    You make it accessible, a bit experimental, not dogmatic. Thank you for taking the time to share and inspire! Really appreciate it!

    I've watched several tuto videos about colors harmony/mixing because when I paint my colors are terrible. But, it's the first time I REALLY understand why. I think because your explanations are simple and clear (even if my english understanding is not good). Very excited to go back painting with my new knowledge. Thank you very much.

    I was plien air painting last summer with a very good painter. The scene was lots of greens and browns, but he had quite a bit of color he was mixing and using. I talked to him about it and he said he doesn't worry about getting the actual color (hue) he pays attention to the color temperature. "Get your color temperature right and they rest just works" he told me. Re-invorces what you are saying here about color temperature (and harmony). His painting was beautiful and he sold it that afternoon for something like $900 I believe for this 11 x 14 painting (it might have been a bit bigger like 9 x 12). It had great harmony.
    Thanks for the video.

    Great video. Just watching you mix this harmony is appealing to the eye. I've painted with different styles and find the limited palette to always yield great paintings. However, there are times when adding a high chroma color has its uses like the Carder method or controlled light and palette methods . It's just that limited palettes takes a big hassle out of making sure everything fits correctly. We pay extra to get those high chroma colors when in fact, we paint mostly greyed colors. Love your videos. Keep it up.

    Dude you make everything sound so much easier than everyone else like I've actually learned a lot just watching your vids, I've also decided I'd prefer to use only reds, yellows, and blues on my palette. You should make a video on how to make all the popular colors with just the primaries, like the different greens, umbers, siennas, Naples yellow etc. etc. I really like the idea of just using the primaries but I'd want to know how to make every other color you typically buy in the tube. Thanks.

    • @SchaeferArt
      @SchaeferArt  9 років тому +1

      +000bullets Thanks for the comment. That's a good idea for a video. I may do something similar. It all depends on which primaries you are using and which shades of red, yellow and blue. You may not be able to make every other color but you can make what you need for the most part.

    • @000bullets

      +SchaeferArt oh I was also wondering, what type of blue, yellow, and red is the best to start out with? Thanks

    • @SchaeferArt
      @SchaeferArt  9 років тому +2

      000bullets I personally use Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Yellow Light or Medium, and Cadmium Red Medium. Some folks use Alizarin Crimson as their red, and some also use phthalo blue as their blue - so it all depends on personal preference and what kind of mixture you want to make.

    do you not really need to clean the brush often or at all? (in the interest of every colour being in the mix for harmony?) do you clean the brush throughout or do you just occasionally wipe it a bit, and how do you clean the brush at the end? great video thanks

    • @SchaeferArt
      @SchaeferArt  9 років тому +8

      Tom l Good question. I use a rag [or paper towel] and just wipe off my brush[es] throughout the painting. And I try to use different brushes for dark colors and light colors. After a painting session, I just clean with soap and water.

    I made a color diary that I keep track of which colors I use to mix another. I also made a chart yesterday of what primary colors look like mixed with other ones. For example, I did one page of my lightest yellow, and another of cadmium yellow, and one of yellow ochre, etc. And on each page I made swatches of how each yellow looks mixed with my different blues, and with my different reds. all three colors together. Also black and gray made with these colors. Also It will be nice to refer back to.

    Yes ultramarine blue because of the red bias will only create a dull green,for a bright green a blue such as phthalo blue with a green bias will make a lively green,with a cool yellow thinks for the demo.

    Thanks for another very useful video..I have a question about value, when you throw a dark color (like blue or burnt umber) into a mixture that contains white (like the red pile), you don't just change the color but the value as well, right? Because I've heard you get two different results when you mix colors (or mixtures) which differ in value. Thanks a lot!

    Nice perception thank you... what are your thought on compressed color values in a painting this is something I have working on and I wish I could understand it better yet I think grey is the key from what you share here…thank you for sharing your knowledge it is very helpful

    • @SchaeferArt
      @SchaeferArt  9 років тому

      JIm Foley Grey is a big help for sure for reserving your colors [compressing the color values, etc.]. Most colors in reality are grey-ish, just different hues. So it's just determining what color grey it is - to say it quite simply.

    Great lesson especially for the grays. I'm just starting so please excuse the ignorance. I always thought that gray was just mixture of black and white so I've wasted lots of paint. I bought a paint brush set but they are all soft hairs. Seems like you use brushes that are much stiffer like straw. Please explain the difference and its uses.
