  • Erica was a wheelchair accessible vehicle when we bought her, and her ramp had proved handy until this week, when it became an impediment to the building of the gas locker. We thus bit the bullet and took an angle grinder to her ramp.

You do know you don't have to cut the ramp it just unbolts and you can still have keep the bottom half.

Hi guys, loved the video very informative, hoping to purchase a van myself soon, after you cut of the ramp and replaced the bumber could you still use the original catches and lower the bumber and remaining piece of ramp to reveal a under floor storage section. You comments and afvice would be very much appreciated. Thanks you.

Spookily, I was only thinking earlier today that I completely failed to show the underfloor storage in the 'Camper Tour' video. Yes, we did exactly that - we kept the original catches and formed a new (more basic) release mechanism using a strut from the original release mechanism (cut down) on one side and a piece of stiff wire on the other. They cross over each other and fit so that they just protrude enough above the bumper to be able to grab them, but not so far as to foul on the trim that we inserted internally above the bumper. The space under the floor isn't big, but better to be able to make use of it than not.
I realise that the description I've given above may be difficult to visualise. Perhaps I should make a short video just to show that little feature?

Hi Gale, with everything you know now, would you reccomend buying a tepee with the wheelchair conversion or look for one that hadn't been converted? It seems to have taken a lot of work to remove the ramp, winch and fill the hole in the floor.

Now there's a question on which I could probably write a whole essay, but I'll try to be succinct! The day before we bought Erica, we tried to buy (again at auction; we were outbid) a completely unmodified Tepee (which are rare things - most seem to be either wheelchair adapted or taxis), and we would have been happy if we had secured that one. However, what the wheelchair modification does give (provided you get one with the cut out running the whole length of the rear) is an extra 10cm of headroom, which is not inconsiderable in a small vehicle like this.
Some of the work caused by the ramp/cutout is offset by work we didn't have to do - if we'd bought an unmodified vehicle, we likely would have fitted a new floor into it (to cover over the rails for the original seats and allow for some insulation) which, with the necessary shaping, would have taken longer than levelling Erica's ramp. The ramp and winch removal did admittedly add on time and effort, but fortunately I'm not short on time, so in our case, if we were to start over again, I would happily go with another wheelchair vehicle (and would everything a lot more efficiently, based on what I've learnt over the last few weeks!).
In the ideal world, however, I think that the longer wheelbase (L2) version would have been easier to work with. The structure of the wheelchair modifications on the underside of the vehicle limits where you can cut through the floor for things like a drop-out vent and a heater, and I suspect there would have been more options (and/or greater margin for error) in the longer version.
