Although in rare occasions i like music with lyrics which i dont understand, thus rendering those sounds as a sound of an instrument. When there are just "sounds", i can add whatever meaning i feel like to it (based on my mood, my needs etc..) when lyrics come in, it makes the whole experience narrower, limiting my imagination by telling me a story. Umm, Metallica's Orion came out in the 80s. Instrumental has been around forever. Let me know if you want a list as half of my library is instrumental metal. Many metal bands also offer instrumental versions of their albums like Kadinja, Periphery and Erra. Also, as a guitarist since 12 and approaching 37...I love me some good rhythms.... but that isn't stopping me from loving leads (shred or otherwise). Why can't all guitar riffs just be based on quality and not if "rhythm" or "lead"?
There's plenty of instrumental metal out there. Like, dude holy shit there's a ton. And there are plenty of amazing shredders too that don't just wank. I'm pretty much the opposite, the older I get the more I gravitate towards technical and progressive shit.

I teach a middle school creative writing class and they request this for writing time pretty much daily. It keeps them quiet focused and in the zone. Magical.
