Matt, your tutorials are excellent. You explain the little details and tricks that are often overlooked or glossed over in other videos. I'm learning a lot and gaining confidence with my hand tool work. Keep them coming!!
I agree! Your work is made with precision and beautiful. You’re a young man, I can’t even imagine how amazing your work is going to become as you grow in your skills.
I started with . How to sharpen chisels, how to chisel half Laps , how to saw etc etc . I love the links . Great videos . I’m learning so much from you . Had to subscribe to your channel.
For the next 4 days over 4 weeks (night classes) we are having to build a frame for our practical lvl 1 Carpentry & Joinery exam with 6 different joints, this being one of them. We have already done the joints individually but mine come out really messy. I really hate the router plane ( almost nothing in our class is sharp). Going to sharpen my own chisels tomorrow using a new honing gauge I bought with 25, 30 and 35 degree angles (only using 25 first then 30 for the honing angle. Not using 35). I hope this will make it easier. GREAT vid mate. Gona watch your Bridle Joint vid later!
Very high quality work I am impressed and I love the way you keep saying take your time. Us amateurs often try to speed things that should not be. Well done Matt
Audio is perfect, that said i watched this on my phone, while my wife was in the shop - yes she took nearly 15 minutes... - superb video - now i must go back and watch the corner-halving vid to see how you did the marking-out.
Excellent video Matt... immaculate joint as far as I could see - something to aspire to for us amateurs. Audio was fine for me. A bit of an echo as some others have said but it didn’t distract and I’m sure it will disappear when you move all your stuff in :-). Cheers ....
Great video Matt. Impressive fit of the joint at the end. Lots of work for me to do to get mine that good. The audio levels were fine for me, but like you said it's a bit echoey at times. It was really noticeable at the start of the previous video that there's been a big change in the acoustics of the workshop.
The author does like to from scratch, ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. As another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us don’t have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we won’t be able to practise the full stack project, is still great.
I find it easier getting a wide chisel and a square bit of wood and I clamp both bits of wood in the vice with the square bit of wood following the marking out of the dovetail and then just slowly keep taking bits of wood using the spare piece of wood as a guide until both bits of wood are flush with eachother, always ends up with a lovely finish and no fluffy edges from using a saw either because you're only using a chisel
I have watched you for quite some time when I realized I wasn’t subscribed. I’m so sorry! Love your content and hearing your accent you might be from Europe (at least used to be)
Hi 👋 I’m planning on making my first “proper” workbench very soon and wondering if this joint would be suitable for a workbench base…legs and stretchers ? I only took up the hobby last summer but now I feel ready for the challenge…reason for considering this option is just an alternative to standard Biden mortise and tenons…🤓👍
Great work, I see what you mean about the lighting you mentioned in a previous video. The audio levels are really good maybe a little loud when using the mallet Maybe some sound proofing foam may be of use
A beautiful joint Matt. You didn’t trim down the sides of the tail but left the saw cuts as they were. Is that how it’s usually done? Could there be a small unevenness there?
From a previous video I watched , been searching for a "jesus " pen ,,, fgs , thought it was a nice new item I didn't have yet , . keep up the great videos !!!!
Loving these videos, I don't know if anyone asked this of you yet, but why did you not first clean up the dovetail with a chisel before tracing it onto the other piece? Wouldn't doing so give you a tighter fit when everything is all cut? Thanks!
I just got a tenon saw off Amazon. If Veritas are mid-range, then mine is a low mid-range, I guess. It had good reviews, with one persistent complaint: It was filed too aggressively and the users had to re-file the teeth to be able to make the initial cuts. I, on the other hand, try to follow Matt's advice in his saw-using video. My only complaint is that I got a low mid-range saw with too many teeth/inch, so it cuts slow. But unlike Japanese-style saws, it doesn't make my hand cramp because I don't need to white-knuckle the handle. I'd like one like that L-N he's using, but I doubt one of my kidneys is worth much on the open market. I don't mean to be a hype man, but if you've trouble with sawing and haven't seen that video, then watch it.
Great video as always! 👍 Need some advice: 🙏 I have these words 🤨. (behave today finger ski upon boy assault summer exhaust beauty stereo over). I don't know what they are. What should I do with them? 🤷♀️
My Dad used to drive me mad by always saying, without fail at any and every opportunity, "You are the ruler, that is a rule." Thought he was so funny. (Brilliant talented cabinet maker mind.)
Thanks for sharing such valuable information! Could you help me with something unrelated: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). How should I go about transferring them to Binance?
nice work but I thin after sawing the tail you have to clean the cut with the chisel. At the end, I think, the union do not have to be so tight because there has to be space for the glue. Nice day.
Great vid Matt !! Bit old and creeky myself..., so my only suggestion might be that, for newer wood workers or ol geezers like myself, is cut back on the espresso a little you talk a little fast .But over all, three big thumbs up nice job on the editing as well my brother !!
Thanks for sharing such valuable information! Could you help me with something unrelated: My OKX wallet holds some USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (behave today finger ski upon boy assault summer exhaust beauty stereo over). How can I transfer them to Binance?
Sorry for the late reply mate, I made it myself! When I say I’m dangerous at turning it’s in reference to making that knife, it was so ropey! Here is an article on how to make it: www.woodworkersinstitute.com/furniture-cabinetmaking/projects/hand-tools/knives/make-a-dovetail-knife/
I've been really enjoying these tutorial videos! Keep them coming please. An online school/course would be great, I would definitely pay to attend. Do you have a patreon page?
Double thumbs up! May i make a suggestion? From an audience point of view, try and let the wine mature for longer! I am quite happy to watch and listen more slowly, I am not sure how many others feel about this though ?
The Norwegian Woodworker That'll be enough Tom Foolery outta you! Eh! Don't encourage the feeding of the Heretics... Damned false idols are everywhere these days. (↑ Sarcasm, should that not be clear)
Hi Matt, I am enjoying your tutorials but please slow everything down? It feels like I’ve been in a whirlwind! It would be beneficial to the newbies to woodworking and us old geezers! Other than that excellent! God bless you! Andy.
Matt Estlea - Furniture hi Matt, it was to do with your presentation speed! I teach carpentry myself mainly to newbies and they cannot cope with fast demonstrations, I know most of your viewers are probably younger intermediates or beginners, I am more than capable of making that joint and wanted to see how you made it so perfect and maybe learn something new along the way, which I did! even so I found it difficult to keep up, I’m getting on a bit and and find it hard to catch everything young folk say these days because you speak so fast, everything seems to be done at breakneck speed, my mantra to students is the slower you go! The quicker you get, With more accuracy! Fortunately for you and others on UA-cam, us viewers can watch over and over and so pick things up! Please don’t take this as negative feedback! I hope it is taken as constructive for that is the manner in which it is sent! I have viewed your pieces on the web site Wow! I am sure you will inspire many many people young and old alike including me, keep up the good work, God bless you, Andrew.
well for those that have an ear infection the audio is a bit low ahahaha. its probably fine tho, good video to me the intro always seems a bit scratchy like its way louder and i have to turn it down and then back up.
You are on to something here, my friend! Step 1) Obtain case of Jesus pens. Step 2) ???? Step 3) PROFIT! Why do the moneymakers only seem obvious after someone else has done them?

I'm building a loft bed with desk and book case for my son. Binging your channel has been invaluable.
I love seeing that the art of true craftsmanship is still around and not only known by us oldies.

OMG that table is amazing!
Beautiful joint! Gotta try this one.
That was great. Thanks Matt.
Incredible fit on that joint. You've obviously put in the practice on cutting and chiseling.
Just a bit! Cheers Thomas.

Your videos are awesome!
i like your style-nicequality thanks
In these videos I think it would be a great idea to give examples on how these joints are used.
They are used to join pieces of wood together.
Excellent videos mate looking forward to more
Cheers Greg!
Great video, nice and clear, well done.
Mike Shipman heyyyy that was my cousin’s name! He was a good guy. He’s dead now. Thanks for the memories.
So precise...awesome.
Excellent one Matt. Audio levels are fine, don't really notice the echo.
The Jamie Oliver of woodworking. LOL Great stuff buddy

Killer! "You really nailed it", audio was good enough once you got rolling.

Please make a video on making mitre joint
Interesting video, what would happen if you didn't measure from faceside each time would it look incorrect
Audio was great. Very cool joinery where would you use this type of joint.

Bahut achha sir
Hi Matt,
I might have missed it but can you explain when to choose this kind of joint over another one?
Thanks!
Matt, Could you use this joint on green oak of would there be issues with shrinkage when the oak drys out?
Hey matt, what marking knife do you use?
Sorry for the late reply mate, I made it myself! When I say I’m dangerous at turning it’s in reference to making that knife, it was so ropey! Here is an article on how to make it: www.woodworkersinstitute.com/furniture-cabinetmaking/projects/hand-tools/knives/make-a-dovetail-knife/
Ok cheers mate
Your markings make a 'broken heart' Matt :)
Audio OK but soft. Lighting when using the carcase saw dark, but still uber useful tutorial mate!
Top Notch👍🏻👍🏻👌🏻
so a halfing joint...is that the same as a half lap joint?
I've been really enjoying these tutorial videos! Keep them coming please. An online school/course would be great, I would definitely pay to attend. Do you have a patreon page?

Cheers George! Do you mean as in slow down my method of presenting or quantity of upload? Always looking to improve so the more I know the better!
Perhaps vary the speed of content delivery.........the method. Dont loose the humour, its good. Again double thumbs up.
Is there a specific reason you avoid knifewall method to make a crosscut? Or is it lack of confidence? Excellent videos.
WHICH wood is that darker piece? Rosewood?
Thanks buddy : ) (hug)
Maybe slow down a bit. You could deliver in an Aussie accent and it would be perfect lol. Good video and well explained. Big fan. Well done.
Paul Sellers knife wall for sawing would help this project maybe.
Subscribed.
Nice.
Thanks!
I checked Lee Valley tools for Jesus pens, however they don't carry any. :)

Nice
What is the dovetail ratio?
Dunno! Just eyeballed it! Probably about 1:6 or 1:7. I’ll be doing a video on that topic in the next few days!
Thanks sir
What is dovetail groove
Some of the transitions in the video are very Adam West Batman-esque, they just need the sound effect. :)
came here for my exams...stayed here for the asmr and the exams

Today I learned that today is not a good day for me to try this joint. I did, however, learn a number of ways to screw up.
What language is he using?
What is dovetail joint?
well for those that have an ear infection the audio is a bit low ahahaha. its probably fine tho, good video to me the intro always seems a bit scratchy like its way louder and i have to turn it down and then back up.
The Saint Judas Tadeo Pen is Epic!!!!
Looks cool. But it’s a lot of effort just to avoid screws...
Sound attenuation (knocking down the noise) is actually not too hard to do.
wow!!!
What is this language called.......?
That’s a beautiful joint Sir..
You sound too posh to be a woodworker!! Ha ha..
Bro good information but u always speak so fast. Its like u have a flight to catch.
Oh my god, it's really do only hand? I'm do it's on Kapex:)
You are on to something here, my friend! Step 1) Obtain case of Jesus pens. Step 2) ???? Step 3) PROFIT!
Why do the moneymakers only seem obvious after someone else has done them?
Stupid question. Isn't this a dovetail lap, and not a halving joint?
