I remember this from the late 1970's, and travelling home from London down the A40. So great to hear it again, I did find it some years ago, but it was only available by invitation. The sequels were just as good!
I just Love to read the comments of those dear people who have already listened to the story.
They always give us an indication of what is to come. Thank you, one and all .❤️
What a wonderful voice John Bennett had!♥️
This has been one of my favorite plays!! Thoroughly enjoyed this. Well acted and well put together.😎👍👍
These plays are a lifeline for people of a certain age 👍 Thank you so much .
I don't know the age that you have in mind, but born in 1968, I really enjoy discovering the fairly consistent high quality of "old time" radio plays! I believe that people of any age who appreciate good writing, history, and hearing many renowned TV and movie actors also enjoy OTR. Old souls and English Lit majors, maybe? (I'm both) Cheers!
@@leslieortenzi8875 Well , in my humble experience , people under the age of 40....ish , rarely have the concentration to listen to a radio play ( or watch a tv program come to that ) over 60 minutes in length . This is probably due to the instant gratification to be found on a mobile phone , or any other internet device , and would explain why a tv series that might have run into 30 or 40 epidodes in the 60's , barely makes double figures today . Lack of concentration , and too easily bored .
Exceptions to be found in any rule of course . Glad you like these .
I think David, that you are speaking in a curmudgeonly way. Of course, you may be an internet troll trying to drum up reaction but let's assume that you have this extremely poor opinion of young people. I will counter. For their leisure, young people today binge watch all kinds of very complex serial shows and play group video games which require strategizing and collaboration. It all seems to require more concentration than your little radio shows or old time TV series. I encourage you to take another look, rethink your opinion of young people. For myself, I will continue to enjoy these radio shows without disparaging whole generations of the population.
@@heathercarr1879 Heather i read your reply and i can find nothing in any of it to alter my initial statement .
Curmudgeonly .....a very interesting choice of word . I am happy to dispel any suggestion that the term applies to me , bad temper is luckily not one of my vices . I do however think that you are possibly displaying early symptoms of gerascophobia . This can be reversed with education .
Your use of troll did however raise a smile , the last time i read that was in a childs book , you remember those i am sure . I am completely confident that the term does not apply to me , i do not set out to upset people .
My first post was simply thanking a kind person for sharing a radio play .
These plays ARE a lifeline for people of a certain age .
Have a lovely weekend .
@@heathercarr1879 Oh well said, couldn't have put it better. I know lots of young people (under 30) who astonish me with their knowledge & adventurous spirits. Always a mistake to talk of a whole group of people as if they all wore the same hat.
WONDERFUL ENTERTAINMENT IT IS REALLY NICE TO HAVE REAL PLAYS WITH OUT FOUL 4 LETTER WORDS I AM VERY GRATEFUL FOR MANY HOURS OF REALLY GOOD PLAYS.
REGARDS FREDERICK
I wish this particular case was a series every week! Great actors all around. 5 stars!🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Some of the best writers ever , these dramas are proof of that.
Wonderful. Great acting. I enjoyed it very much!. Thank you!
Thank you.
Well done.
Thank you so much❤
I LOVE LISTENING TO THESE
Wonderful!
The best one ever. Thank you.
Listening in August 2021
Very good, and thanks for uploading. I think there was an obvious flaw to what Michael Haywood did at the end, regarding his treatment of the British Secret Service. Don't want to say any more and make a spoiler out of it, but if you listen to it all, and remember how he got into the situation, you will probably see what I mean.
The Irish aunt and the cheerful KGB Colonel come over as rather clichéd & artificial characters now (remember Colonel Stok in the Len Deighton books / films? ) but I supposed seemed original back in the 1960s/70s.
I wonder if anyone ever fell in love with and married a beautiful speaking voice, several here …
Yes, I'm sure many people, just like me, have adored a voice without ever seeing it's owner. Charlotte Green for example.
Nice play m, got me through a dismal afternoon. Thank you for posting.
Thank you.
Synopsis: A businessman, Michael Haywood, whose firm is on the verge of bankruptcy, has planned a trip to a trade fair in Germany. Before leaving a long lost military friend calls and asks to meet Haywood in Germany. The friend is a character in some sort of mysterious danger. When Haywood arrives in Germany, the characters, mysteries, and dangers multiply.
Once again thank you Tottie.
You're very welcome!
I really appreciate the radio synopsis. Thanks
Thanks for your trouble in laying out the basics here. ;-)
@@RSEFX It's my pleasure. 😊
Beautiful pronunciation.
Great 70s cold war spy drama well worth a listen, better than watching tv these plays.
What a fun story!
Listening again in June 2021- did I hear correctly one of the characters saying ‘CaberNET’ how language awareness has changed!
It was a German wine - kabinett.
First and best of the Haywood spy trilogy by William Keenan. This is top calibre, exciting and fun.
You say they're more???
Would love to listen read the other's
Title's of the books please if known???
Thank you 😊
@@gavdalad8942 Hi! They're good, aren't they? #2 was The Night of Caesar's Knives tx 14 Il 1976 and #3 was The Vienna Connection tx 29 VII 1978.
Keenan also did some great police procedurals, especially with his Inspector Rourke character. I have the two sequels but don't want to spoil this channel, which has been excellent t.o follow. (Unless the channel creator agreed.)
@@jatrius Yes they're great 👍, I searched his name on UA-cam quickly and didn't see anything else, but that was just at glance. Personally I wouldn't mind them being uploaded but the choice isn't mine, will be keeping an eye out in future for them. This play really pulls you in and takes you there,Who would ever think production's were being made as good as this in the 70s, and still being appreciated to this very day , Enjoyed every minute of it
This reminds me of the movie currently in the theaters called The Courier.
I will have to look for that!
A gripping story, well told. I’d have enjoyed the ending more if superhero Heywood had suffered from ED on his wedding night.
LOL 😆
When did these shows air?
Fine entertainement !
What an amazing story of spionase...love som
What does spionase mean, and also som, what is that? Yes, it is a good story.
@@sandrapicton8961 that miswriting i am going to write love so not love som..sorry
Spionase means undercover agents.yes the story is good.
Brilliant 👏 thanks for sharing 👍
Very entertaining, great voices and ominous 'spy' music. Ta! I look forward to listening to the sequel.
Sequel?? There's a sequel?
@@hanschristophercharles6981 Yep. Search for William Keenan. The night of Caesar's knives.
@@amaninamsterdam9016 Found it!! I'm listening to it now. What great plays they are. Thanks for the info!!
Fun, straight-out good ol' fashioned spy story with enjoyable characters (with real personalities).
A message for the channel owners: you URGENTLY need our help and yet you fail to provide a few descriptive sentences about the play. In stead, other listeners selflessly provide a thorough synopsis😏.
Red rum was a race horse, and I can't spell shergar, but it doesn't matter because I'm typing in the wrong box! So why I'm saying this won't make any sense to anyone here!
Or if it does, then I'm even more confused than I started out! And THAT'S saying something!
Right 👍
"I was just noticing that behind your severe face is a very attractive woman, Miss Wickham."
While today bosses are too afraid to say, Lovely day innit?
As long its not Simon Tempel!
Didn't like it. Contrived and ridiculous plot.
This was almost amateurish. The production had very poor sound effects and awful dialog as well. This was Grade C acting to top it off.
.
I just cannot understand why people would want to write a synopsis,,this isn't the place for wannabe critics or reviewer,,
Thank you for listening and for your comments. We invite the Chesterton Radio community to share their comments and reviews about the shows we share. There is not a lot of information available about some of these shows so some listeners have been kind enough to share story summaries and synopsis. If you'd like to jot down your comments or thoughts about these shows we'd be glad to read them as well
@@ChestertonRadioI wonder why people have to criticise everything nowadays. I am so pleased that there is a synopsis of the play and what people think. It does give some idea of the play. Thank you for uploading all of these plays and I so enjoy being taken back to a past when life was slightly different to now.
They are being helpful and making a contribution to a conversation, being part of an online community. Not sure what your objection is. Just don’t read them if it causes you distress.
fhills76, a synopsis is not a critique or a review, wannabe or otherwise🤨✌️
I usually only have a title to go on. A synopsis is helpful. Stops me missing something I might otherwise overlook. Similarly it prevents me investing time in something that isn’t really my cup of tea. I’d like to thank synopsis writers for steering me in the right direction (and not wrecking the plot)!
Generally I enjoy these old shows, but as a woman this one was totally offensive. It makes me sad that people thought this was acceptable back in the day.
Then don't listen. How can you bear to even think of our less than perfect past? Move on if you're that sensitive.
I'm only half way through and not yet offended... let's see what happens. (I do place this in the past, a very different time from today). Let's see how it goes 😌
@@mairzydoats3176 and Lammsy Divey
Oh, JS... UR correct! What was it?..."most women want to be dominated by a man" Or something to that effect. AND, "that is why women prefer to work for men". Yes, this kind of writing keeps these lies alive. Outside of this and with a giant grain of salt, I am enjoying this silly intrigue. I hope there will be superior radio shows for my future selections.
sexist
How did people got away with writing such rubbish and than turned into play?
Ah sure, why not! Some humour, sarcasm and what on earth is going on is a good mixture...
Unlike all the wonderful plays you have written.....🤨
You should have read the synopsis!
@@Cheepchipsable Well, poster didn't offer a clue as to what they didn't like about it. Not a single descriptive adjective.
