  • Thoughts about my 1999 Yamaha XJR1300, in sumary its a pretty decent road bike if you can live with owning an older machine. I'm taking it to a track day very soon and I don't think it will be quite as home on the track as it is on the road. Video on that coming next!

The XJR is a good looking muscle bike, I had an XJ a few years older, and while it didn't really inspire, it made for a reliable enough bike. Funnily enough that had 6 gears despite having half the capacity.

I've got to say reliability is a bikes most redeeming characteristic. I can forgive a bike for being a bit dull at times if it just works! I had a triumph that I spent more time working on than I did riding, no exaggeration!

the reason i changed my long term sprint st (owned from new for 12years) was the knee discomfort. I loved the bike but couldn’t ride it for hours without pain. There is an advantage being able to switch off your headlights, when approaching horses, the flickering can scare them. Shoed horses on tarmac have very little grip and when skittish can result in them ending up on their arse and separate from the rider......
I think the next vid i record will be a bit of a ‘my bike history’.
Stainless steel changes colour with heat and it is irreversible, personally i like it, the corrosion or road crap can be removed using harpic bleach apparently but for exhaust bits i’m not that fussy. Today should have been my RBLR1000 ride so watching vlogs is helping me get my bike fix! what is your filming set up? and did you have any problems at first? i had major audio probs.

Hi Seb, That Triumph sprint made me question whether I had knee problems but it turns out it was just the bike! The exhausts on my XJR are chrome not stainless so you can polish out the blueing if you have enough patience, which it turns out I don't. 😅 Also personally I wouldn't be smearing bleach or harpic on stainless exhausts as its likely to cause corrosion, they do polish up pretty easily with autosol. Yeah, bike history is always interesting because the bikes you ride and what you use them for can make you change your perception of what is a good bike. All bikes are good, but some only show their best side when they are put to their intende use. I think major audio problems is the norm for starting out, my audio isnt perfect. I'd like a little less wind noise and a little more engine noise in the mix. If you want to see my setup I posted it here. motovlog.com/threads/for-starting-out.19102/page-2#post-166168 I use a Gitup 2 and a cheap lav mic that I glued inside my helmet. And I use Sugru to chin mount the camera.

@@krustyboots2586 I'll take a look at the motovlog link. I have looked at quite a few set-up related posts on there, pretty helpful most of them.
The harpic thing seems very popular of late on Facebook with before and after pics. Plenty of rinsing off is probably the key.
My mic picks up the bike noise much better than I expected. The wind deflector does a good job for reducing wind noise but it really affects the vent performance on my helmet ( shoei neotec II ). Misting up has been a real pain for me when it's been cooler or wet, I've muttered about it in a few vids!

I'm not using a dead cat on my microphone I just have 2 muffs on it and it sits by my cheek. My agv is excellent at not misting up but I also tend to ride with the viser cracked open a little at anything below 40mph

I just couldn't get the blueing off the chrome exhaust headers!

I remember when I first started biking, it was regularly mentioned in magazines about going out specifically to blue the exhaust, some even did it on the aftermarket end can which must've been a noisy affair with supersport 600s revving to 15000!

@@krustyboots2586 I chose an sv650s over and r6 for my first big bike because I prefer usable grunt to ragging an engine. Your bike must be great for easy progress without waking everyone up and dancing up and down the 'box all the time.
The valve clearance thingy is my next big service and I've heard a huge variety in costs from triumph dealers. Some quite scary!

The Xjr1300 is great, it's got plenty of torque down low but the motor is very happy to rev too. Its not as powerful as modern bikes but it's super simple and easy to live with. I recently did a valve shim adjustment on it it cost me around £35 for new shims and a tool to remove them without removing the camshaft. Oh and a few hours of my time :)
