Baldy Mesa is a great place to ride! If I may suggest, you guys need to hit those hills way faster than you are and maybe a gear lower. You need more rpm's. The widow maker, I hit it in 3rd gear pinned on a 2020 WR450. Momentum is your friend out there. Have fun!!

My 650r & my 450x with a worn tires makes it easy in 3rd. It's been around 10yrs since I climb it last with my other DRZ400, so I'm sure It's do able. I'll try it again, maybe next week, with a new tire. I started the climb in 3rd but with a stock DRZ, wants to go lower quick.

Looks like a fun and enjoyable trip. If you teach your kids to get off their butts and stand on the pegs, they will enjoy it even more! It is easier to absorb the bumps and balance the bike with your weight on the pegs, that's what they are for. Also using lower gear for hill climb is preferable. You might run it close to redline at the foot but you will have better torque multiplication once you get higher and slow down, allowing you to climb higher and hopefully reaching the peak.
Keep at it, learn new skills, don't be afraid to drop the bike and enjoy it while you're doing it. It only gets better.
