JB!! You got the HF kneeling pad!!!! LOL! And good call on not disassembling the inner drive system. My cousin had his 2016 model Ariens 30" Platinum fall off the back of his flatbed plow truck in 2019. It hit the pavement tires-first and split the right side drive clutch and sprocket. Same! I keep some of those ziplock freezer bags with the little white label that’s easier to write on for parts. Absolutely crucial. Magnetic parts trays are good too.
I think it’d be awesome to keep that Ariens handlebar placard as-is and just “patina clearcoat” it since you mentioned it’s so rare to have an original one in that good of shape. It has just the right amount of wear for that type of finish and might be an awesome show off/conversation piece for the final product. Looks like it’d be an easy removal and install to be completely redone after the fact too if you decide the look doesn’t fit down the road.

@@The_Mace RIGHT?!?!? The previous owners set that baby down to the ground! I immediately raised it up. Ready to go with a new one! Breaker bars are my friends… after mace! 😉
Oh…the vein impeller. Throws snow like a beast. They should have stuck with that. My dad bough an ariens in the mid-late 70s. Four vein impeller and did it ever chuck it. Bring back the four vein impeller!
When taking my radial arm saw apart I just put all the nuts and bolts in 3 magnetic trays, but, I know where each one goes by either it's size, or the amount. Example, the bolts that hold the post to the base are the 4 biggest bolts, the bolts that hold the table clamps on all have Philips heads and there are 8 of them-4 long and 4 short, etc. along with 16 nuts, 8 of those acting as jamb nuts. I'm not worried about keeping up with the flat washers and lock washers because they're all being replaced anyhow. The screws are all easy as well. 4 cap screws, 2 screws to hold the side measure on and 4 motor screws...or bolts....in any event you couldn't possibly mistake them for anything else as they're about 6 inches long, lol.
JB Nice video, I just grabbed a SB824, looks like 40 to 50 years old. going to go through it and with your videos gives me confidence that it can be done. I'd leave that Arien's panel just the way it is... I think it'll look cool with original patina against the freshly painted machine! I'd also leave the wheel center caps as is.
If Ariens is gonna go into making high end mowers that have the same level of quality as their snowblowers, there is a list of things they’re going to need to do. First they’re going to have to build these things in their Wisconsin plant just like their high end stuff. Next, they’re going to have to cut ties with Briggs and Stratton and put better engines on the equipment. They can put Kawasakis on them, but personally I think it would be smarter to have LCT build them a new commercial grade vertical shaft engine. My reason behind this is that they could use it as a selling point since LCTs are already on the snowblowers and people have come to like them. Finally they’re going to have to adopt the best mowing technology they can find, like Honda’s quadracut blade system and Toro’s grass recycling and striping. This all won’t be easy to obtain, but if Ariens wants to stand out in the mowing industry this is what must be done.
Hey JB nice job on tackling the restoration on this old Ariens. Have you ever considered finding a good running 8 or 10 horsepower Tecumseh engine on marketplace and painting it white to match the original engine color scheme? It would look awesome!
