I was 15 when we chose this movie at the crown cinema. It scared the shit out of me, but i became a life long Fan Anthony Hopkins. He continues to blow my hair back still yet to this day.
Yeah me neither. As much as I love Jack he woulda made Corky psycho from the start and unlikeable. He worked perfect in the Shining for that but here he needed to be more nuanced and IDK if he coulda done it right. Gene was too nice to play that much of an disturbed guy, so they made the best pick for sure. Tony was perfect for it. Burgess too.
Definitely, but I don't blame him for not wanting that dummy in his house. Fats and Chucky (Child's Play) have the same affect on me. I can't have those characters in my home. Imagine either one or BOTH of those characters in your house and a Ouija board on top of it!?!? Aaahhhhh NO THANK YOU!
The 33 second TV ad from '78 that I saw when I was eight still freaks me out to this day. I've seen the full movie a couple times, which is brilliant, but that TV ad.......jesus!
Fats the puppet of my fears n nightmares scares the heck of me shakes me to my core Sir Anthony Hopkins is brillant in this I'm fraid of Fats thumbs up if you're a fan
Fats, as the film makes clear towards the end, is an extension (in Freudian terms, a manifestation) of Corky's dark and sinister self. We, as the audience, should question our fear of Fats and ask ourselves: Considering it’s only a puppet, what are we frightened of? Does “he” or it represent aspects of our own character we’d rather be left within the subconscious. An analogy would be if you lived in a house and one stormy night all the lights went out, then you heard a strange noise in the basement, your mind might very easily jump to thinking there might be somebody down there. The there is no fear greater than fear itself to paraphrase an idiom.
One of the best true acting movies I've ever scene in a theater! I was 11 years old and saw it opening night. Never forgot how great and creepy it was! "How long ya been like this kid?"
@threestoogesfan2 If they ever rebooted the Batman Franchise again Anthony Hopkins would be perfect to play The Ventriloquist and do Scarface's voice as well.
Absolutely agree!! I always thought that (even back in the 90's around Batman Forever), Anthony Hopkins should be Ventriloquist. Man, that would have been freaky!!!
What a great movie! Just watched it for the first time last week. These videos are a great bonus feature. I was wondering how the movie had made Hopkins look like a natural born ventriloquist and now I know the talent behind Fats! !In the movie, I wondered why Peg was enamored of Corky, but then her charmless husband shows up, and I think I still might have picked an unhinged but more attractive Anthony Hopkins myself 😊
As I've often said on other channels about this movie, it was absolutely brilliant, right up there with the very best. The one thing that I always couldn't quite figure out was the end and how Corky's girlfriend suddenly started behaving. The way her voice changed to Fat's voice, the maniacal laugh and grin on her face, for example, did this mean that she was insane herself? Was she being controlled by Fat's the Dummy now that Corky was dead? Or was the twist really that she was ALWAYS as insane as Corky but was just better at hiding it than he was?
That's funny Hopkins was freaked out by Fats. I don't blame him for wanting it out of the house. One Christmas , not sure how old I was but I wanted and got a Charlie McCarthy dummy. That too disturbed me I worked with it a bit then just covered it up, then put it in the closet. Did not like that feeling of a puppet just sitting there "looking at me". Yeah I know that strange unsettling feeling. Hopkins was great in this movie. He's a great actor.
My grandmother, for reasons completely unknown to me, bought me a ventriloquist dummy as a kid. It's one of my worst fears So, I stuck it behind my wardrobe
I think both those dummys are creepy. The one this guy is currently waving around in this video is about as creepy looking as they get. Did this guy purposely want his doll to be so damn creepy looking 'cause the thing looks like a psychopathic serial killer!
When Fatz says "we''re gonna be a staaaar".. I remember watching that as a kid and totally freaking out! Scared the hell outta me!
Hey you know what I think we're gonna be a staaaar

He blew my ass out
Can't picture Jack Nicholson or Gene Wilder or anyone else but Anthony Hopkins playing Corky.
Burgess Meredith was good in this movie, too.

According to IMDB, this movie was proposed to one Steven Spielberg and he wanted Robert de Niro to play Corky.
anthony hopkins was definately the best guy for the part

I've still not recovered from the Magic, Exorcist, and It's Alive commercials. Permanent PTSD here. LOL
Without a director with out a staaaar

i could have seen him as the father in the shining ..he would have been awesome
So, this is the man that is responsible for traumatizing my childhood? I'll never forgive him. Ever. lol.
thank you for this
You are a fantastic ventriloquist!!!!!
Fats was scary until you realized that Corky was insane .

Yes, but can you make him shut up for 5 minutes......?
Who
@ღαηgєl нєαятღ but which one
BEN And FATS made me almost Doo Doo my heart out as a kid..
jack nicholson turned it down cuz he didn't want to wear a hair piece? what a jerk.
Is there a knitting pattern for his jumper

Where did you watch it? I would like to get a copy.
He did still learn to throw his voice, which is pretty impressive for a few weeks.
It is a great suspenseful and emotional movie. Glad you liked it.

That is such a weird ending.

First of all William Goldman is a genius. Him and Dan O'bannon. The great writers of hollywood.
I wanted Fats to be alive for so long, broke my heart when I read the book as a teenager and found out the truth...I still think he is evil though.
Atta boy, Schmucko!
That dummy at 1:20 looks remarkably like Andrew Lloyd Webber!!
I'll be honest the final choice of dummy for Fatz at 5:25 looks way more like Terry Wogan than Anthony Hopkins.
Fats resembles Richie Aprile from The Sopranos. Love the "Manson Lamps"
I think both those dummys are creepy. The one this guy is currently waving around in this video is about as creepy looking as they get. Did this guy purposely want his doll to be so damn creepy looking 'cause the thing looks like a psychopathic serial killer!
He looks like a murderous drag queen or pre-op
dudley moves throughout the whole thing.
Yeah I agree with
@ern
That lip lift is horrific
Classic Horror considering the Lead Role is played by a "dummy"! Very well done among dozens of forgettable chiller films of the time.
by himself.
Is that THE FATS ???
OMG so creepy :-(
4:00 Hopkins has a terrible American accent - which is rare for good British actors.
norman jewison i wonder what religion he is
