Garvin's dept store in Lancaster PA did the same. As late as 1960's. Remote office cashier. But they used pneumatic tubes to carry the little cylindar.

We had Quinn’s hardware in town that had the same thing, and when I was a young boy, I thought it was magnificent.

Now 2 dollar items are behind locked glass at Wal Mart
Not just wild west. We used them in Salford (UK) when I was a child to manage takings over many departments
