Improvising CALM PIANO Music for 20 Minutes

- It's been a while... Recently I've been struggling to commit to a topic to make a video about, and struggling to stick to a musical idea... So I had an idea: improvise for 20 minutes STRAIGHT, no cuts, no edits, just whatever comes to mind, and post the results.
I may turn this into a series if it goes down well. For now, just sit back, relax and join me for a stream of consciousness.

Your content is perfect for the livestreaming format. This performance is so beautiful an honestly great music for focusing on work. Would love to see a Livestream of you composing a piece as well.
This is such an amazing video. As someone who is writing mainly piano music and currently stuck in playing always the same kind of patterns in my left hand it is a treat to watch your kind of thinking and get a fresh perspective on some left hand accompaniment patterns. Thank you Dan!
Wow. Over and above the theory and technique is that rare gift to just let it flow form the mind, channel from the heavens. You have that gift in spades. Lucky bugger!
You really know your chords. Nice improv.
Sounds like ballet music. Very pretty.
That was a beautiful experience actually Dan, watching and listening to that. You are a really good, natural performer - I mean doing it in one take, minor blemishes and all which don't detract from the overall thing in any way. Thanks for the overhead keyboard viewpoint too, really nice for piano players to see and kind of feel what you are up too - only some of which I could fully comprehend but that's the great thing - If only we had such a record of some historic notables playing but now finally the tech is here to capture it. It's a unique thing you did there. I've never been so close to someone else's 'process' in that way. It's intimate and greatly suited to music that gives one space and time to think and breath as it happens. Thank you.
Was playing along on guitar and ended up writing a song. Thanks Dan!
Amazing video, Dan. Ever since I started watching your channel your playing has been a constant inspiration for me. It's been a while since I've been able to get into a calming headspace while playing the piano. Thank you for reminding me that playing the piano is one of the best things in the world.
Beautiful calm and peaceful piano music. Absolutely relaxing. Thank you so much!❤️❤️❤️
You're an inspiration, Dan. Thanks for posting this. Lovely playing and beautiful music.
I think this is one of the best videos I've seen this year, thank you
Lovely stuff. Particularly soothing as I'm under the weather after a foray to the big smoke!
Big smoke... sounds like a 4/20 convention 😅
I will watch a whole playlist of these :)
Beautiful playing.
Lovely improvisation
I LOVE this!
Great Video and great Improvisation Dan! :)
Since in the video discription that u struggled to find a video idea you wanted to commit to, I wanted to suggest one^^
Could you make a video in where you explain how to improvise like this. I'm especially interested in the harmonies, especially into the more romantic sounding harmonies. I would love to implement such chord changes into my music but don't know where to start to...
So a video about that would be great.
Also can you recommend any other source where to learn this style of piano music :)?
would love this too!
I second that!
Yes!
I third that idea!!!
Beautiful!
Very beautiful, Dan!
Thanks
I love this piano a lot. Wish there were more dynamics layers. Great playing Dan.
Amazing stuff! :D
Incredible!
Wonderful! 🙏
More of it!😀
Very Debussy! Well done!
Yes
I hear a piano concerto in there. I hope you recorded it in your DAW.
Really loved that Dan, very inspiring. Is F# an easy key for string players?
What is the progression (s) you are playing?
Hey man, great Improvisation! I play piano for 15 years now and I can play difficult classical pieces but I have no idea about improvising... Any advise for someone who is not a total beginner and want to start with improvising?
Thanks! I'd say just follow your ears. Some of my earliest experiences playing piano were listening to a song and trying to follow the melody line while it's playing. It's such a treasured memory for me, not knowing what intervals or notes were, just fumbling through - I was about 4 yrs old. Within about a year I had perfect pitch. You could also try just improvising little countermelodies to pieces you know and see what harmony you enjoy - where you like placing dissonance in your chords etc. I could talk about this stuff for hours
Please make another video and talk about this stuff for hours 😊!
How did you pick F# as the key to improv in? It's not a key I'm comfortable with or one I would choose but after watching, I think I'll challenge myself. Beautiful!
I’m a big believer that F# sounds different to F and different to G. Gb, Ab and Db are some of my favourite keys, I think because they’re that little bit deeper and warmer than their natural counterparts. How I decided to start in F#, I’m not sure 😅
