    In today’s climate of increasing layoffs, higher competition for entry-level jobs, and the rise of AI, many are questioning whether the huge time investment is really worth it. Plus, with NVIDIA’s CEO claiming that “no one will need to program in 10 years,” the fear that developers could soon be obsolete is real.
    In this video, I’ll share my honest take on whether learning to code is still a smart move. I’ll also present data to help you make an informed decision about whether this is the career switch for you.

    The key is to not study to be an employee. Study to be a founder and all these problems won’t exist. I don’t want to be hired. Don’t care about what employers think about me. I won’t work for them not because they disregard me, but because I’m not looking for a job. I will compete with them instead. 😊

      Not everyone wants to own a business or be a founder and everything all this implies, like hiring managing, scaling, delegating, so people just want to write code. I prefer having ideas given to me, I love to build things for people and companies. I rather focus more on what I want to do (writing code and building things) and less on what I don't

    Nothing can replace having a good grasp and a well trained ability to keep and stop/continue a lot of threads of thoughts. Sure you can cut some corners using AI but the main task will still be on you, at least within the near future. Over time, the corners that can be cut are going to get bigger and bigger though, so knowing and using good working AI tools are mandatory. I'm anticipating philosophies, languages, and frameworks, bulk solutions that come bundled with or have integrated dedicated AI to improve and accelerate development.

    coding might still exist in future but not everyone can code like what we have today. You have got to understand that when machine can code itself, there is no need to code it such a way that human can understand. It only needs to code to another machine to read. That way it is way more efficient and effective than human coder(which then translate to machine readable format).

      I agree. But it is also true that things happen or don't happen for reasons that are not so logical. A company that has to maintain an old application, as happens in the banking sector. A less logical reason is that someone knows and does not want to lose their job and continues to make their company hire the same consulting firm... In short, we don't know what will happen, but I totally agree with what you say. It is an alternative path that may exist and I don't understand why they don't talk about it when they talk about impact.

    I don’t think software engineers are going to go extinct due to AI, however I do believe that there is going to be a shift in the common activities and skills software engineers apply to their jobs. There will likely be a generational disconnect between old school engineers and those that get started sometime within the next 5 years forward. I think there’s going to be a greater demand for creative engineering from people that are able to take this tech development over here and this one over here and a bit of this over here and put them together to create new and unexpected things.

    As someone in the tech industry, I believe AI won't fully replace software developers, but it will significantly reduce the demand. Tools now exist that can, with a few prompts and in minutes, create apps that juniors would take weeks to build. Given the high competition, it's becoming less worthwhile to invest years learning to code from scratch. Personally, it took me three years to land my first job, and most others don't make it.

    They may be repetitive (actually, they definitely are), but unit tests are one of the things that should be least suited for automation. By "should" I mean that people who understand their value would never automate them, because they are the proof the code truly works and that the people writing it truly understand what they're making. Even delegating unit tests to a junior is a bad idea, because then you're not refocusing constantly on what you're trying to achieve. Having a machine generate them turns them into meaningless word salad, no better than lorem ipsum.
    But you know, many people just see tests as a nuisance. It's one reason so much software is garbage.

    One thing I MUST say is if you are interested in coding and tech, you need to start now! If you don't spend every waking hour to passionately learn coding for the love of the "game" of coding and figuring things out, then it's probably not for you. I learned to code 25 years ago. No formal schooling and no money. I wanted to build websites, so I learned along the way from books and whatever code examples I could find online at the time. Still coding and learning new stuff faster that ever now with the help of LLMs. If you want to do any schooling. Do a bootcamp and get a cert, but don't waste your time with getting a degree. Stuff changes so fast that by the time you graduate, what you learned will be outdated and you're graduating as a debt slave. A shortcut I'm surprised more people don't take is starting your own IT consulting business. Learn as you go like I did. Learn to use the chat bots to learn faster. "AI" is not going to replace human ingenuity or creativity. Get hustlin' and get used to hard work. Nothing is easy.

    Prominent figures in tech and computer science have popularized the notion of not learning to code, but it’s true that people will need to learn for at least a decade. Frontier AI models like Gemini 2.0, o1, and Claude 3.5 Sonnet can already code better than entry-level programmers. So, beginners can learn basic coding but won’t catch up to AI models. Only senior programmers are safe. I started learning less than a year ago, and AI models have already mastered what I’m learning, which is improving exponentially. However, I have a coding companion, and others will too, accelerating my learning. Future programmers will be a combination of AI and human intelligence, an AI augmentation with humans in the loop.

    The problem is not generative artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT. They are only level 1 AI. The real problem is the next levels, starting with AI agents. It is clear that someone will always be needed to review the code, but it will be 1 or maybe 2 people, which will make the supply of software engineer positions drop even more. This will not only affect Jr. engineers but also Sr. engineers. Companies will be able to create very complex products with virtually no human intervention. Let's remember that current agents are already capable of revising themselves and you can join several people doing “simple” tasks to generate more complex solutions. And I insist, agents are level 2, only level 2 of AI.

And find me a software company that actually buys new computers to replace its old Pentium Pros. I haven't worked for one yet that isn't still using hand-me-down hardware from the CEO's junk stack in his garage. AI? What's that? So, yeah.... AI may become a threat once high-tech infrastructure catches up (say, maybe in the next 20 years?), but right now, most of the stuff used by the average technology outfit isn't even on the Internet, except maybe in old UseNet archives somewhere... I'm not terribly worried. It's a good tool to use for reminding me about tedious things I don't use often, but it's not the huge threat it's being made out to be, IMO.

    Do you think that software engineers roles are at more risk than DevOps/SREs?

    • @eman0828
      @eman0828 Місяць тому +1

      If there are no Developers exist, then what would you need a DevOps Engineer for? They wouldn't have any pipelines to build to deploy software into production. Stop worrying about misinformation and learn to upskill and keep moving. Every role in tech evolves. Developers is nothing going any where any time soon. Computers can't function without code in order to tell the computer what to do.

      Great answer! No role in tech is stagnant, and will evolve constantly, unless you are an expert in maintaining legacy systems built on COBOL

    I see all these UA-cam videos made. telling ppl not to code cause it’s to hard or dying out etc. while they coding and making or made hundreds of thousands of dollars off of coding. Stop listening to these ppl. u don’t choose not to do something, cause it seems too hard. or seem like it’s dying out to some ppl. over 80% of the ppl there telling this to. are working a way harder 9 to 5 then coding . and get paid minimum wage living in a expensive state. Learn to code ppl. there ain’t one downside to learning how to code. plus u can always freelance and make extra cash on the side.

    Those people who are "learning to code" - you've always been doing it wrong. One should not "learn to code" One must study mathematics, logic, Scientific Method, engineering in general, electronics, and a few more.fundamental topics. Coding will come along as a side effect.

    • @tomcoop9750
      @tomcoop9750 Місяць тому +1

      Not quite. Learning to code in one language translates well to learning other languages. You don’t have to be an expert in all those subjects to be a great developer, though it helps.

    • @vitalyl1327
      @vitalyl1327 Місяць тому

      @tomcoop9750 learning to code is very much useless without becoming an engineer. No point in knowing how to code primitive things (nothing beyond primitive is accessible for such people) if you have no idea what to code and how to design it. And in order to become an engineer you need all the above and more.
