- The second term of Donald Trump as U.S. president is set to bring significant changes to the U.S. immigration policy, impacting many undocumented Indians. Reportedly, around 18,000 Indians in the U.S. face uncertainty.
In the first India-U.S. bilateral talks held after Trump’s inauguration, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized India’s stance against illegal immigration stating that India supports the repatriation of its citizens who are undocumented in that country. “We have always taken the view that if there are any of our citizens who are not here 9in the U.S.) legally, if we are sure that they are our citizens, we have always been, you know, open to legitimate return to India,” he said. He also talked about India’s positive position on legal mobility of people across countries, emphasising that the Indian government believes in a global workplace.
For Indians seeking to immigrate legally, President Trump’s policies may tighten visa pathways significantly. The Trump administration’s proposed changes include stricter requirements for work visas and potential cuts to programs like Optional Practical Training.
S. Jaishankar also stated that India is working with the Trump administration for the deportation of Indians in the U.S. who are either undocumented, or have overstayed their visas.

I am an Australian of Indian origin. I bekieve that, all illegally Indians living anywhere in the world MUST be deported. There are real good path ways to immigrate to any country. Take the right path. Why use crooked method? Shame on all the Indians who are illegally living in countries, claiming refugee status. You make me ashamed to be of Indian origin.
