of 4H there is a restriction in the speed usually I shift I and out below 40km
The grinding noise sometimes happens more often when its cold or if you haven't shifted into 4lo in awhile. The 4runner manual actually suggests going into 4x4 once a month for 10miles or so to keep things lubricated.

How do you switch from H4 back to H2 in a 2009 4runner? Mine switches itself into H4 sometimes and I cannon find instructions with steps to switch it back to H2.
0:40 Nope. Unless you have a 4runner Limited, you shouldn't drive it in 4H on regular pavements at that speed. It's a part time 4WD and doesn't have the center diff. Driving 4H on regular pavements will put tons of stress on drive line and cause premature failure. The only time you need it is when u go off-roading, get up stiff hills, stuck in slopes, rock, snow. These conditions require more traction and also allow tires to slip to prevent stress on drive lines.
Doesn't he say when going from regular road to fire road - which means low traction surface - at around :50 you can shift from 2WD to 4 Hi? So he knows not to engage 4WD on pavement. Or am I misinterpreting what he's saying?

My experience with Toyota 4x4, truck need to go back to neutral, then 4 hi, drive it 100 feet then back to 2 hi. My 2 cents. I’ve had 4, 4x4 Toyotas

Yes you can. I do that when the situation calls for it. You just can’t go to 4LO without stopping and being in neutral

2wheel drive
4wheel drive
